Fresh from winning a seat in the House last Tuesday John Garamendi has endorsed Susan Jordan for State Assembly.
Two House seats were up for election last Tuesday night. One in New York where a Democrat won a district represented by Republicans since the Civil War era and one here in California that was represented by a moderate Democrat.
John Garamendi has long been supported by progressive Democrats for supporting progressive causes and candidates across the state. With the newly elected Democrat from New York Barack Obama has two new supporters in the House for his healthcare insurance reform proposals.
It took real effort for Republicans to lose that seat from New York but they joined forces against their own candidate. Far right blogger Michelle Malkin got it going by calling the Republican nominee a "radical leftist" and other bloggers took it from there. When Sarah Palin and Fred Thompson joining the attack on the Republican nominee the stage was set for a Democratic victory. It took the combined forces of Palin, Beck, and other fringe conservatives to lose this campaign. They even made Newt Gingrich look like a moderate!
Susan Jordan should be proud of this endorsement. John Garamendi will be a strong addition to her list of supporters.

Congressmember John Garamendi Endorses Susan Jordan for 35th Assembly District
Former Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi, who was elected to the United States House of Representatives on Tuesday, has thrown his support behind Susan Jordan in her 2010 race for Assembly District 35.
"I support Susan Jordan for State Assembly because she is smart, bold and she has proven that she's not afraid to disagree with those in power. The people of Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties can count on Susan to stand up for the environment, better health care and quality schools. She's on the side of the people."Jordan is an award-winning environmental leader, a businesswoman, health advocate and mother with 35 years of experience working for the betterment of her community.
Jordan has drawn strong support from leaders in education, health care, and those who represent working families. But, it's her fighting spirit for the people of California which has won her the most accolades. Garamendi has been an ally to Jordan in many of her statewide coastal protection efforts.
"I first worked with John against new federal offshore oil drilling off the California coast back in the 1990s, when he was President Clinton's second in command at the Department of Interior," Jordan said."In 2007, when I led the fight to stop the approval of the first Liquefied Natural Gas terminal off the coast of Ventura and Los Angeles counties, the Lieutenant Governor provided a critical 'no vote' at the State Lands Commission that stopped the proposal in its tracks.
"In 2009, when I refused to support the first new offshore oil lease in state waters in 40 years, John voted against the proposal by Plains Exploration and Production saying that a secret sweetheart deal for an oil company that was unenforceable was a bad deal for the State of California.
"John is a true fighter for our environment and our state and I am deeply honored to have his endorsement. I look forward to working with him in the future in his new role as the Congressman for the 10th Congressional District."

I'm going to have to call you on your analysis of the Garamendi election.
In a district that is overwhelmingly Democrat (almost a 19% registration edge) the sitting Lt. Governor, past Insurance Commissioner, past Legislator, a guy who had been elected Statewide 3 times, beat an unknown, never before elected to anything, guy by only a little over 10 points.
That means he lost a huge part of his own party. Not a very good showing heading into 2010.
As far as the New York race, that was a screw-up of massive proportions by the local party that could have been avoided. However, in an almost laughable demonstration of you get the government you deserve, the Democrat elected in the New York race broke 4 of his campaign promises in the first hour he was in office.
2010, definitely a Republican year.
This Republican supports Susan Jordon - she is by far the best of the bunch. Das Williams (D) and Mike Stoker (R) represents the fringe of each party - neither one is fit to represent the district.
It is an insult to the taxpayers when the spouse of a termed out
politician runs for his office....which is HIS office, but it is the peoples' office....
What did Garamendi ever do for me? Absolutley nothing
Andy,
The Ventura County Republican Central Commitee are all in bed with each other. Atleast she got married.
Not an insult at all when the best qualified candidate runs. They've only been married a few years. She's had a long, successful career in business, plus award-winning statewide environmental activism, local duty as chair of the Santa Barbara Planning Commission, health care background, women's issues, etc.
She's taken on our governor three times and won! She's courageous and has my support.
Go Susan!
Voter,
You are right Garamendi had many advantages that he used to win the election. Why did you party nominate someone that had never been elected to anything? Garamendi didn't even live in the district and he won. I agree it was obvious he was going to win.
Either way he is more progressive than the former member that represented the district and he is expected to support healthcare insurance reform.
Thanks for reading and commenting on my blog.
What was the voter turnout in Garamendi's race? If the turnout was low, the Repubs would probably have had a natural advantage and a 10 point margin for Garamendi would be a more substantial win than if there had been a high turnout.
RE:Not an insult at all when the best qualified candidate runs
Qualified for what...to raise our taxes higher?
I don't see the stuff you listed qualified her to sit in OUR assembly...i think the only qualification is an age and residency one....
Andy and Marie:
It is obvious that both of you have already made-up your mind regarding Ms. Jordan's qualifications or lack thereof, for the State Assembly.
That's not surprising since one of you is a strong supporter of hers, and the other a strong critic.
But what about the rest of us 35th Assembly District voters??
It's pretty hard for independent voters who've not yet made up their minds to assess Ms. Jordan's qualifications for office if she doesn't even have them, or anything else for that matter, listed on her website. (See URL above)
She's had the "coming soon, under construction" sign on that website ever since she announced for that office, more than six months ago, in the Spring of this year..
Not sure what mystical public outreach logic is behind Ms. Jordan's belated unveiling of her website, but in politics perception is reality..
Ms. Jordan, if you or your communications gurus read this blog, how about rolling out your campaign website sooner rather than later???
After all, Ms. Jordan, "...Tempis fugit.."

If you voted to abolish the VR fee, you also voted to raise your taxes. If you voted to make a $9B down payment on a $27B high speed rail from LA to SF, you also voted to raise your taxes. If you support a $10B advance to bring new water supplies to SCal developers and golf course, you also are voting to raise your taxes. When you cut taxes for the owners of corporate jets and business yachts, you raise taxes on yourself. The same goes when you approve of allowing businesses to avoid paying the same property taxes as you and I, when you allow your Governator to cut education and health budgets, when you use propositions to order Sacramento legislators to borrow from Wall Street bond mavens and when you let the state to furlough a quarter million consumers. When you do any of those things, Andy, you support raising taxes for yourself.
Don't eat the seed corn unless you're prepared to pay for imported cornbread.

I always vote against ALL bond issues....and especially vote against school bond issues...and sales tax increases like the tax raisers in ventura tried to push thru....so they could put more pay in their own pockets
So do I. But remember that when you cut education budgets you are voting to raise taxes to cover the increased costs of crime & incarceration, the loss of revenues because businesses can't hire enough skilled workers and the costs of a growing, unskilled workforce that has limited earning power.

"It is an insult to the taxpayers when the spouse of a termed out

Then you don't think Adura Strickland should have run for Tony's seat in the Assembly?
You're a little late and a partisan dollar token short Leshon..
On Brian's, Daniel's, Eric's, and Marie's blogs, time and again Levinson has shown about as much blogging love for the Stricklands as a political couple as he does for Pedro and Susan, which is ZERO..
He's been an equal opportunity opponent of husband terms-out and then passes off legislative seat to wife tag-teams in the CA Legislature, REGARDLESS of party..
Notwithstanding whether you or I agree or disagree with him in this regard, in my book, Mssr. Levinson deserves respect for demonstrating the courage of his political convictions..
NostraDemus
Well I suppose we could instead have Mike Stoker who works for Tony Strickland and serial polluter Greka Energy. Then Strickland could control an entire very Democratic-leaning area. Or Das, who worked for Hannah-Beth and now wants her former seat.
There are tight political connections with every candidate in this race.
It has been my experience that when folks sit down and talk to Susan they are so impressed by her experience and drive that the familial connection issue is irrelevant. Actually, the fact that she is married to Pedro has been a very big plus for her in most circles.
But her wonderful endorsements speak to her long career, which she has built all by herself. People of John Garamendi's and Phil Angelides' stature do not endorse downticket races unless the candidate has proven themselves on their own merits.
RE:Then you don't think Adura Strickland should have run for Tony's seat in the Assembly?
No, the stricklands are an insult to every taxpayer too.....the spouse should be included in term limits
RE: So do I. But remember that when you cut education budgets you are voting to raise taxes to cover the increased costs of crime & incarceration. etc
That's right from the NEA play book...union-speak
Public education is the biggest business in california...it consumes everything....40% of the state budget....since the california state budget has doubled in the past ten years....we could live with a 50% budget cut....putting public employee wages back to where they were ten years ago....
p.s. there are 61 state and local government run retirement agencies for public employee in california.....and there is only one social security, and california's 300,000 teachers don't pay any social security taxes....the schools have saved billions over the years by not paying any employer share of social security
So then you think Lois Capps should quit?
Boy howdy, it sure was fun watching Garamendi kick the living horse crud outa that republicant!
RE:So then you think Lois Capps should quit?
Can't trust any of them....not of single one of them, from the lowest councilman to the president
