Governor lays off 411 people in Ventura County, 32,315 Statewide

| | Comments (4)

The State Controller has released a chart showing how many people were laid off today by the Governor.

The chart shows the three categories of employees, the department or agency they work for and the county in which they work.

Ventura County has 411 layoffs, of which 194 are in the Parks and Recreation department. This could affect our fire fighting ability.

To see the chart go here.

Oh, the State Controller made it clear that the grounds the Governor is using, no money, is not true. Controller Chiang said he had enough money to pay the employees through August, then he would issue "RAW's"--Revenue Anticipation Warrants--after that. So, what will the $6.55 per hour attorneys use in the lawsuits to defend the Governors actions?

First, and seriously, thanks for posting a link to that chart of job actions. I just perused it a bit, and its very interesting.

A point or two...better than half are "Temporary" workers, one quarter are "Permanent Intermittant".

An intersting question is how long have some of the temps been temporary? The "Permanent Intermittant" may sound suspicious, but is often (though not always) an appropriate employment arrangement for folks like lifeguards or poll workers. Many forest firefighters have this type of employment.

Which bring me to a remark you made, and I believe in sincerity, that "Ventura County has 411 layoffs, of which 194 are in the Parks and Recreation department. This could affect our fire fighting ability."

I feel for those people as much as I would anyone losing their job through no fault of their own, but Steve, firefighters fight fires. Parks and Rec people usually clean bathroom, pick up trash, do maintanece, work at concessions.

It's just as tragic, but I don't think this job loss will affect fire-fighting appreciably.

Steve,

I heard that the Governor announced today that he will be vetoing any legislation that crosses his desk that is not associated with the State budget.

No action on helium balloon bills, reducing plastic content in toys, or any other such political theater until they get serious about passing a budget.

Hooray for him!

Smoke and mirrors...what they are getting is a paid summer vacation....everyone will get paid...plus it will be an accounting nightmare

....since everyone will get his pay made up when a budget is passed....we will be paying millions in extra payroll costs to the people who do the payroll to figure this mess out....

As long as the Governor minimalizes himself with claims he won't sing bills till the budget is passed, laying off people and cutting wages--all being challenged in the courts and costing us millions, we will not get a budget.

He needs to make himself clear--no new taxes, fees or increased spending. Until the Democrat believe he means that, they have no reason to pass a budget.
