Ventura County Christmas Traditions: The Becker Christmas Home

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

This Advent season I am going to be calling on my readers to share their favorite Ventura County Christmas traditions.

Christmas is among my favorite holidays now that I am a father. In Simi Valley a long tradition has been the Becker Christmas House on Sycamore Avenue. I have written about it here and here in the past.

A young fan of theirs created a Facebook page to thank them for the joy they have brought to generations of young people. Our goal is to get 5,000 fans for their page by Christmas.

If you would like to write a guest blog entry on your favorite Ventura County Christmas traditions let me know. You can also post a comment on this entry. Merry Christmas!

Buy Local Day This Weekend

When you shop local you keep your tax dollars help to pay for the services we all use. If you see a great deal this weekend post it on my blog or on the Shop Simi Valley First Facebook page. You don't need to register to post a comment here.

Here is an offer from Simi Valley's Tico's Tacos:

Here is a repost of an earlier entry I wrote on the subject:

When you buy products locally the city gets a cut of the sales tax. The Simi Valley City Council and The Chamber of Commerce have hired a firm to run an ad campaign explaining that and other benefits to local people.

I don't know effective the ad campaign has been and I haven't seen a survey showing proof the city has had a return on their money. I have been critical of the ad campaign because of my skepticism over the effectiveness of such a campaign.

Personally I can't think of a single purchase that I have changed because of the campaign. I shop in Simi Valley because I live here. Has the campaign changed your purchases at all?

Click here for past blog entries I have written on the subject.

Instead of just being critical though I have chosen to help inform the public of the benefits of shopping locally. In the past I have promoted individual businesses and now I have created a fanpage on Facebook:

Click on become a fan above to join the grassroots push to inform the public of the benefits of shopping locally. For those of you that don't live in Simi Valley I will post a fanbox for your city too if you create a page.

I am not involved with the official program and I am not getting paid to promote it. But I do believe we benefit when people shop locally.

Simi Valley POA Reacts To The Election Results

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The Simi Valley Police Officers Association got involved in the recent city elections in a way they haven't done before. They have argued that the city hasn't dealt fairly with them in recent contract negotiations and that the contention was over more than just benefits. They announced their intentions to get much more involved in local elections long before the final field was settled.

They endorsed Bob Huber for Mayor over City Council Member Steve Sojka and Keith Mashburn for City Council.

The race for Mayor was an open seat election but the city council election had two incumbents running and several challengers for two seats. The POA wanted to defeat incumbents with Steve Sojka, Glen Becerra, and Michelle Foster on the ballot they had their targets.

Huber was also able to earn the support of Rep. Elton Gallegly, State Senator Tony Strickland, the Ventura County Republican Central Committee, and two former chairs of the Ventura County Democratic Central Committee.

Their endorsement of Huber over Sojka wasn't much of a surprise as Bob Huber was the only other candidate for mayor on the ballot and their goal was to defeat an incumbent. Steve Sojka counted as an incumbent because he was already on the city council.

What was much more interesting is their endorsement in the city council race. They had two strong challengers to choose from: retired firefighter Keith Mashburn and LAPD officer Mike Judge. They chose to endorse just Keith Mashburn, although they had many complimentary things to say about Mike Judge. They could have endorsed both of them and tried to get them to run as a slate. I haven't studied slate elections in nonpartisan elections enough to give a well informed opinion, but I am very interested in your opinions on this strategy. You don't need to register to post a comment but keep it classy.

That's academic for now as they chose to endorse just one challenger. I imagine one of the reasons they endorsed Keith Mashburn over Mike Judge was that they thought Mashburn was more electable. That of course turned out to be funny because Mike Judge won without their support.

I am very impressed with Mike Judge's campaign. He had very little money and almost no endorsements. His fundraisers were mostly attended by actual friends of his. That's unlike when other politicians call big campaign contributors that have business in front of them "friends".

The POA most wanted to defeat Glen Beccera on the city council but they ended up contributing to the defeat of Michelle Foster instead. The official score records their endorsed candidates going 1 for 2 in this election but they came out as clear victors. They were able to defeat two incumbents and a police officer was elected to the council.

Click on continue reading for their press release.

It will be interesting to see how involved they will be in two years when Bob Huber will be up for re-election and the two seats currently occupied by Steve Sojka and Barbra Williamson will be up for election.

Both of those incumbents have significant strengths that might deter many challengers from running against them if they both run again. Steve Sojka obviously has a large base of support he built upon in the last election and Barbra Williamson has been very open in her opposition to the landfill/dump expansion plans.

There are many arguments over the validity of expanding the landfill but it is a fact that enlarging the landfill to take more trash from outside areas is very unpopular. A smart politician might come out and convince people that it is in the best interest of the city to support the expansion. But so far that hasn't happened. That means Barbra Williamson goes into the next cycle with a a strong advantage.

History Lesson: Red Versus Blue States

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

This animated map shows the changes in red versus blue states over from 1920 on. Ventura County is currently blue if the metric is voter registration. But by measuring who we send to Sacramento and DC we are a reddish purple.

A Victory For Animals: Thank You Rep. Gallegly and The Lameduck Senate Session

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

I am among the most vocal critics of Rep. Elton Gallegly in Ventura County.

It bothers me that he votes against so many policies supported by the President when Barack Obama won in his congressional district.

I don't like that he doesn't hold townhall meetings that are scheduled and open to the public, like every other Member of Congress in this region.

But I do have to give him credit for championing animal rights. His ban on a disgusting form of animal abuse has passed the Senate. Click here for details.

I support his logic in understanding that animal cruelty is immoral and an indicator of something profoundly unhealthy:

Rep. Elton Gallegly, R-Calif., a sponsor of the original bill in 1999, said in a previous statement that another reason to ban the videos was the tendency in some people to transfer cruelty to animals to cruelty to humans. He cited the cases of famed killers such as Ted Bundy and Ted Kaczynski, saying they tortured or killed animals before killing people.

As a vegetarian that supports animal rights I do think that a society that respects animals will protect justice and promote peace.

St. Francis, who is among my favorite saints, said it best:

If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.

Quantitative Easing Explained: He Does Have A Nice Beard

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

This viral video that attempts to explain quantitative easing in a funny way. I have seen it posted on Facebook by both liberal and conservative friends. Republicans clearly won the midterm elections. But recent polls shows the public doesn't like their agenda much either.

Partisans want us to think that America is either moving to the right or the left. But instead of moving towards Bush conservatism or Obama liberalism somehow we are drifting towards an odd mixture of Pat Buchanan and Michael Moore populism.

The politicians that capture the unease and anger moving through the electorate will be successful. From a local Simi Valley election to DC populism is here again. It is a dangerous and powerful force. I hope it will be channeled for the greater good.

War on Christmas: Tony Strickland Versus Bill O'Reilly?

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

State Senator Tony Strickland recently emailed out an update on his duties as a State Senator for our area. Click on continue reading to see it.

I appreciate his summary of recent local events he has attended and his priorities in Sacramento. I disagree with many of his positions but I like that he keeps us informed on what he is doing.

He also includes his upcoming schedule, which includes some holiday parties at his district offices. I don't mind if a government official calls it a holiday party, but Bill O'Reilly of Fox News does. He spends a considerable amount of time each year going after businesses that say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas.

I like Christmas. I plan to get my lights up BEFORE Thanksgiving. That said I think the whole debate is silly.

Forgetting the exaggerated title I like that State Senator Tony Strickland invites the public to meet with him. Too bad more local legislators don't do the same thing.

Timm Herdt: No longer 95% accurate?

wordle_ventura.png

I used the text from Timm Herdt's article to create the wordle above.

Ventura County Star Reporter Timm Herdt has been analyzing the election results to find out more than who won. He has been tracking trends to measure how much of a bellwether Ventura County is for California.

Ventura County Democrats lost ground in statewide races like governor in the 2010 midterm elections. But no Ventura County partisan seat switched party control including State Assembly or Congressional seats. That would make the results look closer to a draw to me once we consider the nonpartisan seats including school board seats.

Democrats were able to elect many qualified progressives to school board seats across Ventura County. The new group of school board members includes many party supporters who will create a base of support for other candidates. In addition, Democrats have grown their list of potential candidates for future campaigns.

One such candidate is Nathan Sweet of Moorpark. He is a charismatic leader who is a firefighter, father with young children, and will be on the school board soon. He will have credibility to discuss public safety and education.

I predict he will be a great candidate for higher office in the future.

The results of an election are known both in the short and long term.

2012 State Assembly: Das Williams Versus Mike Stoker?

daswilliams_mikestoker.png

Democrat Das Williams hasn't been certified as the winner yet and Republican Mike Stoker has sent out an email announcing he is planning to run again. Besides personal animosity between the two, I assume Mike Stoker is trying to clear the field of primary challengers.

I am interested to see Audra Strickland's next career move.

Will Rep. Elton Gallegly Retire?

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

The election is over and Rep. Elton Gallegly has won a seat in congress again. But with a presidential election year and redistricting likely to alter the situation will he run again?

I haven't seen when the new districts are likely to be announced. If you know please post a comment and inform us.

If Rep. Elton Gallegly doesn't run again which Republican would you like to replace him? You can vote for multiple answers or suggest your own.

Tim Allison Thanks His Supporters

allison_gallegly.png

The results above aren't final but I don't expect them to change much. With numbers like this Democrats will have a tough time attracting a great candidate to challenge Rep. Elton Gallegly in 2012, if Gallegly runs again. But with the chance that redistricting could change the situation dramatically, things can change quickly.

That brings us to who Democrats should nominate. I fully expect Tim Allison will give serious consideration to running again. Many times it takes more than once for a candidate to get their name out there before they are elected.

Tim Allison sent out a thank you message to his supporters expressing his gratitude for supporting him against Rep. Elton Gallegly. Click on continue reading for details.

I know I will be among many people waiting to find out how redistricting changes the situation locally. Who would you like to see Democrats nominate? You can vote for as many candidates as you would like below or suggest your own. You don't need to register to leave a comment, but keep it classy.

Team Sojka Music Team Latest Video

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Steve Sojka supporter Kyle Quiroz has released another music video supporting Steve Sojka. His last music video went viral and has the most views for a youtube video supporting a Ventura County politician.

It has been a long campaign for Mayor of Simi Valley and both sides should be credited with invigorating democracy in Simi Valley. I am glad so many people connected with the campaigns and compelling issues were brought to the attention of the voting public. Simi Valley was well served by this contested election.

I have been updating the Facebook page for my blog with mailers, pictures, and observations. You can upload your pictures of mailers and campaign events there. I won't be attending any parties for mayor tomorrow night but it would be great if fans helped preserve history by uploading them to my facebook page.

Here are the lyrics:

"Sojka's Taking Over the Election" by Kyle Quiroz:
