Tactics indefensible

Re: The Star’s Oct. 6 article “Democrats ask Wagner to bow out”:

As a longtime Democratic activist and a candidate myself, for the 24th Congressional District, I feel compelled to respond to this article.

The bullying by a few against one runs against the very core of why I am a Democrat. I would not be able to run in good conscience if I did not stand against such tactics, even if they are against my opponent.

As Democrats, we believe a handful of people do not have the right to choose who will represent them, but that the people hold the sovereign power to make that decision. The grass-roots movement was formed because we did not like the idea of party bosses or would-be kingmakers controlling politics. This runs counter to precisely what we have been working toward all these years.

I am not defending, nor would I ever tolerate any unethical actions, but these accusations seem premature and irresponsible. They are the same ones we have been disgusted by from the Republican Party.

Brett Wagner is not the only one being defamed. His treasurer, Kinde Durkee, is held in the highest regard in the Democratic community. The implication that she has conducted herself in an unethical manner could ruin not just her reputation, but countless other candidates and officials who work with her.

At this time, more than ever, Democrats should be united. A great concern of mine is that these divisions will only weaken the potential we have in our community and lose sight of the real fight against a Republican Party plagued by indictments and scandals.

If there are concerns about a candidate, challenge them on the campaign trail. Place the challenge before the people and let them decide. That is, after all, the democratic way.
