Ventura County Supervisor Peter Foy Campaigning Statewide

I stumbled across the ad above while looking at FlashReport.org, a California Republican blog and news summary page.

Have you heard of the California chapter of this group that Peter Foy is promoting?

From what I gather they are a small government, anti-tax, anti-regulation, and human caused global warming denying group. I have seen a few press releases and events where they bring an inflatable ATM ( that stands for Already Taxes to the Max) and argue that the state budget should not be fixed with higher taxes.

Here is a video of Peter Foy at an ATM event:

I would think this points to Peter Foy planning to run for a higher office (Rumor is he is thinking of running for Insurance Commissioner in 2010) and advocating for conservative causes could help raise his profile and make more contacts statewide.

Ventura County Supervisor Peter Foy has been a long time supporter of conservative candidates and causes. Back in 1996 he supported far right candidate Alan Keyes in the Republican primary. If Peter Foy does run for statewide office I expect his past support for Alan Keyes will be a powerful criticism that could stop his ability to win over moderate voters. Is 1996 too distant to use in a campaign?

Alan Keyes sued to stop President Barack Obama from taking the office because of the conspiracy theory that Barack Obama wasn't born in America.

Alan Keyes said that Hillary Clinton moving to New York to run for the vacant senate seat endangered federalism. A few years later he moved to Illinois to run against Barack Obama to protect federalism.

Alan Keyes wants to eliminate the right to vote directly for senators and restore this function to the state legislatures.

Alan Keyes said that it is selfish hedonism to be gay and when the interviewer asked if the daughter of Vice President Cheney fit that description he said "Of course she is. That goes by definition."

Alan Keyes dropped out of the Republican Party in 2008 after failing to get almost any attention in the primaries ( did you remember he ran?) then tried to get the nomination of the Constitution Party, then after he failed to get their nomination he ran as an independent candidate. The platform of the Constitution Party doesn't appeal to the electorate of California.

I am sure we have all cast a vote here of there for a candidate we would prefer not to have linked to us but the difference is Peter Foy was a leader trying to get Alan Keyes elected. A fair defense I would expect Peter Foy to claim is that most of the wackiest things Alan Keyes has said happened after Peter Foy supported him.

I think Peter Foy has done a decent and effective job representing Simi Valley but his politics don't seem like a match for California. But would that be ignored in a campaign for Insurance Commissioner?

If Peter Foy runs for Insurance Commissioner and Audra Strickland continues to run for Secretary of State Ventura County elected officials might start getting more attention. Anyone remember that last Ventura County politician to get elected statewide? Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell's state senate district included Santa Barbara and Ventura County but he is from Santa Barbara.

So, what do you say? Do you want Supervisor Foy to run for Insurance Commissioner? I would support him if his platform focused on the job of Insurance Commissioner, if I agreed with his ideas for the office, and if he wasn't going to use the position to advocate for far right causes and candidates. The ATM stuff doesn't surprise me but some of the other issues do. Peter, in retrospect does Alan Keyes represent your world view?

What do you think? Is Peter Foy too conservative for a bland, but important, job like Insurance Commissioner?

( Back when Peter Foy ran for supervisor against Judy Mikels and Jim Dantona he put as his ballot designation farmer/businessman. His website also showed him working his ranch land. Somehow pictures of him running his insurance firm weren't as prominent. Anyways, thanks to Brian Mack for creating this photoshop for me.)

( This video from Peter Foy's group discusses the Bridge to Nowhere that Sarah Palin supported before she didn't turned against it.)

Here is a really old press release from Peter Foy on behalf of Alan Keyes speaking against basic workplace protections for gay people:

ALAN KEYES SPEAKS OUT AGAINST INITIATIVE 677

Washington, D.C., Oct. 31 -Former U.N. Ambassador and 1996 Republican presidential candidate Dr. Alan Keyes today denounced Initiative 677, on the ballot in Washington state next Tuesday. The measure is described by supporters as an extension of civil rights protections to homosexuals in the workplace. Keyes rejected this description as misleading, and called the initiative itself "dangerous to self-government."

It is wrong to treat sexual orientation like race, in terms of civil rights protections, Keyes said. "Race is a condition that is beyond the individual's control, while sexual orientation involves behavior. If we equate sexual orientation and race, we are saying that sexual behavior is beyond the individual's control and moral will. We cannot embrace such an understanding of civil rights without denying the human moral capacity, and with it the fitness of human beings for life in a free society."

The attempt to prohibit employers from making any employment-related decisions in light of the sexual behavior of employees has nothing to do with protecting civil rights, Keyes pointed out. Rather, it is another step in the unfolding agenda of coercion of the American conscience. "The real purpose of Initiative 677 is to use government power, under cover of a spurious civil rights claim, to impose views that contravene religious conscience and prevent the citizens of Washington State from exercising important moral judgments in their free choice of associations."

Keyes noted that, at a time when the foundations of political liberty in America are threatened by a profound moral crisis, sound public policy must seek to strengthen the confidence of all Americans in their own capacity to make the sound moral judgments that make mature self-government possible. Rather than encourage such discretion, he said, Initiative 677 seeks preemptively to suppress the moral judgments that all citizens must make as they seek to build families, businesses, and lives according to their best judgment of the appropriate standards of behavior that will make the pursuit of true happiness possible.

Keyes urged the citizens of Washington to protect the true civil right--the right to make our own moral judgments free from government coercion--and to reject Initiative 677.

Keyes, who is widely credited for refocusing the debate on moral and social issues during the 1996 primary season, currently hosts a nationally syndicated daily radio program, The Alan Keyes Show: America's Wake Up Call. The program is simulcast on NET/Political News Talk Television.

The fact that no one cared enough to post as of February 3rd at 5:45pm could mean that no one cares about Supervisor Foy.... Think we can close these discussions down - Foy's going nowhere.

From what I've been reading lately, he's not the only global warmer denier out there.

Peter Foy is nothing but a right wing extremist nut job! Did Foy ever pay all those back taxes and defaults he owed? Foy should resign, he has been a lousy Supervisor so far.

I heard that Fraudra's supposed run for SOS is a front for campaign money laundering.

She plans to raise money statewide and then actually run for County Supervisor, which Foy has promised to her. She will give her SOS-candidate controlled committee funds that she raises to the VCRCC and they in turn will funnel the money to pay for her campaign. That is how she will get around the FPPC that states you can not transfer funds from a state to a county candidate controlled committee.

She will remake herself and most likely have a ballot designation of Teacher to morphe to a more likeable candidate profile. She will call herself an Independent and talk about renewable energy alot, the economy and promise no new taxes, blah, blah, blah.

Most likely the voters will fall for it because all the elected's will endorse her out of fear. No one serious will run against her because of the Strickland's ability to raise money.

With the economy the way it is, it will be very difficult to find someone who is able to self finance a campaign. The seat is ripe to be bought; that is how campaigns are run in East County Supervisor Races.

It's the Strickland campaign anthem; Same song different verse.

The Republicans raise more money because they are willing to do anything to get it. I am sure if the Democrats wanting to take contributions from meth addicts treasonous Republican crooks they would have more money too

The intelligent voters in the East County know the Republicans are crooks. They just feel they are "their crooks". The East County knows their skill in voting might have destroyed our Nation. They just care more about their egos and being right than anything else.

Not to take any of the wind out of Peter's sails, but another exciting announcement (a little closer to home for me) is on the verge of being made.

My husband, Mike Gibson, will be throwing his hat in the ring for another run at Ventura City Council this November. Our whole family and many in the community we've spoken with are absolutely thrilled that Mike is going to run again and we will be supporting him 1000%. We are all looking forward to an exciting, tough, and engaging race. One that is going to rely heavily on input from the community at large and will be a an opportunity to lend voice to a community that is growing more dissatisfied and disillusioned by the day with our current City Council who have made some horrendous decisions over the past couple of years, some of which have made our collective heads spin:

The 911 fee fiasco; losing $10 million in bad investments of taxpayer dollars; raising utility rates on seniors and the poor by 14%, with no regard for the consequences of this action on these poor folks and their personal finances during an economic recession; enhanced retirement benefits for city firefighters while the rest of the folks in the community are barely hanging onto their jobs; doing their best to discourage Walmart from coming to town, which would have brought in an extra $1 million a year in new tax revenue; scaring off potential businesses and retailers by the ill-conceived, anti-economic growth Victora Corridor Plan (which they are scheduled to approve on Feb 23rd); wasting untold taxpayer dollars on unneeded consultants, like the $110,000 they approved for "technical assistance" the view task force (a task force that wasn't needed in the first place).

This is just a partial list of the bungling efforts and gross mismanagement that has been carried out by these so-called City leaders the past few years.

As a family, we will be committing all the personnel, consulting, and financial resources necessary this time to ensure that Mike does a great job in this race. He was a bit disappointed at his showing last time, but has vowed to make a much stronger go of it this time, including much more precinct-walking, getting out to all the events to meet people in the community first-hand, producing and direct-mailing many, many more flyers to get his message out to the community, and airing several radio ads to reach every area of the community possible.

Mike's nephew (an IT whiz at Chapman College) is already developing an interactive web site, modeled after the one Barack Obama used so effectively in his election to solicit donations and volunteers.

As I said before, no expenses will be spared as we are prepared to put up a significant amount of our own personal resources towards this effort. It is that important to Mike and, as he put himself, extremely important to the future of this community that he loves and cares about so nuch. We have already spoken to quite a few friends in the business community who have committed to making donations to his campaign and will be looking towards many of our colleagues in the Ventura County Republican Central Committee for financial contributions and other support. We have estimated that this effort will take at least $50,000 to do right.

Let me tell you, that he was not very excited about the prospects of running another campaign until recently. We had a heart-to-heart, serious family meeting at the end of last week, based on the issues that have been festering in this community over the last two years, based on the continued failed policies of this City Council and the City administration. Myself, and my three grown children looked him straight in the eye and asked him if he could possibly sit by and let this continue unabated without at least trying to initiate some changes in the elected body of our City to get things moving again in the right direction.

He looked and us and shook his head slowly. "You're right. I can't sit it out," he responded. "I've got to try and do something to get our City back on track."

I think he's getting used to the idea already. He's even roped me into being his campaign treasurer already!

Feel free to pass on any thoughts or comments to Mike's e-mail address at: mgibson1856@yahoo.com

Thanks and God bless you all!

Sorry, but I would not vote for Gibson for dog catcher, let alone City Council!
