Greetings everyone; Our meeting this month will be on the economy. 7:00, November 18 at the main library on Tapo Canyon. Brad Parker will be speaking on the subject and I have a request in to the Channel Islands speaker bureau looking for another.
We are still looking for nominations for club leadership positions that open up in January. We need one or 2 more suggestions to put on the slate for the next meeting. The slate will be announced in December and we will swear in the new people in January. If any of you are at all interested or know of someone who might be, please contact me before the next meeting. All members are also welcome to come to the e-board meetings and throw in suggestions on running the club for the following year.
In an effort to make the club more effective and reach out to new members, we have decided that we would like to put more emphasis on community volunteerism for the club as a whole.
We plan to start some committees in the coming year to make the club more of an action center for the community and are looking for people interested in working on these issues and any others that you might feel passionate about.1. Environmental Committee; to help the city and county work on green issues like state subsidies for solar panels, to encourage green industries in the county, help the city with green retrofitting projects; to plant trees and encourage local gardens.
2. Food Share
3. Veterans Outreach
4. Adopt - A - Family. Find a local family and donate items, see what kind of help they might need.
5. Homeless Shelters.
6. Retirement Homes
7. Media Team to write op-ed pieces on a regular basis.

Hi Brian,
I am always up for helping to coordinate community volunteers for great community service projects.
As a non-partisan community activist I believe in working with everyone who has an interest in helping the community regardless of party affiliation.
The best thing anyone could do for the community is to help fight against the staggering oppressive taxes the county supervisors, city councils, and state legislatures has forced upon the people....
All incumbents should be thrown out of office...at every election,we have county supervisors, and city councilmen around hear who just refuse to go away, such as Sup Kathy Long, and T.O. councilman Andy Fox...and now we have Linda parks running for her third term as supervisor.....12 years as supervisor is ridiculous
I'm am not even going to mention how these local polticos have destroyed the life style of local residents around these parts by doubling the county's take of taxes over the past ten years from to $1.6 billion....wasting it all on salary increases for public employees, who are the new rich around here.....
Andy,
I disagree, the best thing anyone could do for their community is volunteer and mentor youth. Your investment in a child's development and education will help heal the problems of today. You can complain and give lip service about taxes that go to pay for prisons, welfare, etc. Prisonors and adults who are chronic welfare recipienets and uneducated are a result of legislators being shortsighted when they cut education, early intervention, rehabilitation, children social services programs, etc. I am not saying to enable the adult I am saying to free the child, give them the support and tools they need to stop repeating the cycle of their parents. I realize you don't agree YOUR taxes Andy, should pay for such things and that it is the responsibility of parents and actually I agree it IS the responsibility of parents but what do we do when the parents fall short, society then has a systemic problem.
Take a look at the man in the mirror, what have you done above and beyond paying taxes, writing a check for an occasional donation, have you made a difference in the life of a child other than your own. If you are blessed to be able to reach out beyond your own children than I believe it is our moral imperative to nuture all children regardless of who they are and their circimstances. You Andy, may have no empathy for their parents but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't as a community try to help their child break the cycle of social welfare, illiteracy, wellness and dependence. It's better to build a boy then mend a man.
Want to feel good about tomorrow, volunteer, become a CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocate, coach a ball team, lead a church youth group, boy scouts, Big Brothers/Sisters, provide a scholarship to an aspiring youth, teach a financial literacy class, help young adults learn about other cultures and foster awareness and acceptance.
Once you find a young adult who you believe has promise nurture them and groom them to become a leader, get them involved in local politics. And that does not mean indocrinate them, it means respecting them enough to give them the best possible education in order to be ale to make intelligent, educated and well informed decisions about how our government would work the best for the entire community. I am sure that Brian would agree with my sentiments.
