Prop. 2 (animal cruelty)

qqxsgProp2 Pigs.jpg

Proposition 2 on the November ballot mandates that animals being raised commercially for food be kept in humane pens... in many cases currently, livestock and poultry are kept in extremely restrictive cages and pens with very limited ability to move, in the name of efficiency.

Steve, Can you do a corresponding cartoon, something about children going hungry after Prop. 2 passes because their parents can't afford meat that is raised at a country club. That would be pretty funny...

Dear Randal... (The proposition does not mention country clubs! It mentions room to turn around and stretch limbs.) Many of us have given up meat and dairy COMPLETELY, and we don't "go hungry"! In fact, we are HEALTHIER with our plant-based diets. Most children are born with a love for animals, and many of us still feel that love. (Meat has not appealed to me since I toured a slaughterhouse as a child and saw the suffering up close.) I'm sure most children would prefer a healthy dietary shift if they knew they could help prevent the suffering of their fellow earthlings. THIS grownup child is thrilled to vote YES on Prop 2! I'm sorry you grew out of your ability to feel compassion for other creatures.

And what of the vegetables that you consume, those poor creatures. You rip carrots from their natural habitat, skin and behead them, steam, boil, sautee', stir-fry... What about the squash that you slice and dice? If they only had a voice to express the pain and anguish they feel. Have you lost your compassion? Have you become numb to the pain that our leafy friends feel? Salad is murder...
