Expansion of Port of Hueneme operations will have a negative impact on the local quality of life.
While an expansion will bring additional unskilled or semi-skilled jobs to the community, the increased traffic from tractor-trailers will add both air pollution and danger on our roads. In addition, the air pollution and water pollution from additional ships entering the harbor will have a detrimental effect on a fragile marine ecosystem. A harbor expansion will presumably bring cheap processed goods manufactured in Asia through our county to consumers in California and the western United States, further enabling our country’s growing trade deficit.
In contrast, the Cabrillo Port liquefied natural gas concept proposes a high-tech, innovative approach to import a clean energy source into the region. The energy will presumably be used by local and regional residences, businesses and manufacturing. The ships will stay well offshore and away from sensitive marine ecosystems. The product, natural gas, will be transported onshore by underground pipeline, invisible to our community. The construction, operations, and maintenance of the Cabrillo Port will bring high-tech, skilled jobs to the area.
Public opinion on these two issues seems backwards. It’s too bad processed goods cannot be imported by pipeline.
