I am going to be teaching a unit on the views people have towards different forms of media coverage of politics. I would like to use scenes from Outfoxed and from Media Malpractice.
Outfoxed is a film from a left wing perspective that is critical of Fox News. If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it although it seems a little outdated now. I have access to it already because it is on Youtube.
Media Malpractice is a new documentary that is critical of the media for their coverage of the presidential campaign. Former KFI talk show host John Ziegler sets out to prove that the media wanted Barack Obama to win and they altered their coverage to help him. It isn't currently on youtube and I would like to use it. If you want to buy it I will use it and make it accessible to other educators interested in the subject. Feel free to watch it first.

Thanks!

Sarah Palin is so right about the crazy liberal media! It was the media's fault that she cheated on her taxes and lied to get per diem money that she must now pay back. It was Katie Couric's fault for asking her questions that were way way too hard for poor Sarah to answer. It is the media's fault that they do not get that Sarah shooting baby polar bears from a helicopter is good for the environment! It was even the media's fault that her daughter got pregnant at 17 and is now on welfare with her out of work 18 year old husband!
wow Katty - so much hate.
Sarah shooting baby polar bears from a helicopter? (never happened - the story was about Alaska allowing Wolves to be hunted by helicopter)
Daughter on welfare? and married (she isn't)
Palin looking stupid in Couric's interview was the only thing you said that was even close to the truth.
Do you believe that Palin said she could see Russia from her front porch too?
Even the haters haven't made up so much poo.
How about commenting on the point of the article.
I'm assuming that you don't think the media coverage of the presidential election was biased towards the democrats and Mr. Obama in particular?
Do you even know who John Ziegler is?
What do you think of Brian asking someone to fork over the $25 so he doesn't have to?
Brian, do you always steal copyrighted material when it appears on Youtube? - you do know that's breaking the law right?
KoeJoes,
The company posted major portions of it on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=bravenewfilms&view=videos&query=outfoxed
It isn't against the law for a company to post all or portions of their films on youtube. I also own the DVD, although I don't remember where it is currently.
I listened to John Ziegler when he was on KFI for a long time. Did you too?
Brian,
I was directing most of my response to Katty (now Not Katty)
Only the last sentence was directed to you. I'm glad you don't advocate copyright infringement. I apologize about the stealing part, but there's a lot of copyrighted material that gets on youtube without the blessing of the copyright owner
I regularly listened to Ziegler when he was on KFI. The man has stones of steel and just because he disagreed with Kobel, KFI threw him under the bus. I was listening to his 2 minute updates on 1540 and was expecting them to give him a show; but then they went with all syndicated shows.
What do you think of Katty's assertions? And what is your opinion of the popular media's coverage of recent elections?
I felt a bias towards the democrats. Some of it very obvious (Olberman comes to mind immedietly).
I'm glad the new glitch got taken care of; but does that mean it all goes away again tomorrow morning?
KoeJoes,
I think Sarah Palin helped to energize the base of both parties. In some elections that is helpful. She didn't get the best media coverage, but at times it was clearly her fault.
How hard is it to say what newspapers and magazines you read? KoeJoe, what newspapers and magazines do you like to read?
Sarah Palin guaranteed John McCain would lose. What Sarah did and said is a matter of the public record now. Was it Couric's fault she could not answer the simplest of questions? Is it anyone's fault but Palin's that she gets off on killing animals? If Palin really represents the GOP then I think it is a very sad sad day for the party of Lincoln.
Hey Brian, I read a bunch of newspapers (mostly on-line - LA Times and AP on Yahoo news), but we do get the LA Daily News delivered. We were going to get the Star, but it costs 4 times what the Daily News does.
I must have missed where you asked me what papers and magazines I read before your post on 3/2.
As to magazines. I read some car mags and technical journals in medicine and computing.
I shy away from political magazines. I listen to talk radio on my way to and from work. Mostly Handel in the morning, I skip around on the way home -going from John and Ken, to Mark Levin to Hugh Hewit to the news to music and sports.
To answer your question that you sent via e-mail; I learned about your blog because my son responds on Marie's subjects and I saw your blog and found the various topics compelling.
And to complete my little self exposition, I have a bachelors degree and have been working as a computer programmer / systems analyst for the last 30 years.
Koejoes,
Thanks for reading and commenting on my blog.
Thanks for sharing your reading list. You seem well rounded and informed. Why was it so hard for Sarah Palin to answer that same question?
I don't read much in print but I like Reason Magazine ( A libertarian group), Education Next ( a right leaning education reform magazine, and a few others. I read mostly local blogs, Dailykos.com, Flashreport.org, Talkingpointsmemo.com, VenturaCountyStar.com, and Andrew Sullivan. I enjoy well reasoned arguments from across the political spectrum as it helps me understand other people and have a wider world view.
I also listen to talk radio, but mostly KFI AM 640. I have listened to Bill Handel and John and Ken for many years.
Why couldn't Sarah Palin answer that same question?
I also recommend that interested readers subscribe to Saudi Aramco's magazine of Arab and Muslim culture. To get a free subscription go to:

Thank you for the compliments.
I honestly don't have a clue why Palin did so badly on the interviews. I don't think she's dumb, but maybe the whole national TV interview just threw her for a loop. She was not a national figure by any means and Alaska is a very small state and I would imagine the press up there is cozier to the government than the press in the lower 48.
I knew about Palin being a VP possibility about 6 months before McCain selected her and thought she would be a compelling candidate.
Her Couric interview was a definite disaster.
All that being said, Obama is the president and he will get all the credit and/or all the vilification for whatever happens in the next 4 years.
I think he's in it way over his head, much like GW was in 2001. However, Obama has a much worse situation and it looks like he's still campaigning instead of governing. His first couple of weeks in office he (and the Dems in Congress) kept on the mantra of the "worst economic situation since the great depression" until Bill Clinton admonished him for his negativity.
Biden should be able to council him about foreign policy, but he's been wrong about everything he's ever espoused on the subject so no joy there. I sat in utter amazement at some of the fictions he came up with during the VP debate.
OH and I got my stimulus tax reduction on today's paycheck. I'm $12 richer! But since my state taxes are going up - i'll still be under water :(
