China Olympics smog

The Olympic Games in Beijing are intended to be China's showcase to the world of what a modern society it has become. Cutting state worker's pay

To ratchet up the pressure for the legislature to pass a state budget, Gov. Schwarzenegger has proposed slashing the pay of all state workers to minimum wage, arguing the state is running out of money (because the legislature has been unable to pass a state budget).

Coastal drilling

Drilling for more oil off the coast, beyond the potential environmental impact, the many-year wait for results and the fact it would only slightly affect our oil supply, still leaves us where we are now: dependent on burning fossil fuels and adding to the greenhouse gases that are warming the planet at an alarming rate.

Now what are the residents to do, run across a busy freeway?

Global Warming summit

What emerged was a weak, nonbinding pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2050, more than 40 years off. Said a spokesman for one leading environmental organization, "At this rate, by 2050 the world will be cooked and the G-8 leaders will be long forgotten."

Tick... tick... tick...

Israel is understandably alarmed by the prospect of a nuclear-armed Iran, given that Iran has expressed a clear desire to wipe Israel off the map. Both sides, along with the U.S., are showing force and issuing warnings. This is a very scary situation, with the potential to become an enormous, catastrophic region-wide conflagration.

Coming home to roost

High gas prices, higher prices for most goods and now miserable vehicle sales -- all problems of our own making, through poor consumer choices and poor government planning, and now the problems have come home to roost.

Hands-free cell phone law

Don't forget, the state's new hands-free mandate for using cell phones while driving takes effect today. $20 fine for the first violation, $50 for the next. Whoever manufactures "Bluetooth" headsets thanks you...
