Measure U

Is it over? What happens now?

I didn't see the news release that mentioned I was going to moderate the debate. Thanks to both sides for inviting me.

Measure U debate tonight

From staff reports
Thursday, October 23, 2008

A public debate on Measure U will be held tonight to air the pros and cons of the proposal to create a unified Camarillo school district.

The district would merge Camarillo's K-8 Pleasant Valley School District with Camarillo and Somis high school students, who now go to campuses in the Oxnard Union High School District.

Voters throughout the high school district will decide the issue Nov. 4.

Organizers from 4AlltheKids.org, a group formed to oppose unification, said the town hall-style debate is expected to have speakers in favor and opposed to Measure U. The debate is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club of Camarillo, 1500 Temple Ave.

Brian Dennert, a political blogger for VenturaCountyStar.com
, will serve as moderator, and members of the audience will be allowed to submit questions before the debate. The moderator will select the final questions.

I think there is still a slight chance that Unification might pass and both sides are waiting for the provisional ballots to be counted.

I think the odds are extremely against it passing. The absentees and the provisional ballots seem to favor No on U. Being the supersticious person that I am, I haven't popped the the cork on champagne bottle yet. Remember there is still the lawsuit out there as well. Debra Credick stated " she wouldn't pursue the lawsuit if it failed partly because it would cost over a milllion dollars". She is already backtracking. Not that anyone should be shocked by that. So this means PVSD will some how funnel money into CU's pockets to help them out Im sure.
I heard a rumor that PVSD is taking back the teachers raises to help with the mid year budget cuts. Has anyone heard if this is true?

Today's results from division of elections:
Last Updated: November 24, 2008 4:11 PM

Measure U Camarillo Sch. Dist.
209/209 100.00%
Vote CountPercent
YES42,81149.03%
NO44,50550.97%
Total87,316100.00%

Does this mean in two years there will be a new Measure U on the ballot? If so, will it be titled Measure U to promote recycling of signs?

People of Camarillo are really really sick of the unification issue and everything associated with it - parents, teachers and the community have all been annoyed by the PVSD board and its the PVSD board that has been pushing unification. Time to start over.

So No Cred Deb's obsession with the Unification issue will continue. What a bore.

I am not so sure that "People of Camarillo" are sick of unification Katie. I bet a check of the results will show that the "People of Camarillo" actually passed Measure U by a fairly significant margin. I also bet that a poll of Camarillo teachers in PVSD would show overwhelming support for Measure U as well.

I am not a fan of the school board directing this issue, but I wish that the criticism of school boards would be fair and balanced. Oxnard High School Board shares a bit of the blame for the protracted fight. I do not believe that unification is a dead issue and I don't think it should be.

I am sure that if you were able to separate the Camarillo results and isolate those that received PVSD info on Unifications versus those that didn't, it would be pretty clear-cut.

But you are right, I can only speak for the 4 voters in my Cam household and we are all sick of the topic.

Time to start over and with a fresh plate. One that isn't sullied and doesn't have any political component.

147 PVSD teachers voted to support Measure U. 40 voted not to support and 100 didn't vote partially for fear of administration retaliation.

Not really supported by PVSD teachers.

Let it die a dignified death and lets move forward without the 10 year distraction 'U' has been.

The Fat Lady is singing and Measure U has failed! I bet the people who want Unification will not give up, I wonder how many of those people are saying the No on 8 side should give up? Ironic.

I went to the OUHSD board meeting last Wed., and John Alamillo also showed up. We both were expecting some Yes on U people there but not a soul and no speakers to the U issue. Maybe they are waiting for the official results to be announced.

A couple of the board members mentioned that it looked as if U would fail and the superintendent had thank yous to spread around to those who fought U.

Other than that, there was no mention of Camarillo or the future going forward on the new schools. Which is not unreasonable because nothing's been decided officially. I'm curious to see if the yes on U representatives go to the December meeting since the final result should be released by then.

Maybe, everybody's just tired.

FYI, the OUHSD board will appoint a new member to replace Irene Pinkard, who was elected to Oxnard City Council. The board will advertise for anyone wishing to be considered to contact OUHSD beginning after school returns in January. The board will likely interview those interested and make a selection. That individual will fill out Mrs. Pinkard's term. It's open to all residents within the OUHSD area -- Oxnard, Camarillo and Port Hueneme.

The other prospect is to have an election, but it was noted that would cost the district an estimated $750,000 to hold a special election. So, that's not a good option.

Though its expensive to have an election, I bet that that is what the YES on U people will push for. Anything to spend money that should go to the kids. I agree with you Rick - its not a good option.

It's not their money. They will find a sucker to fund this frivolity and the district will be drug in. So far they have managed to spend $500,000 and staff time on an issue that was estimated to cost $26,000.

Rick,

I think it was wise for OUHSD not to talk about U too much without a decision being rendered. It was just way to close with many ballots left to be counted.

About the YES reps coming to any meeting. Although they may have had a lot of support at the ballot box, they never had much support at meeting of rallys for their cause. Villegas even sent out robocalls to all parents in PVSD to show up at meetings. No one ever did. At every event they had including the BBQ it was basically the steering committee and thats it. I think if they pursue the lawsuit they will lose even more support. I think you are right, people are just tired of Unification.

I think with all the budget cuts and everything else going on. I think we all need to work together to preserve the education of our children and not waste time with court costs and fighting. Lets move forward for the children.

I definitely agree we need to move forward but I have a feeling it will be paralysis as usual until the court case gets going again in March. Does anyone know exactly what that entails? My understanding is the plaintiffs want to get a court to agree that the vote should be Cam/Somis only. Of course, even if they get it, Oxnard will appeal (as is its right) and this just keeps going and going.

Of course, the measure could be back on the ballot in two years and we get to do this all over again.

Oh, one thing I did forget to mention was that it was said by one of the board members that a "former PVSD board member" went to the County Board of Education to request that the OUHSD change its structure to allow for board members to represent specific areas, such as Camarillo, Port Hueneme, Oxnard. I'm assuming it would be based on population and only people in those areas would vote for that specific spot.
