Education press conference
There was a press conference today to oppose the governor's proposed budget. Many local leaders ere expected to be in attendance including:
Assemblymember Pedro Nava, State Senate candidate Hannah-Beth Jackson, Congressional candidate Jill Martinez, Ventura County Superintendent of Schools Chuck Weis, Ventura Superintendent Trudy Arriaga, Ventura Board of Education President John Walker, Ventura Board of Education Vice President Mary Haffner, Ventura County Board of Education Trustee ML Peterson, VUEA President Stephen Blum, California Teachers Association Secretary Dan Vaughn and student leaders.
You can find out more about it at Marie Lakin's blog by clicking here.
Anyways, did you go? What have you heard? I will post links as stories are published about it.
UPDATE #1: No mention of non-incumbents Jill Martinez ( Democrat running for the nomination to run against Elton Gallegly) and Hannah Beth Jackson ( Democrat running against Tony Strickland for State Senate) but does anyone have video to post?
A fellow blogger, Marie Lakin, has written an updated entry about what happened at the rally. Click here to view it.

Marie, I am going to post the picture you sent me. Is there any video on youtube to put up also?
Posted by: Brian at April 20, 2008 11:43 AMI tried to answer you before, but it was apparently a casualty of the technical difficulties we have been experiencing on the blogs since Scripps decided to "upgrade" the software last week.
The entire rally was filmed by CAPS-TV and it is scheduled to air this week several times. It also aired on KEYT News. (ABC affiliate for W. County and S.B. County)
It was a great event with more than 500 attending and then we all marched down to the Government Center. Hannah-Beth marched with us! But I'm just sorry that we had to have a rally to beg for education dollars in the first place.
I visited the Ojai rally for education today. There will be a "Flunk the Budget" rally in front of McClintock's office, 223 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., in Thousand Oaks on Friday, April 25 from 4 - 5 p.m.
Of course we know he will not be there.
Posted by: Marie at April 20, 2008 7:35 PMMarie, it seems to me that McClintock is the only one who's been trying to "fix the budget" for many years now. He's the only member of the Legislature who's been trying to rein in spending and restore some sanity to the annual budget process. If they'd done what he's been proposing years ago, schools would have plenty of money today.

Please list the specifics of McClintock's work.
What has he opposed, proposed, and supported?
Posted by: Publius Venturae at April 20, 2008 10:36 PMMaybe McClintock could start by returning the $306,000 he's taken from the taxpayers in per diem expenses which were meant for legislators who live far from Sacramento. McClintock doesn't live here and as such it's rather hypocritical of him to accept the money.
Posted by: Marie at April 20, 2008 11:13 PMPublius, one thing he has consistently opposed, which is the subject of this discussion, is the State budget as proposed each year. Specifically, because it contains spending that is out of sync with revenues.
The State Legislature, dominated by Democrats, has continually adopted a State budget, year after year, that is structurally imbalanced. Until they rectify that situation, nothing will change in the future. Schools can expect to bite the big one, year after year, until their is a change in the dysfunctional group in Sacramento that has the audacity to themselves lawmakers.
Posted by: Mongo Flamo at April 20, 2008 11:35 PMGosh Mongo, you forgot to mention that Tom McClintock does not even live in this District as reported in the LA Times. McClintock also took over $300,000 in tax free per diems meant for legislators who actually live more that fifty miles from Sacramento which McClintock does not. McClintock should give all that money to local schools. He is the biggest hypocrit in Sacramento, he says "Let's cut spending" while at the same time he is shoving tax payer money in his pockets with both hands!
Posted by: Not Osborn at April 21, 2008 11:02 AMI thought you said educational leaders were in attendance. Looking at the list, I see hacks - but no leaders.
Posted by: long tall at April 21, 2008 5:23 PMYou're just trying to stir up trouble, "long tall," but I'll respond, anyway.
I think our superintendent, school board members, PTA presidents, Ventura Education Partnership board members, county superintendent, county school board member, state CTA secretary, college district board member and countless parents and volunteers qualify as education leaders.
Posted by: Marie at April 21, 2008 7:08 PMYou forgot the head hack, Marie - Hannah Beth Jackson.
Posted by: Mongo Flamo at April 21, 2008 9:40 PMMango,
Everytime I don't think you could sound anymore ignorant, you do! The only hacks are you and your buddy Osborn and your overlord Tony Strickland. How does it feel to be a hand puppet Mango?
Nah, Mongo, I'm the hack. In the traditional sense it means a writer doing lesser work, which would certainly apply to blogging. :-)
The rest of those folks are doing wonderful things. I was very happy to have them join us. All delivered very powerful speeches.
Posted by: Marie at April 22, 2008 3:21 PMMarie, you're a class act. I've always said so and I'll say it again here.
On the other hand, Not Mongo, you're a total jerk! Mike Osborn and I are certainly not hand puppets of Tony Strickland. We support him simply because he's a good Republican candidate and will serve the interests of this district far better than Hannah Beth Jackson.
You've clearly got an axe to grind with anyone who differs with your opinions, which is anyone who supports a Republican candidate. I can hear your knee jerking from here.
