This committee would be a great way for future candidates to get a better understanding of school finances and oversight of the budget. I recommend anyone that thinks they can help to join. I know a few of my readers have thoughts to share about the committee.

Back when I started this blog, Tim Keaney had a local education themed blog for The Star. Even though we seemed to disagree more than we agreed Tim was always a worthy intellectual sparing partner. I read his blog often to understand a different perspective. Tim, why would you recommend people get involved with committees like this oversight board?

As a way of saying thanks to Tim Keaney click here for a link to an education magazine that would be a great gift for the conservative pundit in your family. I pick it up from time to time to look read innovative education ideas. It skews to the right in almost every discussion but it is always well reasoned and argued.

To all my readers, what local citizens do you want to nominate for this committee?

I nominate Mike Chandler, Bruce Witkin, Ray Cruz, and Brad Jashinsky. All of them could potentially learn more about our local schools while serving.

School committee is seeking volunteers

From staff reports
Sunday, November 9, 2008

The Simi Valley Unified School District Board is looking for volunteers to serve on the Bond Oversight Committee, which will review bond expenditures.

The community passed a general obligation bond on March 2, 2004, which raises $145 million to repair and upgrade school facilities.

State law requires that a Citizens' Oversight Committee monitor expenditures, provide accountability and report on the progress of bond projects.

The committee must include people active in business, senior and taxpayer organizations as well as parents of Simi Valley students, one of whom is active in the PTA or school site council. Other people may also be on the committee.

The deadline to submit applications is Dec. 1.

Anyone interested in getting an application may call the business office at 306-4510 or complete an online application at http://www.simi.k12.ca.us, C4 Bond under the District Office tab.
