I thought about online advertising after seeing this story about the Barack Obama campaign putting up spots in the online video game Burnout Paradise. The ads could be targeted by state to deliver a local message. This is a new era of campaign tactics.

Have you been noticing the advertising the different political campaigns have been paying for on The Star's various pages? I have seen ads for Barack Obama, Paul Miller, and Hannah-Beth Jackson on my page.

What do you think about the ads as far as reaching voters?

I would think that most people that read newspapers are usually highly informed and less likely to be persuaded by an ad, but I could be wrong.

They seem like they would be highly effective at driving a narrative. Have you clicked on the ads? The Hannah-Beth Jackson ad has a powerful charge that attempts to connect Tony Strickland to the current housing crisis.

Would you advise a candidate to use online advertising? I would if it was cheap and showed up in google search results.

Yeah that's a great add...makes it seem like it was TS who caused this lending mess but the truth is...
TS voted No and HBJ voted Yes for AB 489 to pass, which it did and we are still in this mess. She says its because he watered it down...what? Why did she vote to pass it then? Your legislation did not work...take responsibility.

On line advertising is where we are headed and it is interesting to see which candidates are smart enough or have money enough to grasp it.

If memory serves me correctly, Christy Weir also advertised in her run for City Council. She won quite handily.

I saw HBJ's hardcopy ad today in the Ventura County Star that says Strickland is a Republican idealogue and checked the right wing blog, FlashReport. He is still advertising on it. I guess I can ignore all his words regarding wanting the Dem and Independent vote.

I've been advertising a whole lot on Facebook, and to a lesser extent on MySpace with some great results. I'm also starting Google ads soon as well.

For a local candidate there is no better form of effective advertising than online advertising. I've gotten thousands of views for only $20 all from residents of Simi Valley.

I don't think online advertising will ever replace signs, fliers, newspapers, TV ads, etc., but I think they allow you to effectively target a demographic that can't be reached any other way.

Correct, Katie. We were the first ones to place a political ad online with the Star for Christy's campaign last year. The Star has the ability to measure response to it

Given the choice of Taxin' Jackson or Phony-Tony, I'm going with Jackson. She knows that government needs revenue to provide the much needed services that we all demand. Phony-Tony, on the other hand, packs his pockets with the taxpayers' money, but claims to not want government to provide services to those most in need. I suppose it is all a matter of definitions to the Phony. He doesn't see himself in need, so it is OK for him to game the system like his mentor carpetbagger McClintock did for so many years.

Go Hannah-Beth!

So, Marie, tell me more about this online advertising///Inquiring minds want to know.

Hey Barb,

I was over in Simi recently and I saw Sojka signs all over the place, including some super sized ones.

I didn't see any signs for you. What's up with that?

Sojka needs all the help he can get....He thinks signs are the answer...... LOL
Nice hearing form you Laura. Hope you're feeling better.
