Take Down Those Old Signs: June Primary Edition 2.0

( These signs are in a private yard in East Simi Valley and were up as of July 14th.)

As a public service after an election I post pictures of signs up even though the polls closed weeks ago. In the past it has provided a little bit of comic relief and encouraged people to pick up their signs.

If you see your campaign's sign listed here you can give permission for others to pick it up if it is in a public location. If it is in a supporter's yard give them a call and tell them the election is over.

If you see a sign that remains up, take a picture and send it to me. Include the date and approximate location.

The judges race is over. There is no run off. Bennett won the race. Time to take down the sign. As far as the Rep. Gallegly sign goes he is on the ballot in November so that makes more sense.

Any signs sticking around too long in your neighborhood? Please send them in for me to post.

This sign looks like it's on private property. What's the problem again?

I'm surprised you haven't got a picture of my Calvin Coolidge for President sign in my front yard. It's been up since we bought the place and we didn't have the heart to take poor old Silent Cal down. ;)

Scott,

I am not trying to enforce the sign code. If someone is really trying to push their favorite candidate after an election I guess I am helping to push their cause.

But I do like the Calvin Coolidge joke.

I like the two that you're showing, Brian, but, seriously, these guys need to be sure their signs are taken down in a timely manner after the election. I believe the Election Code gives them 30 days to remove them after the election date (June 3rd), which means these guys are about 2 weeks over the limit. They should be fined by the city they're in if they're in a public right-of-way.

Signs are prohibited in the public right of way in Simi Valley.

Ok.you got me....
If a political sign is on private property it can stay there FOREVER! If however, it is in the public right of way, it can be removed immediately by code enforcement.

Barbra,

I guess I don't understand the new sign rules. I thought they banned signs in the public right of way altogether. I also thought it restricted the window for private property.

What are the new rules?

But regardless it is private property. I posted it because the campaign is over for the position as judge as of last month.

If this person's property represents the public right of way, let us know.

Otherwise, I'm pretty sure Barbra is correct on this one with regards to private property.

Scott,

Unless I am reading the city policy wrong private property signs are regulated.

The city's website says under noncommercial signs:

"2. Allowed in all zones for up to 120 days."

The city banned signs in the public right away and restricts the placement of signs on private property according to their website.

But all of this misses the point. I don't care if they have a sign for a candidate for office in their yard. But Bennett isn't running any longer. The election is over.

There are plenty of people that would put their sign in that lawn space that are running.

Brian:

I'd have to go review the ordinance again because that doesn't sound like a correct interpretation. I haven't read or heard of any instances where city enforcement has walked onto private property to remove signs. I thought it was pretty much reserved to regulating the public space.

The title of your article is "Take Down Those Signs", so I'm presuming if this house doesn't take their signs down, you think the city should go up on this property and remove them or are you saying the city should require this owner have only signs that are relevant to an upcoming election?

Or are you saying when you post a picture of someone's house with a sign in their yard after an election you expect them to take it down?

I think I am missing your point. What is it?

Scott,

I expect that the campaigns contact their supporters and take care of it.

The election for judge is over. There is no run off. It makes less sense then your Calvin Collidge sign. The owner has freedom of speech if he is so proud of the new judge to keep it up for years for all I care legally.

The city code has a time window in it. It regulates signs out of the right of way and on private property to a window of time. That is a reason you don't see signs up all the time on empty fields ( which are private property) like the corner of Madera and Los Angeles Avenue or in front of shopping centers.

By the way, your Calvin Coolidge sign might exceed the total square footage allowed by the city. That sign is big. Have you checked to see if it is the largest of its type?
