VP list gets shorter

The rumors have floated around for weeks but John Edwards has now admitted to having an affair.

I think this post from Dailykos.com sums up my feelings quickly.

I will update this as more of the story unfolds.

Let's keep in our thoughts the lives damaged by his behavior.

I guess there really are "Two America's" as Edwards says. One with your cancer stricken wife, and another sleeping with your videographer.

Did Edwards' statement "I didn't love her" sound Clintonian in it's "I didn't inhale", "I didn't have sexual relations" way?

This is old news, it happened back in 2006.

Those who expect perfection in their politicians are doomed to be disappointed. Do you think Obama is some choir boy? Guess again.

They're all human beings.

Why no thread about McCain having an affair and dumping his wife, who waited for him when he was a POW, for a younger, richer dolly? Because that's none of our business either.

Yep, pretty soon he'll be down to Hillary...

...by the time the election comes around, everyone is going to be sick of obama...i am now

Hey Laura, nice attempt to side-step an embarrassing issue for the democrats. Contrary to what you say, it is not old news from 2006. The affair began in 2006, but the story didn't break until October 2007. The major networks and print news didn't even pick up the story for the first time until this week. That’s hardly old news.

Then again, should we really be surprised when a trial lawyer turns out to be a scumbag? Perhaps not. My favorite part of the Edwards interview/confession was when he qualified his indiscretion by stating that his wife's terminal cancer was in remission when the relationship began. I guess it makes him and OK guy for at least waiting until his wife was done with her chemo treatments before he started screwing around. Har har.

Like Nixon, the real story here is not the crime but the cover-up. Politicians having extramarital affairs is almost expected. Hey, if Mrs. Edwards is willing to forgive and forget then why should the rest of us care? But what we should care about is the hush money that was made to keep the story under wraps.

Of course Edwards denies directing anyone to make payments to his mistress to keep her quiet, while at the same time acknowledging that payments may have been made by supporters and other associates without his knowledge. That doesn't even pass the laugh test. It has already come out that Edwards campaign finance chairmen has in fact been making payments to his mistress in the amount of $15,000 a month. She has also been provided free housing in a multi-million dollar home. The same is also true of another campaign staffer, Andrew Young, who curiously has claimed paternity for the love child in question.

It also doesn't answer how Edwards hired his mistress and managed to put her on the payroll for a job paying $114,000. This is important since the money she earned came from campaign contributions. Not surprisingly, she had no real qualifications for the job that she was given.

But maybe the real story here is why the MSM didn't cover it during Edwards' presidential run, even after the Enquirer broke the story. It is hard to imagine a republican candidate for president given a free pass by the press on a story like that. In this case the National Enquirer did a better job of investigative journalism than the NY Times, ABC, NBC and CBS. I guess that speaks for itself. Yet even when the story was put into their lap they still chose to ignore it rather than sully the reputation of a liberal politician.

Meanwhile, Edwards traveled the country as the self-proclaimed champion of the little guy, fighting for the poor and disadvantaged. Never mind that he made his millions suing doctors and hospitals, or that he gets $500 haircuts and bills them to his campaign.

Newt Gingrich messed around when his first wife was battling cancer, too. He discussed divorce terms with her when she was recovering from surgery. Then he married the woman he cheated on his first wife with and cheated on her, too.

But this doesn't mean I'm giving Edwards a pass. No way. I admire Elizabeth Edwards. What a courageous woman.

I don't think private lives should be politicized.

Like I said, it's not the crime but the coverup. I'm not interested in digging into the private lives of politicians. What makes the Edwards case different is his apparent use of campaign money to hire his girlfriend, and the the possible subsequent use of campaign money to pay her off when she got knocked up. The public deserve a straight answer on those questions. Edwards seems to be hoping that his mea culpa on the affair will work as a smoke screen to move attention away from the money trail. And his announcement on a Friday, the same day of the Olympic opening ceremonies, was a clearly orchestrated attempt to have the story get buried deep in the back pages. What a guy.

Lost in all this drama is a little girl who should have a right to know the name of her father, which was conveniently omitted from her birth certificate.

Any of you Edwards supporters want a refund of your campaign contributions?

Bubba, Bubba, Bubba - why so serious?

Why so worked up over John Edwards? He's not even running for anything.

It may be news to you, but the whispers and rumors have been around for a long time now. As far as the campaign funds...maybe the "relationship" started after she was hired to work for the campaign. After all, workplace affairs are so unheard of, right? If you object to her production company being paid by campaign funds, what say you about Elton Gallegly having his wife (and some say his mistress) on his campaign payroll. And let's not even get started on the Strickland's slush fund - money being transferred back and forth between Tony and Audra, Boy Friday Joel Angeles, Darin Henry, etc for years.

Edwards turned out to be human. Whooo hooo! Makes him a little more like the rest of us.

Since you like to portray yourself as an old school kind of guy, I'm a little surprised you're not blaming the "mistress". Maybe Edwards is a poor hapless victim of a set-up by a determined temptress, taking advantage of him in a weak moment by plying him with Boonesfarm Strawberry Hill and playing a favorite 45 from his youth, while whispering the lyrics in his ear...goooo all the way...

Oh I forgot, liberals have no problems with ethics issues and misuse of campaign funds so long as the offender is a democrat. But if the allegation is against a republican mere rumor and innuendo will suffice. Even hard evidence of misconduct against a fellow democrat only proves that they were "human". But if the accused were a republican that person would be characterized as a monster.

To LW

You need to continue to rail against Mike Dunn,
CVUSD School Board, and support your 2 loser candidates, Beaubion and Didio.

You and the CV Dems are out of your league here
as you normally support "sub" humans!!

Bubba Kidd,

How did you multiply one person's reactions into liberals? I clearly have a problem with it. It is odd that the noncandidate has drawn so much attention.

I think there are two issues with the Edwards fiasco with a third background issue.

1. He lied to the public (ala Bill)
2. His wife is dying of cancer.
3. Mainstream media gave him a pass whereas National Enq. didn't.

LW made a good point with her observations on our local electeds paying wives, family members (Heather Stuve is Audra Strickland's sister), etc.

Mike Dunn is an embarassment and now his wife is running (along with 10 other people). 11 people running for a couple of slots.

Make that 12 or 13 have filed.

To KT-

What do you know about the CVUSD? You don't even live in the district.

Dunn may be an embarassment to you but he is a hero to the parents at Meadows!! Bring on the Charters!

Vote out the 2 dinosaurs-Beaubion and Didio!!

I know plenty about the CVUSD and the wackos that support Michael Dunn both within and outside the area - starting with Paul Finman in Idaho.

If you are serious about a charter, then talk to C.A.P.E. here in Camarillo. They are a newly chartered school and last I checked, nobody from Meadows has contacted them.

To KT-

You must be a supporter of the 2 "losers" (B & D).

Why are you so worried about Dunn-a minority Board member) and Finman, who doesn't even live here.

So anyone that is against the "gang of 4" is a "whacko"? Based upon what? Concern about overcrowding, out-dated facilities, mediocre Math,
out-dated curriculum?

Since you know "plenty" about the CVUSD, what is your position on these issues?

Why does Meadows need to contact CAPE? The county or State will now be granting their charter as it was voted down by the CVUSD fools. More schools here will now become charters making CVUSD irrelevant!!

Bring on even more Charters!!

Considering the fact that Katie often backs losers in local electtions (Michael Tenenbaum & Roberto Orellano are recent examples), I wouldn't place too much credence in her support or opposition to the BOE candidates.

Mike Dunn has a great deal of support in the community and, I predict, will be reelected. Same with Chris Valenzano.

Katie will sour grapes this thing all day, but them are the facts.

Don't have revisionist memory. I support having choice in elections. I still support Roberto Orellana - I think there is a credibility problem when the guy (Jeff Bennett) is supposed to be investigating the Stricklands for financial misdoings is not only endorsed by them but he contributes to Tony Strickland's Senate Campaign.

I don't support people that have incredibly poor judgement. No "Mighty Whitey" judges, and no creationalist school board trustees.

These are the facts.

Has Green Dot been contacted?

Katie - you are the only Republican who makes any sense. Dunn is an idiot - I've seen him in action and I get his stupid e-mails. I hope Chris Valenzano loses his seat and Kunicki is next.

Them are the facts alright. If Katie doesn't support a winner, then Katie is the loser. Now that is some really smart logic. Yep, voting is that simple. "Katie's Judgment Questionable", you are one certifiable idiot!

Keep the pressure on Katie. They are runnin' scared.

Keep the pressure on somewhere else you're being off topic.

The real issue is John Edwards new this skeleton was in his closet yet he still decided to keep running for the Democratic nomination.

CAP-872,

We're talking about Katie's ability to pick a winner (from among Republican candidates she supports). She missed the boat on both Michael Tenenbaum and Roberto Arellano. She has zero credibility in supporting candidates who can win races. Sorry you were unable to grasp the subtlety of my point.

I had to laugh at her dig on Jeff Bennett's "Mighty Whitey" bumper sticker, which was his well-known nickname in the DA's Office (a reference to his fair skin). When you ain't got nothing, you really need to grasp for straws I guess.

All I know is the VCRCC has gone down the tubes since Katie Teague left. The way the VCRCC is going Katie will do their autopsy.

Wah-hooh!!! What a hoot! The VCRCC has gone down the tubes since Katie left? Stop it, already. You're killing me here...

KJQ-
It matters not to the Ventura County Republican Party that it is losing members left and right, and turned blue this year. That is not how they measure success.

It appears that the Republican Central Committee has a single agenda - take over the schools and infuse a right-wing, extremist curriculum. If the parents protest, then close the schools and bring in charters run by right-wing extremist charter companies that will then make millions off the tax dollars.

Wow, conspiracy theories abound on this blog. It seems like the best course of action to change the VCRCC, if you're so dissatisfied with it, would be to run for a seat on the Central Committee and initiate some change from within.

Otherwise, you just sound like a big whiner...
