A different war...

As we all pause today to honor the fallen in the wars we can understand the sacrifices made because of increased technology.
Here is an article about myspace.com profiles from our men and women in the armed forces who gave it all in Iraq. The soldiers leave behind their most personal thoughts and talk about the hardships they are going through as the headed to the battlefront. Although they didn't return their myspace profiles continue to exist as a final testament to their connections to family, friends, and country.

Here is one example of a soldier who was killed in the war. Read his blog entries and comments from his family and friends. Read what he says about enlisting again.

Here is another example of a soldier killed in the war. Read through his survey and look at his biggest fear.

I think we best honor the fallen by understanding the causes and consequences of war. We must understand their sacrifice and mission to support them.

If you know somebody serving our nation in harm's way leave their name and how they are connected to you so we can all pray for them.

If you know a soldier that needs anything let us know how we can help.

If you attended an event today or have other thoughts to share let us know how you honored our heroes today.

Every year I try and put an American flag on my World War 2 Father's grave but the Rabi stops me and says my flag is not Kosher because it is not made of natural fibers and ink. Just another day in the life...
Does anyone know where I can buy a Kosher American flag made of hemp or something with natural ink?

Who cries for the children... What day do we have for the children left behind? They don't have guns they just get scared as the bombs fall. Why don't the Republicans think Iraqi children have a right to life?
I think about veterans everyday you people are rookies. They just made this holiday to make you feel better about doing nothing. Republicans don't even care about the live veterans stop fooling yourselves into believing they care about the ones that died.

Warbusters-
I think this thread and this day should be those of reflection on the lives of all soldiers AND their families who have sacrificed for our country. You can debate all you want about whether particular strategies, actions and politics of war are right or just, and yes we must make certain that if we ask for their sacrifices, there is no other way to achieve our goals. But maybe right here, right now, it is more appropriate to remember the soldiers with respect, love and gratitude.
I took my family (husband and three sons) to Normandy, France in December 2005 to see St. Mere Iglese, Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, Point d'Hoc, the Bocage and the American Cemetary. It was almost too much to bear reading all those names of young people from all over the U.S. who died in the first days of the invasion at Normandy. We also went to the Peace Museum in Caen, and I cried during a documentary film they showed there about the Normandy invasion and the days that followed.
Today, I remembered my walk through the American Cemetary with tears in my eyes, and proudly hung out my flag.

Don't worry tomorrow it will be all over...

The children of Iraq that died had names. Where do we honor them. Where can I walk and shed tears for them? What flag do I proudly hang out for them? Leslie.

Remember Leslie out of all those graves you saw none of them fought for George W. Bush or ideas or his crew. Not a single one.

You are right we don't have time traveling soldiers.

Why can't you take one day off and focus on the American warriors?

Maybe you could even read the articles linked to in the story?

War takes no holidays.

I was honored to have participated/volunteered for the Rotary Club of Simi Sunset's Inaugural 5K-10K "Gator Run". Proceeds from the event will benefit the Ventura County Fallen Firefighters Memorial Fund. Thank you to the Simi Sunrise Club for allowing us (Simi Sunset)to do our run in conjunction with the Cajun Festival.

A special note of appreciation to Lynda Nickolai for organizing the event and having the vision to know it would be a success. The final numbers aren't in but it appears to have grossed almost $20,000 to help fallen firefighters. Simi Sunset honored the "Firefighter of the Year" at the event. It was great to have the firefighters come out and participate.

DOJ-
"War takes no holidays" - You are correct. But there is value in taking a day to remind our nation of the sacrifices through the years of all those who gave, and those that are still risking their lives.
I don't consider Memorial Day a celebration of war, but rather a day of reflection and gratutude for the sacrifices. Our soldiers' sense of duty to country should be respected.

I think that the soldiers still in Iraq are doing their best to make sure that the children will not be subjected to genocide and starvation if we leave without making sure there is some stability in the country. As I already said, you can debate all you want the politics of being in Iraq, but our exit should be done in a way that protects our soldiers, and protects the Iraqi children left behind.

Well said Leslie. Memorial Day exists to honor our soliers, especially those that have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. This is a day that should be kept sacred in their honor, not to be politicized by the politics of the moment. Our soldiers deserve better than that.

You two take a day off to remember. I remember everyday.
If you were to ask the dead soldiers if it is o.k. if I try and stop what got them killed on Memorial Day what do you think they would say?

Cindy Sheehan who Republicans attack remembers everyday.

You know your doing something right when you wake up and pull the curtains open on Memorial Day to find two doves having sex. See there is hope in the world.
