Jason Hodge Back In Town

A friend of mine Jason Hodge wrote several updates from DC detailing his experience at the inauguration of President Barack Obama. He is back in town and sent in a letter to the editor that was published thanking people. Here is his letter:

I would like to thank The Star and Brian Dennert for allowing me to blog my experience at the 44th inaugural on their Web site. Had Brian not been cracking the whip on me, I would not have myself a personal history of this fantastic experience.
Kudos to The Star as well for having such great coverage of all Venturans who were in attendance.
I would also like to thank U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly for helping me orchestrate my trip and being such a gracious host. Not only did he provide us with two tickets into the inauguration, but also, when I found myself in a two-hour line for the House office building, he personally walked out to get them to me. He and his staff could not have been more accommodating.
-- Jason Hodge, Oxnard

Jason, thank you for reporting the events back to us and for sending in pictures. Some of my readers that don't comment said they really enjoyed your entries.

In other related Rep. Gallegly news do you remember he briefly ran for governor? And while googling his run for governor I found an article detailing his stand against bear baiting. I am firmly against bear baiting, but I admit I thought it had something to do with circus bears. Seems like a logical law.

Both stories are old news and aren't enough to post an entry on alone but they are interesting to me.

Ventura County Supervisor Peter Foy Campaigning Statewide

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

peter_foy.png

I stumbled across the ad above while looking at FlashReport.org, a California Republican blog and news summary page.

Have you heard of the California chapter of this group that Peter Foy is promoting?

From what I gather they are a small government, anti-tax, anti-regulation, and human caused global warming denying group. I have seen a few press releases and events where they bring an inflatable ATM ( that stands for Already Taxes to the Max) and argue that the state budget should not be fixed with higher taxes.

Here is a video of Peter Foy at an ATM event:

I would think this points to Peter Foy planning to run for a higher office (Rumor is he is thinking of running for Insurance Commissioner in 2010) and advocating for conservative causes could help raise his profile and make more contacts statewide.

Ventura County Supervisor Peter Foy has been a long time supporter of conservative candidates and causes. Back in 1996 he supported far right candidate Alan Keyes in the Republican primary. If Peter Foy does run for statewide office I expect his past support for Alan Keyes will be a powerful criticism that could stop his ability to win over moderate voters. Is 1996 too distant to use in a campaign?

Alan Keyes sued to stop President Barack Obama from taking the office because of the conspiracy theory that Barack Obama wasn't born in America.

Alan Keyes said that Hillary Clinton moving to New York to run for the vacant senate seat endangered federalism. A few years later he moved to Illinois to run against Barack Obama to protect federalism.

Alan Keyes wants to eliminate the right to vote directly for senators and restore this function to the state legislatures.

Alan Keyes said that it is selfish hedonism to be gay and when the interviewer asked if the daughter of Vice President Cheney fit that description he said "Of course she is. That goes by definition."

Alan Keyes dropped out of the Republican Party in 2008 after failing to get almost any attention in the primaries ( did you remember he ran?) then tried to get the nomination of the Constitution Party, then after he failed to get their nomination he ran as an independent candidate. The platform of the Constitution Party doesn't appeal to the electorate of California.

I am sure we have all cast a vote here of there for a candidate we would prefer not to have linked to us but the difference is Peter Foy was a leader trying to get Alan Keyes elected. A fair defense I would expect Peter Foy to claim is that most of the wackiest things Alan Keyes has said happened after Peter Foy supported him.

I think Peter Foy has done a decent and effective job representing Simi Valley but his politics don't seem like a match for California. But would that be ignored in a campaign for Insurance Commissioner?

If Peter Foy runs for Insurance Commissioner and Audra Strickland continues to run for Secretary of State Ventura County elected officials might start getting more attention. Anyone remember that last Ventura County politician to get elected statewide? Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell's state senate district included Santa Barbara and Ventura County but he is from Santa Barbara.

So, what do you say? Do you want Supervisor Foy to run for Insurance Commissioner? I would support him if his platform focused on the job of Insurance Commissioner, if I agreed with his ideas for the office, and if he wasn't going to use the position to advocate for far right causes and candidates. The ATM stuff doesn't surprise me but some of the other issues do. Peter, in retrospect does Alan Keyes represent your world view?

What do you think? Is Peter Foy too conservative for a bland, but important, job like Insurance Commissioner?

( Talking dogs = funny. )

Simi Valley's Dog Park is scheduled to open in March. Click here for the rules and information on the grand opening. I am glad are park board has been able to make this happen.

Now it looks like Moorpark is also trying to open a dog park.

Are you pleased with the level of services, the tax rate, and the management of your local park district? I think our park district is well run.

Steve Poizner Campaigning Early

I know many of you read my blog mostly to find out what is going on from different sides of the political debate. One of the ways I find out what's going on is by signing up for almost every newsletter out there. You could sign up for them too but do you want to get messages from every campaign out there? It is early in the campaign for governor but of all the candidates thus far Steve Poizner is campaigning the most aggressively. He sends out updates on his campaign and his record as insurance commissioner quite often.

The other candidate, whether you like it or not, is San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

What do you think? Do you know who you want to support in 2010 for governor? Do you think it is too early to be campaigning and instead these candidates should focus on the current jobs? Which candidate do you want to hear from more?

Hannah-Beth Jackson Staying Involved

Hannah-Beth Jackson clearly intends to keep speaking out on issues important to her including environmental issues and transportation issues. She sent out an email to her list of supporters asking people to attend a transportation conference this Saturday.

Click on continue reading for details and the email from her.

Click here for a blog focusing on Santa Barbara City Council Member Das Williams who is helping put together the conference.

Will she run again? I guess we will find out after the 2010 redistricting is done.

The process for the next redistricting is going to be interesting. California might be losing a House seat after 2010 and Ventura County could be split in so many different ways for state assembly and state senate seats.

Firefighter Nathan Sweet Running for Moorpark City Council

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Nathan_sweet.jpg

Firefighter Nathan Sweet is running for the Moorpark City Council in the June 2009 election to replace of Janice Parvin, who was elected to be mayor.

From what I have seen of Nathan Sweet he is going to running an energetic campaign. Many city council candidates try to stick to tried and true classic cliches instead of discussing public policy but Nathan Sweet in a recent Acorn article articulated his position on DARE and other programs.

Here are some quotes from the article:

Statistics released by the Ventura County Sheriff's Department show that Moorpark is the only community in the county where crime from January to June 2008 increased over the previous year, Sweet said.

"Violent crimes increased by 40 percent last year and property crimes rose by 25 percent," he said.

"That's one of the main reasons why I want to serve. I want to curb that trend and the best way to do that is to add more police on the street," he said. "Even one additional patrol car could make a big difference."

And that could be done, he said, without straining the city budget.

The city currently pays $190,000 a year for the DARE program because it's not on the list of federally approved programs that would be sponsored by the government.

According to Sweet, DARE could be replaced with a different drug prevention program that has been shown to be effective and is covered by the government. The money saved could be used for extra policing.

"A police car has higher visibility; it could cut down crime and the graffiti we see everywhere," he said.

Mike Chandler's The Simi Show Attracting Attention

Mike Chandler, the blogger behind VoteSimiValley.com has launched a new internet show called " The Simi Show" and it has been getting more and more attention. Last Friday The Acorn had a great review of his videos and his plans to expand his coverage of local people and events.

Click here for The Acorn article.

Click here for The Simi Show website.

Even though it would seem like Mike and I would be in competition to the point of not mentioning each other because we focus on many of the same issues, that's not the way I see it. I like the idea of listening to more and compelling voices. He is irreverent, funny, and talented. Go check out his website. he might become his own Shop Simi Valley campaign.

Mike, it looks like The Acorn should issue a correction though. The article stated that:

Chandler's fire was lit during last fall's election season, when he created www.votesimivalley.com and began asking tough questions of local candidates.

Despite his opposition to the three incumbents in the City Council election, Chandler said, his new venture, "The Simi Show," isn't at all about pushing his own personal political views.

But your own blog entry had many nice things to say of Council Member Williamson:

Last night, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Barbra Williamson and her family, friends and supporters. They are truly a dynamic group of people and it was a real pleasure. Barbra's entire family is very friendly not to mention engaging and passionate about the issues. I have zero doubt that my vote for Barbra Williamson for Simi Valley City Council is the right one.

Get a correction in and they will put your name in the paper again! Did your family hang the article on the fridge?

Local real estate professional Ted Mackel will be hosting a tech night to help local businesses and politicians find innovative ways to communicate with the public.

He writes a blog mostly focused on real estate but he occasionally writes on a variety of topics. Recently he wrote a criticism of the city's tax and growth policies. Click here to read his entry.

If you are interested in social networking for political or business reasons his workshop could be very helpful. As part of his presentation he is going to give an overview of the social networking that helped propel President Barack Obama to victory.

Ted, why do you think John McCain' supporters weren't as successful at using new forms of technology to support their candidate? Any chance you will be using some of these techniques and ideas to support any local politicians?

Any of you going? If you make any Youtube videos of the night I will post them here for those of us that won't be there.

Steve Greenberg's Editorial on Editorial Cartoons

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Prop8Flags.jpg

Editorial cartoons were among the first political media that I got into when I was much younger. That and letters to the editor. I continue to enjoy political cartoons but I haven't been into letters to the editor in a long time.

I have always been a big fan of editorial cartoons from the likes of Michael Ramirez to Ted Rall and Tom Tomorrow. I like cartoons from the left and the right because they so often go straight to the real issue in a debate. Editorial cartoons are the center of the editorial page and they are a top feature in any newspaper. It is funny that the Los Angles Times gets attacked for being a liberal paper when for years they have the most valuable political space on their editorial page to the very conservative Michael Ramirez.

I don't normally like local cartoonist or small town editorial cartoons because they are often full of cliches and not really dedicated to the local political scene anyways. But there was always an exception for me and that is Steve Greenberg.

Recently The Star, like many newspapers has been cutting back on staff and Greenberg's position was among them. It is a real loss to his local fans. But he has landed on his feet and will be doing cartoons for a variety of sources including the local alternative weekly The Ventura County Reporter. I know The Star will replace the space with other talented writers but I will miss his cartoons.

Here is an excerpt of Steve Greenberg's recent editorial in The Ventura County Reporter:

IT'S BEEN the best of times, and the worst of times, for the field of editorial cartooning.

Cartoonists are able to draw with the added impact of color, to animate their work and to self-publish online without any need for a newspaper, the traditional forum for the art form. The demographics and styles of the cartoonists have never been more diverse.

There were well over 200 staff cartoonists in the 1980s, and perhaps just 80 now; exact counts are tricky, but the numbers are clearly plunging. In 2008 alone, at least 16 newspaper positions disappeared (and for good measure, one online position).

Mike said I should post it because:

Ventura County Republican leader and State Senator Tony Strickland will be meeting with citizens in Goleta at a card table event. While State Senator Tony Strickland and I disagree on many issues I appreciate that he is willing to take questions from people directly. What would you tell him if you had a few minutes to sit down and discuss state issues?

I would ask him which Democratic leaders he has been meeting in his efforts to work with members of both parties to improve the economy and help the budget problems we are facing.

When was the last time you remember Rep. Elton Gallegly announcing he was going to be at an event and take questions directly from the public?

Reporting From DC: Jason Hodge Dispatch #5

ball_stage_hodge.jpg

Jason,

Thanks for writing all of these reports. I know between all of the walking, the cold, and traveling you must be tired. We appreciate it. I know you will come back even more motivated to answer the call that Barack Obama has put forth for our generation.

Here is Jason's latest report:

Brian,

This blogging gig is tough. Every time I need to sleep I feel like I need to sit down and write something. I have a new appreciation for you and Marie.

I would love to describe today in some sweeping emotional tones but to be honest Im just too tired. You saw it on television. You believe in change. You don't need me. We are all here together in spirit. Thanks for reading this and know you all have my love. I'll just try to give you the facts to the little bits that your missing (or not missing).

We started early today watching TV to see if traffic was impossible or the metro was our best bet. By about 630 my sister decided that we were stupid enough to try to drive all the way to union station.

Stupid like a fox! Apparently everyone else chickened out from driving because we drove 10 miles in seven minutes and had no problems . Every 3 or so blocks we'd hit a military checkpoint but we'd just say " were going to union station" and our boys in camo would smile and let us through.

The line into the inauguration was long but not too unwieldy. It took us a good hour and a half to get through but it was little to ask to be a part of this important occasion. Once in we had a good spot just 200 yds from the podium. I was happy as a clam but my 5'4 sister wasn't quite in the clear spot that I was in. I would normally feel pity for her but when she was coming back from the facilities she literally bumped into Samuel S Jackson who was waking with Mariah Carey. Almost makes it worth the 8 degree temperature.

The inaugural was amazing. I know most of you saw it so theres no reason to recap. The only thing you may have missed was that every time the announcer said "please be seated" we all cracked up because there was not a piece of dirt left to sit on. My only other non-viewable moment was when the presidential motorcade arrived. The crowd went crazy with excitement and love...... then someone realized the president in the motorcade was W. The crowd then immediately bursted into boos. To be honest I thought the crowd was a little tacky but funny nonetheless.

jason_hodge_women's_bathroom.jpg

Later in the evening we headed to the official western ball. It was a fantastic event with people from all over the western states dancing and celebrating the new president. When Obama spoke the crowd was much louder than any other time in the day and the feeling of victory was finally complete. I've been to hundreds of concerts over the years and dozens of political rallies but never have a seen so many people together in a sense of purpose.

jason_hodge_beard.jpg

The night went well overall. If Jay Kapitz has some story about me forgetting one of the tickets and my sister having to rickshaw 20 blocks to go find it I have to say that Kapitz is a pretty shady character and I wouldn't believe a word he says.

Not bad seats!

ObamaDelegates.jpg

Here is the latest update from Jay Kapitz. Get some sleep Jay!

IT IS 6 AM.

I have been awake for 24 hours
.
I have been sandwiched and squeezed and pressed against 2 million to gain access to a plot of earth that was home to stand for half a day. I opened my door at 6 AM and thousands of marchers were marching in unending rivers. Four of us tried to meet three more but the river was blocked by buses and barriers. We called and impossibly our missing three were almost next us. The sign ahead said silver tickets, our match, but we did not move forward for an hour. Then we gambled and reversed against the human gridlock until we found a moving river that flowed to our target. Cold feet and warm spirits were our foundation. We chanted non-stop for hours. You watched it on television. We needed to be there. We chanted goodbye to Bush as the chopper lifted. We cheered or booed our heroes and villains. Mainly we squeezed and shivered because that is what history required today. We cried and laughed a lot.

A party, a ball, another party, a pub. Our ball was too formal, sedate...boring. Barack spoke and he danced with Michelle and it was special after all.

We made new friends on trains, street corners, wherever and whenever. Is DC so great or was this moment just special?

Special thanks to new / old friends from the convention in Denver - Sherry, Tania, Tim - the best reunion possible. New / new friends - Wally, Jennifer, Betsy, Bob, Matt, Dick, Anne - until the next time we need to change the world.

TODAY WAS MY BIRTHDAY. Thanks to all my friends everywhere for making it the best ever. Thank you for your text and voice messages. Congrats to all of the hardworking volunteers. We are the change we have been waiting for.

Until next time, Jay.

torti_hats.JPG
( To my readers: Brad has a bunch of photos to share. If you click on continue reading you can see more. I am going to not use as many photos on the front page to work on how long it takes to load this page for some users)

Here is Brad Torti's entry from today:

Today is a good day.

4:00 - Our friend Ashley wakes up, too excited to sleep.

4:45 - Our cousin David wakes up because "this is the most important inauguration ever, next to George Washington's."

5:00 - Jennie and Brad wake up, and knowing that I must walk the dogs, I ask to sleep in for five more minutes. This is not to say I am not excited, just very cold and apathetic to the dogs' needs.

6:15 - We leave my cousin's house in Georgetown and head over to the Metro in Rosslyn, VA.

6:25 - Parking isn't much of a problem, though it is confusing because of the many road closures on the VA side of DC. We get on the Metro. It's busy.

7:00 - We get off the Metro...35 minutes later on what would normally be a 5 minute ride.

8:00 - We arrive at the corner of 14th and Constitution... 2 blocks from where we stepped off the Metro. A thronging mass of people restricts movement across the street as well as one inch in any direction. We befriend the people near us. We're surprised to see no one has much to complain about as we stand waiting for direction for the next ½ hour with no explanation as to why we are not moving. It is extremely easy to find a fast friend when you are nestled under their armpit in 20 degree pre-dawn weather.

8:27 - We find a spot east of 12th St on the Mall. The 8 blocks in front of us where non-ticketed attendees are permitted to stand is already packed with people 3 ½ hours before the event. We are excited to be located in front of a Jumbotron. We jump around, singing "Lean On Me," with a few of our millions of like-minded friends replayed from the Inaugural Concert on said Jumbotron, just so happy to have made it.

8:30-10:03 - We hang out with new friends from Virginia, Florida, and sections of the Northeast, discussing the extent to which each was involved with Obama's campaign and sharing ground space that we've spoken for. Suddenly the people standing next to us feel like distant extended family. All we need is one commonality to believe we are connected. In between the end of the concert reply and beginning of inaugural festivities, the screen projects images of us, the crowd. We are humbled by our mass. Not having realized that while we reflected on the past couple years, the millions that were predicted to attend were herding in. The San Francisco Boys and Girls Choirs perform to open the Inauguration celebration. As dignitaries and elected officials start filing in after that, and while we stop keeping track of time, there are some very memorable entrances. Among them, cheers from the crowd for Al Gore, Ted Kennedy, the Clintons, Colin Powell, Jimmy Carter, Sandra Day O'Connor, and Michelle, Sasha, and Malia Obama. The crowd doesn't seem sure about how to react to Rick Warren, but when both Bush families arrive, people either ignore them or boo loudly.

12:00 - The swearing in of Barack Hussein Obama, 44th President of the United States, officially begins. Obama seems nervous and stumbles over the first part of the swearing-in, and in the crowd, people let out a smile or giggle. Michelle Obama cries as she holds Lincoln's Bible. Honestly, the moment doesn't seem perfect but it's a rare window into the humanity of a man that so many have built up to be a demi-god. But it is the small things that don't go according to plan that make things memorable. Obama recovers his composure and delivers his Inaugural Address without a hitch, bringing some in the crowd to tears, some to cheers, but all smiling wildly as history unfolds in front of them.

After the address, many in the crowd start leaving, but without specific instructions as to where to go, or which Metro stations are closed, a slow quiet chaos ensues. There are no fights, there are no riots, and there are few swear words. In fact, for all the confusion, for all the misdirection, rumors, and porta-potty prophets (some people took advantage of the abundance of Andy Gumps to "get a perspective" but they never really knew what was going on), the only complaining is in mild jest, and the angriest shouts were simply inquiries about the status of the trains in the Metro: "Is the f*****g Metro running or not?" This is okay, because most of us are wondering the same thing and a slight hush falls over the crowd as we wait to hear if a uniformed someone responds with an answer.

After we resign ourselves to the fact that we are not going to leave the same way we came, things go smoothly. In fact, the obstacles that we overcame that morning we would later recall as a breeze compared to the near aimless wandering that was unfolding before us. First, we head to 12th Street to get on Constitution Ave to pick up the Metro to Rosslyn at Federal Triangle. Unfortunately, but predictably, Constitution Ave is closed for the parade. We retreat to the last known open crossing, 14th St and Constitution, to find it in the same state. After speaking with an Army soldier, we come to realize that the fastest way out is across the National Mall and a long walk to Farragut West. His exact advice, and the only advice we get is simply "Follow the crowd." Farragut West is not ridiculously far, but at what we determine is "Inauguration Shuffle" speed, it takes us 60 minutes to walk less than a mile. We are herded over barricades, across streets, over trampled vines, between porta-potties, and through planters in what we later realize is a giant figure 8. The mass moves blessedly free of injury thanks in large part to dozens of people calling out "Curb!!" over curbs and extending a hand during barricade straddling. Just west of the Washington Monument, we are no longer corralled by the military. Our 4 person group is spit out of the thronging mass one by one. We finally wander into the vast trampled pasture of the National Mall and, slack-jawed and wobbling, migrate through what might have been - in another time and place - a refugee camp. Morale is high, but we are beginning to realize that our bodies are freezing cold. At the far end of the Mall, we cross over a chain link fence which was likely not designed to be walked upon. Now face to face with the Inaugural Parade, the majority of our challenges are closed roads and oncoming traffic. One word: Frogger.

Once we get to Farragut West, we find that it is impassible. Plan B is out. Plan C is a walk to Foggy Bottom in Georgetown, but from about a quarter mile away, we realize that it is just as packed, and there's no guarantee that it works. Plan Z, our "last resort under all circumstances," is to walk all the way back to Rosslyn, VA. That's right, an interstate stroll. The tax rate where we stop to buy coffee in Georgetown is different than the rate we buy groceries at. And we're off.

Please find attached a MapMyRun screen capture of the 5.25 mile route we took to and from the Inauguration. On foot.

where_is_brad_torti.jpg

And so it is that, 4 hours after making the decision to leave the Inauguration, and now very cold and very tired, we finally arrive back at the house in Georgetown, still numb from the bitter winter chill, the massive swarms of people, and the immensity of what we just experienced, to sit around the fireplace, hot cocoa in hand, shoes off, and heads back while a hot meal cooks in the kitchen and a new president sits in the Oval Office.

Today is a very good day.

More Notes From The Inauguration of Barack Obama

We took group pictures on the Capital Steps in the morning. Our group included Rep. Capps and about 30 folks from Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.

This evening 50 friends and community organizers from Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties met for dinner at La Tomate in Dupont Circle. Thanks to the management for a wonderful evening. Everyone had a chance to introduce themselves and tell the group what brought them to the inauguration. Most of us did take the opportunity to share our stories. Each story was heartfelt and special. The common thread was a chance for a new future and the excitement to be here to witness it.

To Jason Hodge, yes I am actually here in DC!

Happy Inauguration Day to all my friends, to the citizens of our nation and the world.

You are the change we have been waiting for! Enjoy!

JasonHodge_HBJ.JPG

In the comments of an earlier entry I asked Jason Hodge a few questions. Here is his response and night before the inauguration report:

A friend of mine recently asked me what the point of life was. I replied
that we give ourselves our own points. We create our own sense of purpose
and we should measure ourselves against that. Some of us will find a
purpose, a fine point to life and sharpen it like a weapon and wield it with
accuracy, power, and precision that leads to success. Others will go through
life with a dull point, a blunt object at best smashing their way through
the world hit and miss. Some people will have no point at all, They live
their lives like moss.

I've tried to live my life with a sharp point. Since I was a child I've
wanted to make a difference in people's lives -- to make the world a better
place. My degree, my associations, my energy has always been focused on
getting to the place where I can do the most good. But now I feel as though
I have reached a moment in my history that could either be a high water mark
or just the high tide that takes me out of the sheltered harbor and into the
battle for real. I believe the world is on the precipice of a turning and if
we aren't all involved and committed than we may fail to make it better.

Jason_hodge_subway.jpg

I believe that tomorrow we may have a leader who will get us involved again.
It will be a seminal event in America's history -- post hyper commercialism,
post rampant egoism, post partisan. People will be willing to help one
another again. We survive together.

That why I found my candidate in Feb 2007 over a year before the primary. I
had a long talk about the election with a good friend and he ended in "I
think he's the real deal" and at that point I did, too. I've followed,
preached, cajoled (broke a rule to never give personally) and donated. I
believe that he is the man who can lead us to a better age.

As for memorabilia, there was a guy with light-up Obama buttons attached all
around his trench coat. He looked like a weird trash alien. There are some
great shirts here and trinkets. I bought a paper doll Obama kit. It has cut
outs of all the families and the shirtless Obama has a perfect six pack.
Cracked me up. (Note from Brian: They are now called Barack hard abs.)
Jason_hodge_slate.jpg
The short version, because I'm dying for sleep, is we went to a live
recording of the slate gabfest at this historic synagogue. Afterwards we all
got to come down and chat and ask questions. It was a great, casual show and
everyone came out and answered our banal and insightful questions all the
same.

Brad,

Thanks for reporting for us. Leave a comment if I mixed up the photos.

Here is the latest report from Brad Torti:

In my time in Washington, D.C. I have honed the focus of my observations to the mass of people gathered. Among us, it seems, there are a few malcontents. Don't be alarmed, though. Almost ALL of those of us gathered in D.C. reacted to these elements similarly; we took their literature, we smiled politely, and we proceeded to the nearest recycling bin to dispose of it.

After two day's blissful congregating, we encountered the extremists, who arrived in full force today. Activist groups on the far ends of the political spectrum filled the streets, specifically the parade route, with banners, flyers, swag, and the second-rate propaganda that, while certainly representative of the dedication to the cause these groups have, invites a certain scrutiny that leaves you smirking or astonished. Since I couldn't/didn't/wouldn't concern myself with the actual names of these organizations, you'll just have to go along with fictionalized names I came up with after observing them.

NOTE: Excuse me for what I intend to be a good-natured ribbing of a few groups we ran into.

In front of the White House, where Barack Obama's parade viewing booth has been constructed, the Arrest-Bush-for-War-Crimes Group was posted and members were distributing literature admonishing Inauguration visitors to "hold Bush accountable" for the crimes of the Iraqi War. Hey, don't get me wrong, I was against the war before it was cool to be against the war, and frankly, I'm not going to spend a lot of energy on this one. I voted for the guy who was also against the war when it wasn't cool to be against the war, so I think I've done my part. Moving on.

Arrest_bush.JPG

The next prominent group was the Obama's-Change-Isn't-Radical-Enough-For-Us Front, whose members were competing for attention in front of the viewing stand. Honestly, I don't know how they could have hoped to - the Arrest-Bushes' mascot was pretty overwhelming. Plus, they had Death on their side. All these guys had was a stack of sunshine yellow half-sheets of literature outlining their gripes - but not including actual solutions. Second-rate protest, at its best.

big_bush_torti.JPG

The Union-Of-Culture-Theft-For-The-Purpose-Of-Flipping-Bush-The-Bird Protesters were just a few steps from the aforementioned group, and a number of supporters had thrown their shoes at, but not to or on, the gates some hundreds of yards from the White House. A demonstrator read off the names of the U.S. military servicemen and servicewomen who had been killed during fighting in the Middle East. It may have been Iraq only, or Afghanistan and Iraq, but when asked, the UoCTftPoFBtB couldn't tell us. I guess it wasn't important to them.

brad_torti_shoes.JPG

I should be clear, and to any reading these correspondences, heed this: I am all about free speech, and I personally feel that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been grossly mishandled. But there's something about these kinds of demonstrations that leave a foul taste in my mouth. Perhaps it is the underlying assumption that working WITH people is futile, or that those with moderate views are "cop-outs." Most irritating, however, was how it seemed these groups were attempting to pirate Obama's victory and use this historic time as a launch pad for their own ideas. It was however very encouraging to see that the vast majority of the crowds gathered largely ignored the extremist types. We're here to watch history be made - to take a breath and celebrate the wonder of a national accomplishment. Of course there are marches to be made, and there are issues to protest, but most of us recognize that it is through tempered and thoughtful unity that real change will be achieved.

I can't think of a clever segue to our last extremist organization, so I'll just juxtapose the next group against my last point. They don't need an introduction, I think.

Brad_torti_REPENT.JPG

If there's one group of people who have routinely found themselves outside of the political and social norm, it has always been the Doomspeakers. Posted in the background of an MSNBC broadcast booth, a few activists concerned themselves not with global politics, but our eternal souls. God bless them for trying. Of all the groups we saw today, the one that got the least respect (or more to the point, the most disrespect) were a few soldiering souls holding the perennially-celebrated "Doomsday/Salvation" posters.

Apparently Obama is so popular that the Son of God actually has to compete. It's a real shame, too, because I kind of like Jesus.

In my Bible, Isaiah 55:6-7 reads, "Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon." I'm no Biblical scholar, but I think something is been lost in the translation here, because not only do these folks think JESUS spoke in Isaiah, but it seems he used much less compassionate language.

Extremism exists on both sides of the political spectrum. I sincerely hope, and, having spent a lot of time on the ground with Americans from all over the land, honestly believe, that the unrealistic and zealous expectations of these small groups will not cloud, distort, or otherwise distract from the greatness the next 24 hours hold.

Man I hope these are real!

Jason, thanks for keeping these reports coming in. The photos are great too. Tell us about some of the funny memorabilia you have seen. Bought anything really cool or funny? I know you are there for professional, family, and historic reasons but when did you first start to support Barack Obama?

Here is the latest dispatch from Ventura County Firefighter Jason Hodge reporting from DC :

Last night was the first of the balls that I have been able lucky enough to cajole my way into. The California Democratic Bash was held at the Smithsonian National Air and Space museum. If you come to DC this is one of the three places you have to see. Its a surreal experience. Walking in is like walking into a archaeological dig of space exploration. The first thing you see hanging in the main lobby is the Wright brothers plane from Kitty Hawk just feet above your heads. The turnstiles you walk through are inches from John Glenn's actual space orbiter, sputnik hangs right that. To the right is Buzz Aldrin drinking a glass of Champaign. Yeah that's right. Buzz Aldrin. The first man to the moon was having a cocktail in the lobby right next to the lunar orbiter in which he and Neil Armstrong traveled 500,000 miles to the moon and back. Of course I had no choice but to wrangle my way into a conversation with a personal and national Hero. As we approached him we tried to conjure up a good conversation opener. Something profound, poignant, witty. Fitting of a national treasure like him.

"So did you guys really have to drink Tang?" My friend asked before I could get a word out.

"That stuff is horrible. I never could stand it" Aldrin replied. My friend later told me he wanted to ask "So where did you guys film the moon landing?" but he didn't want to get punched in the face. If you know anything about Buzz Aldrin than you know that this is a real possibility. Still, Mr. Aldrin was great we talked for about ten minutes and got a great photo for my scrapbook.

Buzz_aldrin.jpg ( Jason: Please identify these people from L to R again.)

Later we talked to Lois Capps, Debra Bowen, Barbara Boxer (who all looked smashing!) and a whole mess of Local Pols and activists. The atmosphere was about as perfect as you could imagine for this event. They did a good job of not overselling the event. No crowds or lines at all (except for the dreadful line to get a Cab). It was easy to get a drink and then take the champagne through space lab. Truly a magical event. It was great to talk to all the California Democrats who are really committed to working for a better future.

My date was my lovely sister who is extraordinarily talented at campaigning and managing Non-profits. She is currently working for the Sierra Club so we have lots of enviros that she hangs with and you know who they all know? Our own local state Senator Fran Pavley! When I talk about who we work with and mention Pavley they all light up and say "as in the Pavley Car standards?" See, one of California most accomplished assembly members is from our area.

Taxation without representation!

This morning I went down to the capitol to Elton Gallegly's office to pick up our inaugural tickets. The line in the Rayburn Building was a good hour and a half wait and wrapped all the way around the building. To top it off it started snowing 20 minutes into the wait. I had forgotten my gloves ( Hey I live in Ventura county, I had forgotten I owned gloves) so finally I called up to Gallegly's office to see if I could just pick them up from someone later. They asked which door I was coming in and said to wait a couple minutes. Well, a couple minutes later I hear "Jason, Lets go warm you up in the office" and next to me is Elton Gallegly who had come down to walk me in. I really can't show enough gratitude. Elton and Janice were as nice as ever and the staff was all exited about the festivities. Brian had asked me to ask if the Gallegly's would be in attendance in the morning and Elton said he has made every one since Reagan. They had even brought one of their grand children from Simi Valley to attend. Elton has previously told me that he is fairly impressed with the bulk of Obama's Cabinet picks and looks forward to working with the administration in these Challenging times.

Tonight its off to a live recording of slate magazine and then Dinner with Jay Kapitz (Happy Birthday Jay). I have to be honest though. I've been to three of the events that Jay is Blogging about and I've yet to see him. That and his "story" that he forgot his camera. I have a suspicion that Jay is in his warm house in Agoura and blogging all this in his Pajamas. Well see tonight.

Assembly Member Audra Strickland Preparing To Run For Secretary Of State Against Debra Bowen

Strickland_bowen.png

Assembly Member Audra Strickland has filed to start raising money to run for Secretary of State. She is termed out and I have heard rumors that she is thinking of running for another office, but the screen shot above shows she is strongly considering statewide office. Current incumbent Debra Bowen is up for re-election in 2010.

Click here for the filing page showing Audra Strickland's filing.

Debra Bowen is very popular with grassroots Democrats and she will be able to call upon them if she runs for Secretary of State or another office. Can we admit that term limits hasn't stopped career politicians? You should join Debra Bowen on Facebook, even if only to watch how the technology is being used by innovative politicians.

Click here for Debra Bowen's website.

Click here for a Wikipedia page on Audra Strickland. If you include additional information on Audra Strickland, her legislative record, and her past campaigns, send me an email so that I can post that it has been updated.

By the way: Did you see that Audra Strickland is preparing to run for Secretary of State on any blog or in any newspaper before my blog? Thanks for reading.

More Notes from the Inauguration of Barack Obama - Sunday

Today I was one of a half million who witnessed the opening ceremonies for the inauguration of Barack Obama. I planted myself in front of a big screen about 2/3 of a mile from the Lincoln Memorial - closer to the Washington Monument - to listen and watch musical acts, readings by entertainers and speeches by Joe Biden and Barack Obama. My attempts to join up with friends from Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties using cell phone was an utter failure. I did meet up with Larry DuBois - my friend from grammer school days - and his wife Karen. We spent a few minutes together until they decided to get some food and never returned. Did I mention there were half a million people there? Newly met, close- by companions were from DC and Dallas. I was surprised to hear that the DC resident was working on Inauguration day.

The event was amazing. Hope you caught it on HBO. Garth Brooks was very strong with American Pie, Shout and We Shall Be Free. Higher Ground with Stevie, Usher and Shakira was old school meets cool equals very cool. Bruce rose to the moment with choir in support. Last time I saw the Boss, he was opening for John Kerry in Miami the night before the election in 2004. Barack was the real star, of course. 6th time I have heard him live - always inspires. Nowhere on the planet that I would have rather been. At 38 degrees it felt like a heat wave after a shivering on Saturday.

Evening was spent at the California Democratic Gala at the Air and Space Museum. I met up with Belinda and Russell from Oak Park; Sherry, Tim, Vicky and their friends from Santa Barbara; Mary Kay, Kathy and Ingrid and spouses from Thousand Oaks and Santa Monica; and Larry and Karen again. Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Capps were among the elected California leaders with us. Good music, food and drink. Couldn't get a cab back to my room but hitched with a local. After some pub crawling and blogging I think I will sign off - 3AM - but who's counting. Until next time.

Jay.

( Jason Hodge is the really tall firefighter with the Hannah-Beth Jackson staff members. I took the photo at HBJ headquarters the day of the election.)

Here is the latest dispatch from Ventura County Firefighter and political activist Jason Hodge:

Brian,

Early to rise. Im not a morning person and im a poor traveler. If you know me you've known me to be late. Unfortunately airlines aren't as forgiving as friends. This morning however I was up at 6 and out the door with three hours to go. When I turned on the radio the first thing I heard was the Sam Cooke civil rights anthem "change is going to come". The sound of those words, and the hopeful voice which sang them sent a chill down my spine. I paused there in the driveway and couldn't help but smile. Change has come. Not the change that Obama promises, but the change that he represents. On Tuesday, the day after Martin Luther King day, an African-American will be sworn in as the 44th president of the United States and for millions of minority Americans change has irrevocably come.

The flight was pretty much the greatest flight of my life. I got an entire exit row to myself. Had a bag of beef jerky and time to contemplate. When we arrived in DC the airport was surprisingly smooth and empty. Traffic was mild and the streets were just a little busier than your typical night when congress is in session.

Right now Its about 7pm and we are getting ready to go to the California Democratic Bash. I'm a little sun burnt and tired from a busy day of standing and hiking 5 miles around the Mall but I have no complaints. I'm more in that mood of weary contentment sporting a Cheshire grin that should keep smiling all week.

This afternoon we made our way to the Lincoln memorial to watch the concert on the mall. The subway was a little packed but not bad. Everybody was polite and in a good mood and foot traffic flowed smoothly. At the mall we decided that we would find a place in the middle with a good view of the jumbotron. Less of a desire to watch the concert than wish to be a part of something thats is happening. Just stand and envelope ourselves in the history of the moment.

That said. WOW! What a show. Great performances. Friendly people. Nothing but love. When it was over I half expected Bono to say "my work is done is here" and float back to his alien mothership. I'm not sure what the attendance was but it was just a sea of people guesses ranged from 500000 to 750000. I've never been in a crowd nearly as large as this and the crazy thing was I heard no complaints. Not one person complaining about the crowd or the 38-degree weather. After the show we walked all the way back to the east of capitol in a mass of people and again it was a crowded amalgam of Americans with nothing but respect and courtesy for one another. If anyone ever doubts that we are great nation with great people than I can give you evidence to the contrary.

Here is the next update from Brad Torti:

Brian,

Here's more. You can have the whiteboard markers. I use the SmartBoard all the time now anyway. Use whichever pics you need, but get the one of the guy painting for sure.

BradTortiDC.jpg

Unsurprisingly, the entire DC metro area surges with Obamania. Local artists and boutique shops display everything from "Welcome President Obama" to "Yes We Did" signs and slogans. It is difficult to tell if the proprietors are excited about the election or the encroaching masses of potential customers. In any case, on Day Two of our stay here, the coming Inauguration festivities electrify the city, and it's hard not to get swept up in the excitement.

rosa.jpg

Over a year ago, we saw Obama speak at the Gibson Amphitheater at Universal Citywalk as he was running in the primary race against Clinton et al. The mood was then quite similar - people waiting, some less patiently than others, but all waiting anxiously for Obama's arrival. A fellow Southern Californian said, way back then, "He has to win. He just has to win!"

And we spent the next year working to ensure that he did. We phone banked, talked with friends, and got as many people fired up about Obama as we could.

It wasn't hard. Across the nation, once-conservative friends and family were being drawn to Obama's message - and after 8 years of the previous administration's decision making - were doing a whole lot more than hoping. From other grassroots-level involvement to generous donations to the campaign, people across the nation were working hard to help Obama realize our hopes for the nation. My cousin summed it up when I spoke with him over New Year's. He said, "I don't have a huge problem with [George W.] Bush. I mean, I voted for the guy twice. But when you meet Obama, when you stand in the room with him, it's like, 'Wow. He's the real thing. He's not just saying what people want to hear. He stands for what he believes.'"

It must be true, because here we are. Thickly layered, bundling against the cold, and from all corners of the country, more people than I can fit in the frame of my camera are piling into the open spaces around the Reflecting Pool in the National Mall.

tn-3.jpg

Ashley, our dear friend and local tour guide, made an interesting remark. Waiting for the "We Are One Inaugural Concert," she said, "I don't see any kind of negativity here. I was expecting at least one crazy person somewhere spouting about the end of the world or something. The wrongest thing here is the price of the merchandise!" And it's true. "You know how rare it is to find this many people who agree? We could say the sky was blue and not this many people would agree," she continued. "We all agree on [this] one thing."

The concert ends up being great fun, even from the great distance we end up watching from. I meet many people, total strangers, from every part of the country, and all have interesting stories to tell. Many of the folks around are with a group called "The Close-Up Academy" which is comprised mainly of high school students from around the country. Universally, it seems they are a little overwhelmed but very excited. I asked a young man from the San Jose area how he felt about being in Washington D.C. and he stared off for a moment and said, "It's cool. Really cool," which is altogether appropriate; it is still difficult to put into words the immensity of these days. We also ran into Andrew Purchin, a California-based artist, who took up his easel and was working on painting his view of the concert - which was several hundred yards from the Washington Monument.

BradTortiPainting.jpg

There might be half a million people at this concert, and while Denzel Washington, Bruce Springsteen, Queen Latifa, and Tom Hanks might be headliners the rest of the time, the stars today are Barack Obama and Joe Biden, both of whom showed up to enjoy the concert with the rest of us.

Jason Hodge is a leader in the union representing Ventura County Firefighters and he is a self-described political junkie. His union is very popular with voters and they support candidates from both political parties. But this week Jason Hodge is celebrating the inauguration of Barack Obama and he will be updating us by email.

Here is his first post:

Brian,

You have inspired me! I'm trying to take lots of photos and do two posts daily.

Wow, I cant believe its actually here. I've been a volunteer, activist, and political junky for my entire life. I have had the good fortune to travel and feed those addictions pretty frequently but nothing compares with this upcoming week. I can not overstate the excitement I have for this historic inauguration. I feel like a Dallas Cowboys fan who gets 50 yardline tickets to the superbowl and then finds out he is sitting between Tom Landry's wife and Emmit Smith. It's just that cool.

So for those keeping score here is my schedule. Ill be updating frequently and trying to send back photos as they become available. I've used what little charm, karma, and favors that I have to get here so I hope I can share you along this historic journey with me.

Sun: Concert at the Lincoln Memorial
California Democratic Ball at the Smithsonian air and Space museum

Mon: Pick up Inaugural tickets at Congressional Offices. Live Slate Gabfest at historic Synagogue. Dinner with Ventura and Santa Barbara activists

Tues : Inauguration!!!
Western Inaugural Ball

I do need start by thanking some friends who have help made all this happen. The Honorable Elton Gallegly, Ventura county professional firefighters, VCPFA president Chris Mahone, California professional Firefighters and their awesome staff, Marilynn and Leo Valenzuela of the California Labor Federation, the California Democratic Party, Jay Kapitz, Brian Dennert and all my friends who put up my dragging them to parades, rallies phone banks, dinners and street corners for activities.

Here is his update:

Brian

Some DC inauguration notes, though not very noteworthy yet.

Forgot my camera cable so no pics. Remembered my thermals and other cold weather gear - very good thing. I was planning on staying in Virginia and taking Metro in and out of DC - even rented bike for inauguration day - but at the last minute scored an inexpensive room in a historic 1890s home two blocks from the Capitol. This will save many hours!

First full day was today - spent it checking out logistics and getting used to the weather. I walked from one end of the Mall to the other, starting at the Capitol and finishing up at the Lincoln Memorial with a side trek to the White House.

The Capitol was pretty well setup for the swearing in ceremony with last minute tweaking of big screens and sound systems - it was strange seeing it so empty and contemplating the scene on Tuesday with 2 million projected, Very emotional for me to think this is really going to happen . At the other end, near the Lincoln Memorial, the sounds checks were ongoing for the free Sunday Welcome Concert with musical acts including Beyonce, MJ. Blige, Bono, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, John Legend, Usher, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, will.i.am, and Stevie Wonder.

Today was 25 degrees and as cold as I have been. My layers held up well - especially my first ever winter coat - way to go Burlington Coat Factory. Sunday is projected at balmy 39 degrees - why does that make me so happy?

I start to hook up with my fellow VC and SB county travelers tomorrow. There are about 50 of us here and we are meeting for a dinner I organized on Monday night. Some elected officials and members of VC County Star press will be there.

The folks here are having a great time so far. Some of our VC County group members were able to attend Senate sessions and the rest of us have done the museums, monuments, tours and parties.

I got a last minute ticket to the Western Ball on Tuesday night but alas no tuxedo. Never fear - black jeans, white shirt, dark jacket and a borrowed bow tie will do the trick.

Busy and historic days ahead. Till next time.

Jay

My friend Brad Torti is an ELD English teacher, Democratic Party activist, and a genuinely down to earth guy. I have known him from before the campaign but together this cycle we attended a few events and made phone calls to swing states.

He and his wife left Friday night to go to DC for the inauguration and he will be writing brief updates while they are there. Brad, take an obscene amount of photos. I want to see the throng of people. Take photos of the street vendors, people with wacky hats, and the lines to move around. Maybe a photo of you two holding a Barack Obama sign in front of the Lincoln Memorial?

Here is the first update from Brad Torti:

Dennert -

It appears that there are two masses assembling in Washington, D.C. this weekend. The first, and by a wide margin the smaller, are handfuls of college students and Democratic Party loyals pouring into the Capitol with itineraries authored by the Obama Campaign Team. They'll stay in hotels, attend various meetings, and apparently have their meals comped. On the connecting flight from Memphis to Reagan Airport, a row of these individuals sat behind us, acquainting themselves with each other, some more eagerly than others, but all connected by a singular thread.

We are in the other group: a thronging mass, rumored to number in the millions, some without reservations, many without admission tickets, and most without obvious connections to the larger group.

Camped out against a window in the back of the A320 from Memphis, I initially lamented my plight. Why didn't I have the foresight to book reservations with the Obama organization? Where is my officially-licensed economy hoodie? Where are my built-in friends and where is my itinerary? Why isn't someone else making sure I will have a good time?

Once it became clear that some people had buses and trams waiting for them off the plane, I got to envying Them - you know, Those People with Privileges. But now that I think about it, great privilege often comes with great stress, so in the end, a privilege is little more than someone else's regular day. And maybe there is no Them - since they are like us. Maybe there is only Us.

Well, Dennert ( Note from Brian: Brad you keep calling me Dennert and the dry erase markers in your room will "disappear"), I can't speak for the whole, but as for myself, I've been having a great time since November. I have millions of friends across this great nation, and while I didn't book fare with the Obama Team, I've got an itinerary just the same. Best of all, I'm connected to virtually every visitor to D.C. by a even greater bond - I voted for Barack Obama, and I have come to watch history be made. And when the cheers go up around the city, and when they echo across the nation, I will be in the middle of it, I will be part of it.

And as far as that officially-licensed econo-hoodie goes - it's 28 degrees outside; I'll stick to my winter parka.

Last week David Atkins ( blogger on Dailykos.com and Venturacountydemocrats.com ) and Mike Gibson ( Ventura County Republican activist ) debated if America is a center right nation.

Thanks to both of you for an intellectual debate that will help set the tone for future Thursday Night events. I think you both did great. I plan to make Thursday Night debates or interviews a semi-regular event.

Next week the topic is education innovation, reform, charter schools, and budget cuts. I have a respected conservative but I am looking for another person to be in the debate.

Click here to read their debate.

To say thanks I am posting a link to David Atkin's latest entry on Dailykos.com that has so many people recommending it that he is on the front page again with almost 500 comments.

Click on continue reading to see an excerpt from his recent entry, including comments from MSNBC host Keith Olbermann!

Mike, let me know what cause you would like me to plug as a way of saying thank you.

The debate was covered on a few other blogs including by Tyler Suchman, of the Ojaipost.com and of course David Atkin's Dailykos diary.

David Atkin's Dailykos.com diary entry on the subject made the front page. He also ran a poll that showed him winning overwhelmingly, if the voters only include Dailykos.com readers, which obviously isn't anything near a scientific poll.

http://thereisnospoon.dailykos.com/.png

I read through some of the comments and this one stands out:

Its nice hearing an actual debate. The vice presidential debates and even presidential debates felt shallow. Like a constant spouting of platitudes. You and Gibson actually addressed each other's points. Personally I think Gibson did an alright job, but as you stated, his arguments would've been stronger with statistics and he seemed to be more on the defense than the offense (also he did lose the point as you suggested halfway through).

Again, thanks to David Atkins and Mike Gibson for kicking off a new feature with class. Who do I think won? My readers and I for the entertainment and insight you two provided.

Tom Campbell on the budget

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Former Member of Congress Tom Campbell is running for governor as a Republican with libertarian leanings. He supports marriage equality and he has been a critic of spending both at the federal and state level for many years. If you liked Tom McClintock's economic message but didn't like his far right social positions than Campbell might be a good choice for you.

Unfortunately for him he is running against at least one billionaire that can self fund a campaign. But will his message be compelling enough to attract grassroots support?

State Assembly Member Audra Strickland Endoreses Jeff Gorell To Replace Her

Jeff_gorell.jpg

Jeff Gorell has announced that State Assembly Member Audra Strickland has endorsed him for the 2010 election to replace her in the state assembly. With his early endorsements, money, and organization I expect he has successfully cleared the primary field.

I have been hearing rumors that Audra Strickland is thinking of running for the County Board of Supervisors but I am unclear which seat she is looking at. I have heard she was thinking of running against Linda Parks, but I doubt she would run against a popular incumbent. I have also heard that Peter Foy is thinking of running for State Insurance Commissioner now that Steve Poizner ( Will this connection to this politician hurt his chances at all? ) is running for governor.

All of this adds up to a game of musical chairs. Term limits has created more open seats, which somewhat levels the playing field , but it has not created the class of citizen-legislator that we were promised. Term limits have made many problems worse. We have the same people planning on running for another seat instead of doing their jobs. Why should a candidate compromise in the legislature if they need to win in a party primary to keep going in their career? Term limits appeals to the people that demand a hard line from their candidates.

Before Christmas I spoke to Jeff Gorell's graduate class in public advocacy at CLU. I came away more impressed with his demeanor, intelligence, and his dedication to teaching. Jeff has worked as a lobbyist, in PR and has ran for office before so he does have experience in the field. In addition he is a lawyer and served in the military.

Jeff, it was great talking to your class and thank you for inviting me. I am glad as a Democrat I don't live in the 38th district which makes it so I don't have to make a tough choice to vote for you or your opponent.

Cowboy Strickland to Raise Money for Young Republicans

( Thanks to Mike Chandler for the photoshop. Check out his blog by clicking here. His blog covers many Simi Valley issues in detail.)

The Santa Barbara Republican Party is throwing a country western themed party to raise money for their Young Republicans.

Guests include actor Christopher Mitchum, the Steve Woods Country Western Band, and newly elected State Senator Tony Strickland.

There is going to be drinks, music and an auction for a "beaver Ronald Reagan Stetson".

The best line:

"Our Saddle Up Shindig is pure Reagan Country and was inspired by the late President's optimistic, non elitist, pro America style," commented Heather Bryden, Event Co-Chair. "Our country could use more of that."

Which president didn't have a pro-america style? Which president had an elitist style? That line seems straight out of a Sarah Palin speech.

Proposed Camarillo Prison Hospital on KFI AM 640

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

( What makes more sense? The lyrics to this song or building nicer prisons than schools?)

On my way home from work around 5PM I was listening to Jon and Ken on KFI AM 640 talking about a recent article on the proposal to build prison hospitals including a new facility in Camarillo.

There are a few stunning quotes from the article that will prove to be a major PR challenge for those in favor of building the prison hospitals.

Check these quotes from the article describing some preliminary plans:

-- Workout rooms to "promote wellness," featuring exercise machines and space for "therapeutic activities such as aerobics, yoga, (and) group exercise." Plus handball courts.

-- Outdoor courtyards "where patients will be encouraged to participate in recreational therapy programs such as horticulture."

-- Gymnasiums with a basketball court and a music room, a crafts room, game room and therapy kitchen.

-- Outdoor running tracks.

Looks like the prisoners are going to have better facilities than most public schools!

Is there any public official in Ventura County in favor of the proposal? Do you know anyone in favor of it in your private life?

Rep. Gallegly @ The Hat in Simi Valley

( Photo by Karen Quincy Loberg for the Ventura County Star.)

I have long maintained that Rep. Elton Gallegly really is from Ventura County, unlike other politicians that are looking to get out of here when they get elected.

In the past I have seen him at Applebee's, Regal Cinema, Home Depot, and a week ago I spotted him at The Hat eating lunch.

Click here for past Rep. Gallegly in public sightings.

Although I am glad to see he maintains his deep roots to out community I do think he should hold more town hall style forums to take questions directly from the community. No, I don't mean debates, which I understand he isn't interested in doing, but town hall forums where people can show up and ask him questions in person.

Did I ask him at The Hat why he rarely holds announced public events? No, he was eating lunch with some family members ( I believe ) and it didn't seem like the right time.

But it is the right time for him to be holding public forums.

Call his office and ask them when the next time he will be taking questions at a free public event.

Do you remember the controversy over Harry Potter books in Ventura County Schools? The issue for some conservative parents was sorcery. You have to read the article for some outlandish quotes.

Well, it isn't nearly as exciting but a former Simi Valley School Board Member was reading the Ventura County Star and noticed that a club for Republican women donated books in honor of First Lady Laura Bush's efforts to promote literacy. He looked up a review of the book on Amazon.com and wasn't pleased with the results.

I like libraries to be appealing to many different students and to hold a wide variety of views. I don't teach elementary school and I am not sure what the guidelines for books are at that level.

I don't like to comment on books that I haven't read and I won't be fitting this book into my schedule anytime soon so I will reserve most of my comments to myself.

But I will say that a way to see if this argument is moot is to find out how many kids checked out the book. Remember that card in the front of books? If kids aren't interested enough to check out the book then the issue seems rather small.

UPDATE:

Here is the purpose of the book according to the author:

"The book is designed to educate young girls about being a Republican Woman and to help recruit the next generation of of NFRW members".

Stephen, if that doesn't would you consider this book a fair compromise?

In his guest blog entry you will see the school district was responsive and had a clear policy to deal with the issue.

County Supervisors To Discuss Open Space Law

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

SOARbanner.gif

I like when elected officials hold public forums where voters can ask questions not filtered by the media and the average voter can attend. Events held in the middle of a work day at a Country Club with an admission charge do not count.

Jay Kapitz, a Barack Obama volunteer and a community activist, sent me an email with information on the upcoming community forum to discuss the landmark open space law known as SOAR.

Are you going to go? Anyone know if it is going to be televised? If it is, please post it on youtube for us.

Here is the email from Jay Kapitz:

Dear Friends:

You are invited to a meeting on Saturday, January 31, 2009, 10 AM to Noon, at the Oak Park Community Center regarding protecting the open space in Oak Park, the Conejo Valley and all of Ventura County.

Ventura County Supervisors Linda Parks and Steve Bennett will discuss the law known as SOAR -Save Open-Space and Agricultural Resources."

Currently the SOAR law is set to expire in less than 12 years. It protects us against development of the hillsides around Oak Park, Thousand Oaks and surrounding areas. There is currently a deed restriction prohibiting development around Oak Park by the Rancho Simi Park District, which owns the open space. This deed restriction will expire in a few years and that is a huge reason that SOAR is so important to anyone living in Oak Park. Similar issues are in play for Thousands Oaks.

Please attend this meeting. Come find out more about SOAR and how we can protect these and other open space areas that could be at risk for development.

Hope to see you there.

Tony Strickland On The Budget

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

StateSenateTonyStrickland.jpg

State Senator Tony Strickland recently had an editorial in The Star discussing his views on the budget.

Here are a couple of quotes that stand out to me:
State Senator Tony Strickland:
"Instead, it is time for Democrats and Republicans to work together to solve the situation"

But how is Tony Strickland going to do that when his caucus already signed a pledge to not raise any taxes? I understand State Senator Tony Strickland and many, many, others feel that no taxes should be raised to fix the state budget. But taking a firm stand and compromising to pass a new budget seem to be mutually exclusive here.

If Democrats were pledging to only raise taxes and not cut any spending I would point out that they weren't open to compromising either.

I'd appreciate it more if the politicians that aren't willing to compromise on principle would just say it instead of blaming the other side for not agreeing with their positions.

Looking over the article I would guess State Senator Tony Strickland would say he is unwilling to compromise on raising any taxes but he is willing to compromise on diverting funds from specific accounts created by voters passing propositions.

State Senator Tony Strickland:This is why I am co-authoring legislation to bring more accountability to state spending by requiring the state auditor to conduct performance audits on government programs.

Sounds good, but the chances the Democratic majority are going to pass legislation by a member of the minority who doesn't compromise with them on their bills seems to be rather minimal. If it was a good idea they supported I'd expect the majority to introduce their own legislation that does the same thing.

I'd expect pretty much every bill proposed by State Senator Tony Strickland of substance to be defeated unless he is willing to compromise on some other issues. Is there a Democratic co-sponsor? If not, what's even the point?

State Senator Tony Strickland:
"...We built upon cost-saving ideas first proposed by Democrats, Republicans, the governor and even the nonpartisan legislative analyst. We also looked at places where tax dollars are sitting idly in bank accounts and came up with a plan to have voters choose to redirect those funds for other important priorities."

This sounds more promising. At least this mentions areas where the parties can reach a consensus. But if it has to be put up to a vote by the electorate, when would that happen? June? This paragraph actually has some solutions in it that might work as a component of a budget fix.

Ventura County Star reporter Timm Herdt had a recent blog post that State Senator Tony Strickland is promising to make good on his campaign promises of pushing for green energy. Click here for the blog post.

Ventura County Board of Education Cancels Contracts w/ Lobbyists

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

( Maybe we can put together a volunteer lobbying force using former candidates from both parties? Just a thought.)

Do you remember when Arnold Schwarzenegger said he wanted to blow up the boxes and he pushed to eliminate county boards of education?

Anyways, the Ventura County Board of Education voted to end the contracts for lobbyists to work with the state legislature and the US Congress.

There goes the proposed earmark to construct a building for Ventura County students on a Christian High School campus in Indiana. Who was supposed to put the earmarks into the budget? Rep. Elton Gallegly or Rep. Lois Capps? Some other representative?

I never did understand why the board needed lobbyists to begin with. I am sure if they were worthy projects some of our local representatives and their staff would have been willing to help.

If there really was a need for these contracts the incumbents did a poor job educating the public of the value for the expenditure.

Sen. John Burton for California Democratic Party Chair

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

BurtonPressPhoto-Large.jpg

Laura Winchester, a friend of mine and local Democratic activist, is supporting John Burton for Chair of the Democratic Party of California. My first reaction was that we needed an outsider for this position, but I always listen when Laura has a strong opinion on a subject. She has been right more than I care to acknowledge here.

Anyways, here is her guest post:

Sen. John Burton for California Democratic Party Chair

As you may know, the Democratic Party is holding its Assembly District Delegate elections this weekend. In each of the 80 AD's, 12 people (6 men and 6 women) will be elected to represent their District at the annual State Convention for the next 2 years. As expected, interest is higher than usual after the exciting Presidential election.

Locally, in AD35 there are 26 people competing for these positions, in AD37 there are 22, in AD38 there are 19, and in AD 41, there are 28. It's exciting to see not only longtime activists running, but new people who got involved in the Obama campaign, and are now looking to stay involved .

One thing you can expect to see at each caucus is a strong presence from the John Burton campaign, looking to court delegates and activists, and20elect as many Burton supporters as possible.

Current Chair Art Torres is retiring in April, and Burton declared his candidacy late last year. He quickly garnered the endorsements of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Sen. Barbara Boxer, State Senate Pro-Tem Darryl Steinberg, and all Ventura County Democrat electeds, including Rep. Lois Capps, Sen. Fran Pavley, Hon. Pedro Nava, Hon. Julia Brownley and State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jack O'Connell. Equally strong has been his support from rank and file Democrats at the local level.

LA County Central Committee Chair Eric Bauman had declared his candidacy for the Chair position early in 2008, but a few weeks ago he bowed out, and is now running for Vice Chair instead. That leaves current Vice Chair, Alex Rooker, as the only other candidate in the race and Sen. Burton as the overwhelming favorite.

A legendary figure in California politics, Senator Burton has over 40 years of public service, including multiple terms in Congress, the State Assembly, and State Senate, where he served as Pro-Tem from 1998 until retiring in 2 004.

While some activists might question the ability of a powerful insider and longtime politician to bring change to the party, one only need look at his record to know that fear is unfounded. He was a Progressive before it was cool, always on the cutting edge. But most importantly for a party leader, he knows how to win elections. His leadership and fundraising ability is unquestioned. It takes money to win elections, as well as powerful strategy, discipline and organization. I have no doubt that Sen. Burton will be able to raise the kind of money and attract the talent, both professional and volunteer, that we will need to compete and protect the seats that will become more competitive after Prop. 11 is implemented.

Posted on his website, www.burton2009.com, is a powerful message and plan that addresses his vision for the future of the Party. He makes specific reference to two of our districts here in Ventura County , and recognizes the difficulty of competing in red districts. This is good news for us and all "red zones" in California . Take a few moments and read his ideas and plan for leading the CDP. Once you do, I'm confident that you will be excit ed and energized about supporting Sen. Burton, and will join the hundreds of Democrats that have already committed to help elect him as our new Party Chair.

UPDATE: Laura, thanks for writing this guest blog entry. I checked out the Google News search results and you were correct, this entry was the number one result for John Burton!

Welcome to the first in a series of Thursday Night Debates.

Tonight we have Mike Gibson (R) and David Atkins (D) debating if America is a center right nation.

Click on continue reading for the biographies and to read the debate.

The debate is scheduled to start at 7:45 as Mike Gibson had a late commitment that is slowing him down.

The format and rules are simple. Each participant will post an opening comment of a few paragraphs at most and then they will take turns responding to each other's comments and questions. Personal attacks, foul language, and posting in Latin w/o a translation are all prohibited.

The debate will end at 8:45 PM and then this entry will be locked from further comments.

There will be other entries to suggest future topics, nominate participants, and to give feedback to the quality of arguments put forth.

But on this entry the only two people posting besides me will be Mike Gibson and David Atkins.

David will be posting 1st starting at 7:45 PM and then it will be Mike Gibson's turn.

Thursday Night Debates: Suggest Some Topics

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

What debates would you like to see prominent community members, activists, bloggers, campaign staff, elected officials, or other people locally debate?

My preference would be for issues that are local or have a local connection.

Here are some of my ideas:

1. Which party better represents the Decline to State (DTS) voters of Ventura County?

2. Which city is the most innovative, best run, or the most transparent in Ventura County?

3. What city has done the best in responding to growth?

4. Should party central committees get involved in nonpartisan races?

5. Which school district has been the most innovative in tough budget times?

Leave your other suggestions as a comment.

If you would like to participate in any of these, or other topics, send me an email.

Campaign for the 2010 Nomination for Governor Begins

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The new year has just started but the campaign for the nominations of their party to be governor have already begun. I don't know who I will eventually vote for but I am trying to keep an open mind. I want a candidate that has serious solutions for our budget. A candidate that strongly supports public schools ( including charter schools ) but has ideas on how to reform education, and is in favor of gay rights.

I most often vote for Democratic candidates for statewide offices, but I am willing to wait to see more arguments put forth by the campaigns. On the Democratic side I don't know who I will support in the primaries.

Gavin Newsom

( At least conservatives and the Mayor Newsom can complain over media coverage together.)

I think Gavin Newsom could be turned into a single issue candidate, whether he likes it or not, even though the door's wide open now for his party's nomination. Time will tell if he is able to expand the issues he is known for.

Jerry Brown

E_brownjr.jpg

Jerry Brown has supported innovative ideas in the past including unique charter schools and environmental protection plans. He has the year's of public service that can help or could lead to a few quotes being played over and over. As a younger voter I don't think only of his previous terms of governor when his name is brought up, but instead to his run for the presidency in 1992, his time as mayor of Oakland, and his current office of Attorney General. I know my older Republican friends have a visceral reaction to him but what do the rest of you think? Check out his website and let me know.

It shouldn't matter in voting, but I don't care much for his website. The organizing tools are great but the color scheme and layout seem archaic. I am sure if he gets closer to the nomination there will be a complete revision but it seems dated as of now. By the way, I know he is constitutionally allowed to run again but it does seem odd, no?

Jerry Brown also left the Democratic Party to become DTS, which I don't think will matter much except to build the case he is a different type of politician.

The danger in supporting Jerry Brown is having to defend a decades long record that includes so much controversy. The same is true for most politicians that have been in public service for a few generations.

John Garamendi

CaroleLutnessAndJohnGaramendi.jpg
( John Garamendi with former State Assembly candidate Carole Lutness. Makes me wonder how much the other candidates have worked to support Democratic candidates across California.)

John Garamendi is a work horse candidate in this election. He has been involved in state politics since he was elected to the state assembly in 1974. I expect he has the early lead for the nomination because of his support for Democratic candidates, his decent name ID ( without caricatures like Jerry Brown has from his time as governor), and the fact his website already offers free campaign material.

Seriously, campaign material already being sent out for free? I just took down my No on Proposition 8 sign and my Barack Obama signs. My magnetic bumper stickers supporting Barack Obama came off in November. Are people really going to be putting up stuff already? I guess so and I am impressed, although fatigued, that people are campaigning this early.

Jack O'Connell

( Jack O'Conell's Back to School message.)

Jack O'Conell is mentioned as a potential candidate by many people but his only official website I found is from his 2006 re-election campaign for Superintendent of Public Instruction. I have met Jack O'Conell before and he comes across as very down to earth. He is goofy and serious at the same time. He could find support because of his appearance in an ad against Proposition 8, but it wouldn't be the center of his public persona for voters.

With education being the largest expenditure in the state budget, his background could help propel him past his other candidates. But is he really going to run?

Steve Poizner

poizner.jpg

Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner is getting many endorsements from elected Republican leaders for the 2010 Republican nomination for governor. I don't know many of his positions and I don't know ideologically what type of Republican he is exactly. His tenure as Insurance Commissioner hasn't drawn much public scrutiny , which is normally a compliment. He also won state wide, which is something few Republicans can claim.

He already has a campaign staff, website, Facebook account, and regular email updates going out. His staff is quick too. I asked them about a fact they used on his website and I had an answer in a few hours. Thanks!

I am interested to see if he will position himself as the conservative candidate and align himself with many of their slogans, consultants, and positions.

He said he opposes same sex marriage but that he is pro-choice. I find that an odd mix. Are any of you pro-choice but against marriage equality?

Click on continue reading for a recent email he has sent out.

Tom Campbell

Tom_Campbell.jpg

Tom Campbell has been a long time favorite of libertarian Republicans in California. He has liberal social positions and has the opportunity to appeal to the Ron Paul supporters in California.

Campbell served in the State Senate and the US House of Representatives but has been out of elected office for a few years. His support for the impeachment of Bill Clinton could rally Democrats against him.

He has consistently challenged and critiqued the right wing of his party. That makes me like him more, at least in the primaries.

Click here for his argument against Proposition 8 published on Reason Magazine's website.

Meg Whitman

( Meg Whitman helping raise money for Mitt Romney.)

She doesn't have a website up but she supported Mitt Romney, then flipped to John McCain, and she was in Support of Proposition 8. Steve Schmidt of the McCain campaign is working for her as she prepares to run for governor.

Click here for an article that explains in detail why Republican primary voters might or might not support her.

Because she didn't vote in a bunch of elections, she only recently became a Republican, and she has given large amounts of money to Democrats will give openings to her Republican Party primary candidates.

She is worth over a billion dollars ( but that was calculated before the economic slowdown) and would be able to self fund her campaign. If someone worth a billion dollars asks you for a donation would you be less likely to give them money?
