What will Democrats do with their Super Majority?

What do you want Democrats to do with their Super Majority in the State Legislature?

I support ethics reforms, initiative reforms, education reform and education funding reform. We also need to address rising prison costs.

This article from Hullabaloo is critical of Democrats from being timid with their super majority. I would like stable budgets that do not require bad deals to get passed.

I am also curious what Republicans like Scott Wilk will be able to do in the State Assembly. Will he be able to put together a group of moderate Democrats and Republicans to influence policy? I doubt it but good luck to him in trying.

Republicans have the ability to alter their agenda to be more appealing to voters. It would be in the best interest of their party and our state for them to do so. If they supported moderate education reforms there are many families they would appeal to. But they might have to drop their support for right wing policies.

Scott Wilk, what will you do to support charter schools and reform protections for bad teachers?

A reader of mine asked me for some suggestions of blogs that cover Santa Clarita. If you can post some links and reviews I would appreciate it. You do not need to register to comment but keep it classy.

Here is the conversation that started it:

The Facebook page for my blog usually has better discussions. There are not anonymous comments and that often makes for more respectful and insightful posts. Sometimes I understand that there are meaningful reasons to be anonymous.

The Kite Runner is not getting banned

Tea Party school board candidate Tony Dolz did not earn enough support to win a seat on the school board in Thousand Oaks. He was supported by the Republican Party and many Tea Party activists. His website used to have only two issues on it.

One of his issues was banning The Kite Runner. Why? Because in the process of making the Taliban look evil it describes some of the horrible things they do in graphic detail. I am not sure why he wanted to ban The Kite Runner.

I think high school students are ready to learn about the Taliban.

Community College Board results: Ash Givargis and Bernardo Perez

I expected Ash Givargis do much better. He ran an energetic campaign. He had many signs in Simi Valley, he was waving signs , and he had the support of many Republican Party officials. His ballot designation listed him as a "businessman" when it appears his real occupation is working in the prison system. Both can be admirable jobs so I do not understand the reasoning in choosing to not mention his work more.

His opponent, Bernardo Perez started campaigning much later. Bernardo Perez had a few signs and was included on a few slate mailers, including the official Democratic Party slate sent to Democratic households. I was surprised that he did not run much of a campaign.

When the Republican Party appeared to be making this into a partisan race I spoke with Bernardo Perez. I was surprised he was not doing more. Obviously Bernardo Perez knew better than me what he needed to do.

He was supported by many Republican Party elected officials and activists. Look at this impressive list:

Ash Givargis ran a great campaign. I am glad there are people like him to challenge incumbents and to make them explain themselves to voters. The most important issue that our community college board needs to confront is keeping their accreditation. I am glad Ash Givargis made this an issue.

Good luck to Bernardo Perez is dealing with the board member that is threatening the accreditation of our Community Colleges.

Updated election results. No major changes.

For districts that include multiple counties go to the state website.

In Simi Valley Dan White, Debbie Sandland, and Rob Collins continue to lead in the race for the three seats on the school board.

Josie Hirsch ran a very competitive campaign. She had the support of many Republican elected officials including Buck McKeon, Scott Wilk, Tony Strickland, Barbra Williamson, Glen Becerra, and Mike Judge. The Ventura County Republican Central Committee also supported her.

It would be for the best if she continues to find ways to contribute to the community. She is working on bringing a Renaissance Fair to this area. I am planning on going. It should be a great event.

The three winning candidates did not get support from a political party. Dan White is a Republican. Debbie Sandland and Rob Collins declined the support of the Democratic Party. They could have been included on slate mailers, for free, sent to Democratic households. All three were endorsed by the teachers union. I was on the interview panel that talked with Dan White. I am really excited he will be on the school board. He has shared with me many of his plans for technology. His agenda for fixing how we use technology in Simi Valley schools is shared by teachers.
