( This video is from the Ventura County Chamber of Commerce forum between the two candidates.)
Newspaper endorsements are coming in for the State Senate candidates. So far Tony Strickland has picked up the endorsement of The Signal, Santa Clarita's newspaper. Hannah-Beth Jackson picked up the support of the Los Angeles Times.
Click on continue reading to see the press releases from the campaigns about these endorsements.
When candidates do not get endorsements they frequently spin that they didn't want them anyway, or that newspaper endorsements don't matter.
But reading these two press releases they clearly do matter to these campaigns. Who do you expect The Star to endorse? I don't know much about the process and I don't have any inside information on the subject.
But I do expect that they will endorse Hannah-Beth Jackson. Do you agree?
What endorsements are available for either candidate in the last remaining days? Anyone know who has tried to stay neutral thus far?

STRICKLAND CONTINUES TO RACK UP KEY ENDORSEMENTS IN THE DISTRICT
The Signal Newspaper Latest In Santa Clarita Valley Support
(Santa Clarita) Tony Strickland continues to rack up endorsements in key parts of the District. The most recent endorsement comes from The Signal, Santa Clarita Valley's daily newspaper which follows the city's entire city council, local Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, and Congressman Buck McKeon in supporting the state senate candidate. The endorsement also comes on the heels of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger - California's greenest Governor - who threw his support behind Strickland. Schwarzenegger sees Strickland's independent leadership as an asset Sacramento desperately needs.
"Tony has a record of fighting for the taxpayer," said Assemblymember Cameron Smyth (Santa Clarita). "Tony has the vision to get California's economy back on track by opposing oppressive tax increases and making a public policy investment in renewable energy which will create jobs and end our dependence on foreign oil."
The Signal endorsed Strickland on what the District has known for a decade - that Strickland is a tax fighter who has a plan for the economy. His strong record and unique ideas for repairing our economy have gained him broad support that includes voters from all political parties.
"I want to thank The Signal for their official endorsement," said Strickland. "I am honored to have them join the overwhelming support I have received in the Santa Clarita Valley and throughout the district."
###
Dear Friend,Today The Los Angles Times strongly endorsed Hannah-Beth Jackson for State Senate, stating:
"The Times has no problem making its choice. We wholeheartedly back Jackson. The environmental and education credentials she built up as a member of the Assembly will be put to good use in the Senate, and we're counting on her to help work through California's budget mess."
Despite the millions of dollars that Tony Strickland and his friends in the tobacco, oil, insurance and banking industries are spending, Hannah-Beth Jackson's campaign is continuing to gain momentum.
But we could use your help now more than ever. There are just 11 days left until Election Day, and thousands of voters are voting every day by mail.
Please volunteer today to help Hannah-Beth to victory on November 4th.
We have phone banks in Conejo, Ventura, Santa Barbara and Simi Valley, and we're walking door-to-door every weekend in neighborhoods throughout the district.
Call our Volunteer Coordinator, Elena Richardson, to sign up, and join other advocates for change in your neighborhood. You can also stop by any one of our campaign offices to pick up a Lawn Sign.

Didn't the SB paper(s) endorse someone?
Brian, I think you should include readership numbers and if the periodical is weekly or daily so your blog readership can compare apples to apples.
The Signal is doing its usual all Republican endorsement. I know it is a daily but don't know how many subscribers.
Here's the endorsement:
Tony Strickland for 19th Senate District
Tom McClintock is running for a U.S congressional seat and doing it in Sacramento, leaving an open seat in a Republican district that is centered in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties and includes a weirdly gerrymandered sliver of the SCV.
The primaries in the 19th Senate District gave us polar opposites: an ultraconservative, anti-tax Republican in Tony Strickland and an ultraliberal, environmental and labor activist in Hannah-Beth Jackson.
With voter registration margins narrowing in Santa Barbara and Ventura, the California Democratic Party is targeting the 19th Senate District in hopes of taking away this traditionally Republican seat.
Strickland will take the Santa Clarita portion, as his views dovetail with those of Santa Clarita's more conservative majority.
The Santa Barbara Independent also endorsed Hannah-Beth. That's the paper the reporters fled to from the News-Press, which is down to almost no staff now.
UCSB's paper also endorsed Hannah-Beth. Love this quote:
“Jackson looks even better when pitted against Tony Strickland. We fundamentally disagree with almost everything Strickland stands for. If he is elected, we’re moving.
Santa Barbara News-Press, the county's most widely read daily paper, endorses Strickland...
Opinion: Tony Strickland for state Senate
October 28, 2008 12:00 AM
The right choice to represent the state Senate's 19th District couldn't be more clear.
Do you want a candidate known for extreme partisan politics -- one who's distorted her resume, alienated many Santa Barbarans and plotted to hold the state's budget hostage for political gain?
Or do you want a stable hand in Sacramento during this time of economic uncertainty?
As Senate candidate Tony Strickland has noted:
"Our financial markets are unstable and our economy is in shambles. Californians are frustrated, suspicious and angry because they feel deceived by partisan politicians who offer no solutions. They are worried about losing their retirement savings, the equity they have
in their homes and, in some cases, their jobs."
We have faith that Mr. Strickland will do his best to hold the line against tax hikes and fee increases that your family can't afford. Too many state lawmakers are out of touch with the challenges facing California households. Their way of dealing with the state's budget problem consists of either trying to find new ways to take money from you, or papering it over and pushing it off to future generations.
Mr. Strickland says, "Let me fight for you."
If one looks at the record of his opponent, her motto might as well be "let me fight against you."
Vote for Tony Strickland on Nov. 4.

Circulation
The publishers report that circulation has increased during the commotion involving multiple resignations. Figures provided to prospective advertisors have indicated a decline in South Santa Barbara County subscriptions during 2006 from 31,000 in January to 27,000 in June.[citation needed] Total circulation figures dropped by approximately 2,000 readers, or about 5%, between Fall, 2005 and Fall, 2006.[122][123] Between Spring 2006 and Spring 2007, News-Press weekday circulation fell 9.5%, one of the biggest declines in the Southern California region.[124] Readership for the Santa Maria Times, the major daily newspaper of northern Santa Barbara County, increased by 6% during the same time period.[125]

The Santa Barbara Independent is a free arts and entertainment newsweekly published in Santa Barbara, California. The paper, which is published every Thursday and was founded in November 1986, has a circulation of over 40,000 and an audited readership of more than 120,000. The paper features long and short news stories, in-depth arts, music, book, and film coverage, an entertainment calendar, a lifestyle section, and reviews of restaurants and culture. The Independent is also known for investigative reporting on a variety of issues, from the environment to local politics.
Although the paper is published weekly, after the beginning of the Santa Barbara News-Press controversy the Independent has implemented web based columns and news articles at Independent.com. The internet edition is updated daily, and more frequently during dramatic local events, such as the 2008 Gap Fire. According to publicly accessible web analytics, Independent.com is the most read locally oriented news website in the Santa Barbara region.
The paper has been described by editor-in-chief Marianne Partridge as somewhat liberal.[2]
A December 2004 report by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies detailed the demographics of the Independent's readership. The paper's audience is predominately female (68%) and nearly half of readers are over 45 years of age.
Three popular columnists who quit or were fired from the News-Press during the Santa Barbara News-Press controversy are now contributors to Independent.
The News Press has no credibility in Santa Barbara:

The above is an interesting read on the troubles the Santa Clarita Signal is having. Circulation is around 15K or so.
The LA Times is the second largest paper in the nation and has a weekend circulation of over 1 million people.
Nothing compares to this giant (not that the News-Press or the Signal were even close).
The "News"-Press is an effin joke with less than zero credibility. The reports above touch on that history since mid 2006.
That endorsement actually will hurt Strickland.
Beth Jackson refuses to kiss the Libertarian misogynistic ass of the unilateral editorial writer there, so naturally he makes up any chit to slam Jackson. Issues no longer matter there; only personalities do.
At least Santa Clarita Signal has some kind of editorial board that justifies their all-Republican stand.

A new low today: Strickland's IEC went after Hannah-Beth's daughter today. His own campaign faked that they had the LA Times endorsement when Hannah-Beth does.
This is sickening.
But the VC Reporter endorsed Hannah-Beth today:
“In the race for state senate, the choice is obvious. Tony Strickland brings little to offer the district as a career politician digging deep in tobacco companies’ pockets to run his campaign.
Oh boy, the VC Reporter. That should be enough to tip the scales......not!!!
I noticed the Star, a real paper, endorsed Audra Strickland today.
