Appalling

The fires surrounding Oak Park, Agoura & Simi Valley are tragic and terrifying. Oak Park School District has updated their web site with emergency information related to the fires, and school closings.

Las Virgenes the same - Updated with school closings and related information. They also used auto-dialer systems to call all homes.

Simi Valley has two closed schools, and is evacuating Wood Ranch Elementary to Royal High School. You can't find anything related to this on their web site though (But you did approve C4 apparently!). You heard it here first.

Tim,
Simi had a website before C-4 came along, whats your point about the website and C-4? I saw in the paper that the bond oversight committee will be getting their website next month (provided they show up for the meeting this time). Of course to get their website it will mean taking $10,000 out of the general fund, which means fewer classroom supplies for children in Simi.

I was being ironic... Nevermind.

Arleigh - what are your thoughts on SVUSD not having any evacuation info, school closing info or emergency preparedness info on their existing web site?

SVUSD posted their emergency information at 5 pm on Thursday. We also received an automated call from the Superintendent.

What do you think? Was it 24 hours late?

I am a little worried by these comments...

As we have seen with Katrina, the lack of government control, communication, and leadership, led to full scale panic.

In your analysis, what can be improved upon?

Our police, CERT volunteers, and firefighters performed admirably during this recent challenge. I am very proud to live in Simi Valley.

Tim, Scott,
Well if a big quake hits, and we lose power, how are you going to check the website for information? My phone kept working after Northridge, my computer was dead! But I will say I don't think much of SVUSD website and I have told them that, it needs daily updating. But I still don't see the connection with C-4? I did read in the ACORN today the comments of Cohen and Hamilton. I have come to the conclusion that some, not all, members of the Oversight Committee are kind of like the first O.J. Simpson jury. No matter what evidence they receive, they will not believe the truth as they have already formed an alternative truth that fits their agenda.

Again, I was being ironic about C4. I think it was FUNNY and IRONIC that the web site still had the approval information about C4, but nothing about the Fires.

I, for one, am glad they finally got on it and put up the information.

As for the earthquake, it's true that local power would be out. But with the web site updated, people out of town would be able to get information and relay information back into town via cell phone etc... We shouldn't be saying "well, there is nothing we can do" we should be innovating about what can be done.

Where can parents find information related to earthquake response, or emergency preparedness for VC schools? Many are asking in the wake of the Hurricanes & fires.

If anyone knows - please post the link for your district.

I think Mr. Cohen's comments were above board and appropriate. He seems to be keeping it civil, even though he's been called a liar, or worse - a school board candidate.

Arleigh,

You are also right on the C4 Web site. Even though it's a web site required by the education code (so they HAVE to build it, not an option), the $10,000 number is extraordinary, ridiculous and a waste of at least $6000 in tax payer dollars, probably more (I build them for a living, so I know what they cost).

This $10,000 "Mercedes" web site is really just a microcosm of the entire bond project. Way over budget, and never put out to bid.

I wonder what it would have cost to allow students at our technology magnet high school to build and manage the site, either as a club or as a class project, that then gets passed on to the next class. In another part of my blog, I talk about Westlake High School in Austin, Texas that has a video board for football games, and the kids themselves produce the animation and commercials for class and college credit, leading to work experience and jobs after graduation.

A real-world, real-time work experience probably would have been invaluable. But alas, we'll never know.

For "A World of learners" (their slogan) SVUSD will never learn.

A new poll shows 1/3rd of adults don't use the web or almost never use the web.

Posted by: Arleigh Kidd at October 6, 2005 01:57 PM

Which means two-thirds of adults actuallu do use it, or regularly use it, which makes it in 10 years, the fastest growing means of communication in the history of the world.

Embrace it man, it's here to stay.
