Leadership

California has taken the lead on many issue, including universal healthcare coverage and global warming... but why should a state have to do such things that are really national responsibilities?

Much of the rest of the nation would be happy to see California leave. Or fall into the ocean!
Posted by: Steve Greenberg at October 2, 2007 11:26 AMWell said, Steve. Maybe we should accomodate them. (not by falling into the ocean, though.)
Posted by: Shaver One at October 2, 2007 12:10 PMI agree! It is time for California to secede and return to its original status as a free and independent republic. Its even right on our flag!
The US federal government has proven itself time and time again that it is unwilling and/or unable to provide leadership to improve the quality of life for our citizens. When a large government is unable to do that, it is time to get to a more manageable local level.
I support the non-violent and peaceful separation of California from the US!

Maybe it's time for California to secede from the US, and form the new nation: The Republic of California. We already have the 6th largest economy in the world. We already supply the nation with 70+% of their food.
Posted by: Shaver One at October 2, 2007 11:07 AMWe could use our own resources, like California oil (which the EPA will not let us use) for the betterment of Californians. We have the infrastructure in place to form 'states' with a representative government. We already have the brain power in the Silicon Valley for innovation. We already have the seaports for a thriving fishing industry. We aleady have the San Joachin Valley and Ventura County for a thriving agricultural industry.
I think we also have enough support of the citizenry, if asked, that would go along with secession.
If the Federal Government won't listen to the state of California, maybe it will listen to the nation of California.
Just a thought.
