Francis Chan of Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley discusses Proposition 8. Not what you think!

I found this video of Francis Chan, Pastor of Cornerstone Church in Simi Valley, discussing the supporters of Proposition 8.

In his sermon he criticizes the hate he saw coming from the Yes on 8 protesters.

But before you think he is agreeing with you or your cause make sure to watch the whole video and listen to his comments in context.

Regardless of your theological views, church membership, or political views Pastor Chan is a compassionate man.

Sorry it took so long but I have been going through my inbox from the last few months and I just got around to posting this picture submitted to me from before the election.

Even though Proposition 8 didn't turn out the way I wanted it to I was inspired by seeing so many kids that weren't involved in politics before coming out to support equality.

Thanks for standing up for equality!

Amen.

A very interesting vid....

I've said it before, on these boards and elsewhere, that disagreeing with someone does not mean you have to hate or revile them.

Not everyone on the left is a "bleeding heart", not everyone on the right is "wingnut/nutjob". They just don't agree with you (where ever you are).

The stereotyped image replaces the insight that comes with actually knowing someone that things differently than you do. I can be a challenge, but it isn't un-doable.

An interesting clip...too bad it wasn't longer.

Some really good points made here. Pastor Chan emphasizes the importance of loving one another, regardless of beliefs, backgrounds, social status, or what we do in our private lives. And I couldn't agree with him more.

My point has always been that, in this same context, we have to look at both sides of the Prop. 8 issue. In other words, it's no less hateful to call someone who supported Prop. 8 a bigot or a homophobe than it is for someone to call a gay person a pervert or a sinner.

I am glad that you finally agree that the Yes on 8 protesters were frequently motivated by hate and not love.

I agreed to no such thing and you know it. Most of those supporting Prop. 8 were not motivated by hate, but rather by preserving the institution of marriage as between one man and one woman only. You tell me how that equates to hate.

On the other hand, there were many "No on 8" folks who I witnessed personally using the terms "bigot", "homophobe", and other blatant expressions of anger and hatred on signs and posters that were aimed specifically at those who disagreed with them. Now, you tell me which would you describe as a more hateful message?

I think you need to listen to Rev. Chan's sermon again, if you even listened to it at all.

Leave it to you to listen to a sermon critical of the Yes on 8 people and immediately go after the no side. Why not discuss where you actually agree with or disagree with Pastor Chan instead of using this as another opportunity to attack people in support of gay rights?

His sermon was basically look inside yourself and you did the exact reverse again.

To our great big family of flaming liberals, homophobic bigots, tax & spend Dems, hateful far right Repubs, commie extremists, gay & lesbian militants, tree-hugging environmentalists, climate-warming corporate apologists and all the other wonderful eccentrics that share the same broad roof that is America,

....have a very Happy & Holy Holiday, whatever your perspectives and persuasions, and a Rich & Rewarding New Year.

To quote a three year old:

"We love, We don't hate"

Everyone should embrace this!

Listen,

It appears you missed some of Pastor Chan's points too. Namely, the one that pleads for people to be tolerant of one another's views. I defy you to show me where the "No on 8" folks have been accepting of the will of the majority of voters in this state with regard to gay marriage.

I agree wholeheartedly with the Pastor's views on acceptance and love and that includes those you disagree with as well. It's obvious that you need to look inside yourself and find the love as well.

Chan says that Jesus would have loved them (homosexuals). Without question he would have.

Chan explains that while Jesus may have been among homosexuals and loved them, He would have explained that "here's what the Kingdom of God is and here's something better.."

My question is, better than what?

I think he was speaking in more general terms and those comments would have applied to anyone. In other words, the Kingdom of God is a better place than the material world we all live in today, regardless of race, color, creed, ethnicity, or sexual preferences.

And I agree that Jesus would have loved homosexuals. I think most of us who voted "yes" on Prop. 8 love homosexuals too. They are just as entitled to God's love and blessings as everyone else. They are God's creatures just like the rest of us.

That's where many of the "No on 8" folks miss the boat. For me, this wasn't a vote against homosexuality at all. It was simply a vote for preserving marriage.

I, as a "homosexual" am profoundly mistrustful of anyone who calles me a homosexual. It's like calling an African American a "darkie." It's a clearly pejorative term, born in the days when we were though of as psychologically impaired. We're gay. This term, by itself, undercuts Chan's argument. Jesus would have known this. Chan does not. So much for hanging with the que*rs.
