The Counting Continues

The vote counts aren't done yet but in the latest tally Tony Strickland continues to lead. Click here for a short news report on the subject.

In related news rumors continue to circulate that Audra Strickland is looking at what seat she can run for next.

I don't mind people people being involved with public service as a career but it is funny when the same crowd that supports new term limits keep running for different offices.

UPDATE: Looks like it is over. Tony Strickland's allies are declaring victory.

Tony Strickland is now the leader of Ventura County Republicans.

I will write more about this when the final vote count is announced.

How do you spell hypocrite?

SB County just reported again and TS's lead has dropped to 990 votes.

She conceded. It's all over.

I'm not a big fan of term limits myself, although I have supported term limits in some instances. Sometimes term limits are the only way to get rid of entrenched incumbents, given the gerrymandered districts we have and the enormous advantages incumbents have when it comes to fundraising from special interest groups who interact with the government.

I'd much prefer honestly-drawn and unbiased districts which make it feasible for the voters to throw out politicians who deserve to get the boot. Hopefully Prop 11 will help to do so. I'd also prefer a smaller, less intrusive government which didn't have favors and money to dispense to special interests who pay off the politicians, and which also couldn't tax or regulate to death any businesses or other organizations which failed to pay Danegeld in the form of campaign contributions.

However, I have much less concern about politicians who run for different offices. By definition they are not intrenched, and we do not need to employ a last-resort measure such as term limits to prevent them from remaining in office indefinitely. All we have to do is not elect them to the new office in the first place.

Daniel:

I totally agree with you on this one.

The truth is that voters have always had term limits - they're called elections.

The problem is that voters are often both selective in their electoral preferences and fickle in their electoral choices at the polling place.

In this voter's opinion, it is always better for like-minded voters to band together, build majority coalitions, and work hard to either elect, or un-elect the candidate(s) of their choice than it is for them to whine about ethical entitlements and depend on term-limits to do their heavy lifting for them.

But then again, term-limits, like ideology, spare some voters the torture of thought.
