Dear readers and viewers, this is my final entry to this blog. I'll be leaving the Ventura County Star, where I've worked as an artist and cartoonist since June 2002, and moving onto other things, and won't be able to update this anymore.

However, that doesn't mean I'll stop drawing. You can see my future cartoons on

After eight years of the Bush Administration's inaction on, and general denial of, global warming (until quite recently), the Obama Administration promises aggressive action and international cooperation in dealing with this crisis.

The state budget passed in September was a dog, or as the governor put it, "We just kicked the can down the road." With the ever-declining economy, the state budget not only isn't fixed, but the shortfall has soared from maybe $15 billion to a possible projected $27.8 billion. Schwarzenegger wants to bring the Legislature back in session to fix the mess, again.

All the slogans, the buttons, the You Tube videos and Saturday Night Live spoofs, and all the idealism doesn't mean much if you don't actually get around to doing the actual voting.

Prop. 8

Although I'm not a Libertarian, Prop. 8 kind of begs the question, "if two people find happiness together, and it doesn't directly affect you, then why should that be any source of unhappiness for you?" Or, isn't the idea of people being committed, and not promiscuous, a positive thing?

The age issue

If elected, John McCain would be the oldest president at inauguration ever. Remarkably, the age issue has not come up much during the campaign, being seen as too insensitive or offensive a topic to mention. But the actuarial tables of average life expectancy indicate that a 72 year old man would, on statistical average, not live an additional four years. Many newspapers that normally would endorse Republicans that instead endorsed Obama cited the selection of Sarah Palin, saying she's simply not ready to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, and yet she might be the vice president most likely to succeed a sitting president.

Propositon 11 (redistricting)

Nearly every newspaper in California has endorsed the redistricting measure, Prop. 11 as being, while imperfect, a good start in reforming the drawing of Assembly and State Senate districts. The current districts, drawn by the lawmakers themselves, solidly favor one party or the other, making it easier for incumbents to get re-elected and harder for moderate candidates to win against party loyalists.

Obama's endorsements

Barack Obama has been racking up an amazing array of endorsements from directions that normally lean conservative; in fact, the Chicago Tribune has never endorsed a Democrat for president in its history. Nationwide, he is leading in newspaper endorsements by 112 to 39 at this writing, probably unprecedented considering the general conservative leaning of the American press (big-city East Coast dailies notwithstanding).

Gay marriage ballot proposition

Some proponents of this divisive measure have placed it in near-apocalyptical terms.

Prop. 2 (animal cruelty)

Proposition 2 on the November ballot mandates that animals being raised commercially for food be kept in humane pens... in many cases currently, livestock and poultry are kept in extremely restrictive cages and pens with very limited ability to move, in the name of efficiency.

Dropping like a rock

The Dow had probably its worst week ever, going into free-fall despite the government's $700 billion bailout plan and the cutting of interest rates worldwide. It started the week around 10,326 and ended around 8,451.
