Conejo Valley School Board candidate Tony Dolz wants to ban The Kite Runner

Conejo Valley School Board candidate Tony Dolz has a real problem with the book The Kite Runner. His platform on his website lists only two issues. One of them is to ban high school teachers from using The Kite Runner.

What surprises me is that the Republican Party supports such a candidate. He has support from Tony Strickland and the local Tea Party. Do they really think The Kite Runner should be banned? Is that really their priority? With all of the problems in schools their priority is banning this book?

Fun fact: The author of Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury, had close connections to Ventura County.

Maybe we can suggest those in favor of censorship to read his book.

I'm confused! These guys have been aggressively agitating for school budget cuts for years and now they want to stick their fingers in the dyke and prevent the consequences of those cuts from drown us all?

What were they thinking over the past four years that's changed so radically now, that another one of their political club members is running for local office?

I would never invite this guy to a party at my house cause I just know he'd use the toilet, crap up the place, stop up the bowl, and then blame the next guy to open the bathroom door.

GS,

Why do you think he has so much support from the local Tea Party?

"The Kite Runner" is pornographic crap and our teenage kids should not have it rammed down their throats. I agree wholeheartedly with Tony Dolz that it should be removed from the curriculum.

Tony Dolz has my vote for the School Board and Tony Strickland has my vote for Congress.

Brian, thank you for what you do here. I do not always agree with you but appreciate that you make an effort to present interesting topics and allow others with differing opinions to comment on the blog. The other competing blog promotes an extremely conservative viewpoint and allows NO OPPOSING views to be published for debate.

Brian, For various reasons I have supported CVUSD Bd Member Mike Dunn; this book is among recommended readings in High school by a
committee; it is one of 5 and students do NOT have to read all.
Mr. Dunn has proudly sd that he has not read the book & would not read it; he is running Tony on this platform; the book is about understanding Afghan/Muslim culture. It does NOT glorify nor titillate the reader about sex, or the one horrible act, which is a shame for the character.
The book however does do a great attempt to bridge the cultural divide. I bought another copy at our library sale on Fri & hope to present it to the Board @ their Tues meeting.
We all know what the tea party represents/its goals; I attended some meetings as I do fight tax waste and also over reg. etc. but these people have their own (many of them) agenda which is pretty extreme. Tony represents the same and hopes to use them to walk, donate etc. and get votes from the rest of us.
I wish this pic was widely circulated.
FYI there is a deliberate effort by some to fan the flames of hatred and clash between the East & the West!! Blessed are the Peacemakers for they will inherit the earth (is a saying??)

Nick,

Thank you for posting on my blog. The saying is from the Bible.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

First they ban books, then they burn books, next you have people goose stepping down the street. And so it goes.......

No one is banning books. All that is being suggested here is that this particular book, "The Kite Runner," is inappropriate for high school aged students and, as such, taxpayer dollars should not be used to purchase it.

The same is true with taxpayer dollars being used to kill babies via government-funded abortion clinics. Those of us who are against murdering babies should not have our tax dollars used against our will for this purpose.

If Obama is reelected, both of these activities will continue carte blanche.

NO You are wrong; this is NOT a text book It was recommended as part of 5 additional reading books; they are bought by the students; Mr. Dunn & Tony have asked to ban without themselves reading the book; Are these guys any better than Ayat. Khomeini??
They promote HATRED & war with Iran as the next step!! Do you want that after the Iraq/Afghan follies!!

According to Paul Ryan and the GOP if a man's wife is brutally raped and becomes pregnant she must have the child of the rapist, even if having that child means she will die in child birth, Republicans care more about the child of a rapist then your wife if she is raped! Kick all republicans out of office in 2012!

Das Williams expressed his undying support for child molesters when he successfully engineered an effort to kill a bill in the State Legislature recently that would have made it easier to fire teachers who are sexually assaulting or raping their students.

He did this because he was scared to death he would lose campaign contributions and support from the California Teachers' Association (CTA) if he allowed this bill to pass. Das Williams cares more about campaign contributions than he does about protecting children from being molested by perverts posing as teachers. Das Williams sold your children down the river for a few bucks from the CTA.

Das Williams is done due to his support of rapist teachers. We do not need State legislators who help child molesters and rapists thrive in our classrooms. Vote Das Williams out in November!!!

Tony's support for any candidate is always convenient and useful for him, but not very useful for the voters.

I do not support any candidate who favors censorship:

P.S. - I do not support any candidate that endorses a candidate who supports censorship.

I feel that if I sat down with Tony Dolz to discuss education in the CVUSD, we would agree on many things. One big one being that the Kite Runner is not appropriate for pre-teens, which is why it is optional literature for twelfth graders in the district.
Unfortunately, 50% of his issues with the district revolve around this book which is a strong, realistically fictional account of the horrors of the Taliban during the seventies and eighties. It is not a required reading so the senior students could opt out of reading it if they so desired.
The Kite Runner is a sad story of boy who becomes a man trying to flee from the Taliban to America.
I feel like this would be similar to white-washing Nazi Germany during the second great war because the violence was horrific. I hope Tony rethinks his position.

I lived in the Conejo Valley (JungleLand days) and don't understand what is even wrong with the Book and I read it. It's appropriate for 17 year olds. I think Doltz's church fears it because of its Islamic settings. I know Tony Dolz fled Cuba to Europe and moved his new Family here from his home in Europe at least 10 years ago. I hope the Conejo Valley will provide a excellent education for his two children but Censorship is not the American way. Of Course Tony Doltz
follows the line with Strickland and Romney/Ryan.

Dolz will get whipped! He is out of touch with voters here in the Conejo.
