Agnostics have morals
Re: Bill O’Reilly’s Aug. 6 commentary, “God save us from secular attacks on religious displays”:
Mr. O’Reilly’s latest commentary is as patronizing and intellectually insulting as ever, not only to agnostic, non-religious Libertarians like myself, but to every single American. Read between the lines, and you’ll be outraged too.
O’Reilly quotes statistics that make it clear that almost half of us choose not to attend religious services, and that a very small majority of Britons would choose to die for their religious beliefs. In his own article, he demonstrates that most of us in the Western world choose to be less religious or more liberal in our beliefs than previous generations. Yet he goes on to tell us that we the majority are succumbing to the attacks of evil, amoral, secular superpowers.
According to Bill O’Reilly, any choice you make regarding your religious faith that may be construed as liberal or secular is not your own; you have been brainwashed by people conspiring to destroy your faith.
Furthermore, if you choose to be non-religious, to practice your faith in a non-organized fashion, to oppose religious displays in government buildings, or if you are not willing to die for your faith, then the terrorists have won.
If you aren’t offended yet, ask yourself if your non-religious or less religious friends and associates lack a moral compass.
It is disgusting to suggest that we who do not share religious faith hold no values or ideals for which we would fight and die.
I can’t speak for O’Reilly, but I do believe that every American has ample intelligence and conscience to make their own decisions regarding their religious beliefs, whatever they may be. I have unmoving faith in the individual human mind, and I know that no one needs Bill O’Reilly “looking out” for them.
