The bailout

Yikes! The better part of a trillion dollars to bail out Wall Street firms collapsing from the economic meltdown. The government can't afford to do nothing, alas. And Bush, as is his usual modus operandi, is pushing for Congress to act on the administration's proposal instantly. Fortunately, some members of Congress are inclined to look just a bit closer at the proposal, including seeking more oversight, with some asking that the relief include something for the average citizen as well, not just those firms who screwed up on a colossal scale.

It IS funny how the Neocons blame the Dems for everything...while forgetting that McCain's current economic advisor, Phil Gramm was the architect of this meltdown when he penned the rules deregulating Wall Street. John McCain, the Great Deregulator, approved of this action.

This situation could have been avoided if folks like Chris Dodd and Barney Frank hadn't denied the need for additional oversight over the last few years. John McCain talked about this problem in 2006 and the need for oversight.
The more glaring issue here is the free market tampering by government agencies. When federal agencies, like Freddie and Fannie, insist that folks receive home loans they don't qualify for and can't possible pay back, this is the outcome.
