Former Sup. Charles Weis in the news

( Here is a video of Timm Herdt in case he tries to sneak into your events.)

I haven't written much about Charles Weis in the past because it doesn't seem to draw people in unlike other actions by the county board of education. Here are some recent stories about him.

1. He was offered a home loan as part of his compensation package from his new employer.

I heard about this but I didn't write about it because he is no longer a county elected official. For the same reason I haven't been posting about Tom McClintock's victory in the Republican Primary for congress in Northern California. It is a close call. They both have connections here but it seems they are losing news value for local voters.

2. Timm Herdt wrote a blog entry pointing out that Weis was the only county wide elected Democrat. With Democrats having a registration edge in Ventura County what office will they make a serious attempt at first?

3. The process of replacing him is ongoing. Has anyone heard something new about it? Even though it is a nonpartisan position I bet they somehow end up with a Republican. That's what happens when two board members are also members of the Ventura County Republican Central Committee. The new person might be highly qualified but the pool seems like it will only be open to Republicans. Do you agree?

On a side note here is a partisan break down of most offices in Ventura County. I am sure there are a few updates to it but it is close to accurate.

Actually, Charles Weis STILL IS a ventura County elected official, and will soon be a Santa Clara County appointed official.....

...and in a time when average people are losing their homes.. it is an abomination, that santa clara county school officials are giving their soon-to-be new school chief Charles Weis an interest free million dollar home loan....and I guess directly from school funds, because where else would santa clara school officials get a million dollars to give away, if it weren't from tax funds??

The loan breaks down as follows, according to the Mecury News:

$500,000 interest free
$500,000 at 3%

At best, this is a "sweetheart" home loan deal to a government offcial, which certainly isn't available to any average citizen.....

Let's hope it isn't an "interest only" loan...

But only Charles Weis can give us the full details of his new home loan, courtesy of Santa Clara County taxpayers....

Anyway, we can cetainly say Santa Clara taxpyers are a generous lot, paying their new school chief $285,000 and throwing in a million dollar home loan at an equivalnet of 1.5% if you average it out.....

Thanks for clarifying the current status of Charles Weis when I said he was no longer a Ventura official. I meant, like Tom McClintock, that he was on his way out.

This board has been corrupted by its connections to the Ventura County Republican Central Committee.

We have a school board member asking cigarette companies for money and someone wants to talk about the next job of someone leaving?

How about we focus on the den of vipers that rule on issues for students in one moment and collect cash from a tobacco company the next?

Any school board member asking a tobacco company for cash should consider resigning. Why are they there if it is not to help kids? The health insurance? Do they get health insurance? That would be really ironic if someone working with a tobacco company to further their political agenda is getting health insurance for a job that is supposed to help kids.

Resign!

Anyone think Weis will be pulling telling us much more once his job here for us officially ends?

(Quote from above writer)
"We have a school board member asking cigarette companies for money and someone wants to talk about the next job of someone leaving?"

Tobacco is still a legal product....and it keeps a heck of a lot of people working growing the stuff....and distributing it.....

And local governments throughout california have happily taken tobacco settlement money and spent it.....

No, I am talking about the special home loan deal given to the current ventura county school superintendent from his "next" employer. santa clara county school district....a deal which is unavailable to regular people

A half million at no interest, and another half million at 3%

And I am writing it here in the Blog, wondering why it never made it to the front page of the Star...where i have no doubt it would create a wave of outrage....

As a note in today's news, Senator Conrad from north dakota is "donating" $10,000 to charity after it was discovered countrywide waived one point on a commercial loan....

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aG8uEA1VgMVs&refer=worldwide

..and our local school superintendnet has had all interest waived on $500,000 and about another 3 points waived on a second $500,000

It is also legal to give him a package that entices him to take the job.

The difference is that it doesn't directly give people cancer.

If it would cause outrage where is the outrage here except for you? You are upset because of what political faction you belong to which is obvious when both don't offend you.

I said it would cause an outrage if it were on the FRONT page of the Star....and while it may be legal...it is an outrage to give an interest free loan(or close to it)to a public official....apparently from OUR tax money, since santa clara county officials are offering up the million bucks....

I think the $285,000 salary, free car, free gas...and unlimited benefits are enticements enough for anyone??

Jeez, this is just plain incredible. But, it figures. Leave it to the Democrats to rush to the defense of one of their own - feeding off the public trough like the big, fat hog he is.

But, when Tony Strickland takes "private" campaign contributions, it's the crime of the century. Bunch of friggin' hypocrites, just like the letter in today's Star about Jackson said.

Remember when Tom McClintock was taking a per diem for living it a second home when it turned out to be his first and only home?

That offended me. He took advantage of the system.

Again, you are only offended because he is a Democrat. Somehow you won't equally condemn Tom McClintock and Tony Strickland.

Those VCRCC meetings must be nice. Free snacks? All for turning away from ever being critical of your own party?

You guys are famous for pointing out McClintock's per diem issue, but conveniently fail to mention Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad's sweetheart deal with Countrywide for a vacation home be bought in Delaware.

And what about former presidential candidate and Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd's preferential treatment for mortgages he secured through Countrywide?

Both of these senators are Democrats, by the way.

I'm sure that Democratic Senators Conrad and Dodd are being pilloried in their home states of North Dakota and Connecticut.

Ventura County tends to have an OIMBY complex, and I think that's why McClintock and his "per diem issue" gets talked about a lot here. It's germane.

It is true. All of them were wrong to do what they did including Tom McClintock. But I normally don't follow Chris Dodd around and what he does. I have never voted for or against him.

The reason we point out McClintock without mentioning the others is that McClintock is from here* or at least on paper he is legally a resident of this area.

I am glad that Mongo is willing to admit Tom McClintock is a hypocrite who billed the taxpayers in an unethical manner.

I agree with you on that issue!

Don't forget the VC Board of Education is paying 2 lobby firms $10K per month EACH. Strickland gets political contributions from these firms.
So far at least $240K on lobbyists whose only plan [which didn't happen] was to get an Indiana Congressman to earmark a federal bill, to build an $8Million building at Grace Evangelical College in Indiana sooooooo VC could send our 'at-risk' kids for summer training at this Christian college.

Do you know the price of homes in Santa Clara County????
How much larger and diverse the SC County school population is compared to VC???

Could Dr. Weis housing loan be money from tech companies in Silicon Valley who want first class workers in the future???

Will you be at the protest Kate? It is time we draw attention to all the strange lobbyists contracts, cigarette money, and other problems in our local politics from the out of control VCRCC.

Yes, and I think we should all attend Hannah-Beth Jackson's next fund-raising event and demand to know the truth about her financial contributors - the rich noveau in Santa Barbara & Montecito, the public employee unions (overpaid prison guards, etc.), the trial lawyers' association, and, oh yes, the tobacco industry.

Re: Do you know the price of homes in Santa Clara County???? (above)

Huh...so public employee salaries should be based on home prices......

...then maybe taxes should be based on ability to pay them....

What about the no interest and low interest loans.....who lends out their money at "zero" interest?

Check Weis tried very hard to work with the VCRCC -and in fact was in bed with them on charter schools. But then, when enough information came out that the VCRCC-endorsed/elected members of the board were anti public school nut-cases, Weis had to get out while he still had a chance to salvage his reputation.

Weis, in playing ball with the VCRCC and the Stricklands (it was "Tony's Team" that got financial support to win seats on the board) helped create this monster. Instead he should have spoken up for the children in this county.

Weis chose politics over what he knew was best for the kids.

If the teachers' unions and the Republican Party didn't support him he must have either done a really bad job or an amazing job with what he had in front of him.

I don't see much evidence he messed things up tha much.

Oh, so it's the Strickland's fault that Chucky screwed up in Ventura County too, huh?

Poor baby. I'm sure his $285K/year, no-interest loan on a house, free car, and free gas will help wash his miseries away.

Do you think the county office is in a mess or do you think it is run fine?

If it is in a mess who do you blame?

Chucky. Who else?

Charles Weis's contract with santa clara county....

Here it is....deed to the million dollar home shall be held by santa clara county, not a bank...if weis stays on the job until age 65, he gets free health care to age 75......read the whole contract yourself...see how a public employee becomes a millionaire

http://www.bayareanewsgroup.com/multimedia/mn/news/superintendent_contract_041608.pdf

...from the bay area news group

Everyone in ventura County would like to read the details of ventura school superintendents interest free million dollar home loan from the taxpayers of santa clara county, weis' new employer......but the Star only publishes "soft" news...not wanting to uspet the good-old-boy system in the county

I put this on my blog for you.

I don't think it is a conspiracy. The fact is he is no longer going to work here.

I have some funny McClintock news but as he isn't going to represent us I have held back on it.

Anything new?

Anything new?....just the same old taxes over and over to support 300,000 teachers in califonria ...who are AL EXEMPT FROM SOCIAL SECURITY, they pay zero social security taxes....and now we have our taxes going to buy school superintendents interest free million dollar homes.....and the Star won't put the million dollar home loan story in its print edition...because it would lose all its access local the local bean counters who "hand" them 'news" stories to print

Andy,

Teachers don't pay into social security because they don't get it.

They pay into Calpers.

If a teacher works in the private sector for years and then transfers to public education they lose that social security money. For some it is a small amount and for others it is much larger.

Did you ever call the Star? I bet they figured since he moved away it isn't much of a news story.

Call the Star and pitch the story. Tell us what they said.

You are right...300,000 california teachers DON'T pay any social security...like the rest of us are FORCED to....they pocket the social security taxes they should be paying

They are in the $170 billion calstrs(state teachers retirement), not the $249 billion calpers(state employees retirement)

Seems like Weis spent his tenure as ventura county school superintendent lining up his new $285,000 job and million dollar interest free home loan from santa clara county taxpayers....

Tell, me..who ever heard of an interst free million dollar home loan?? Is that nromal??
