With all the problems associated with the fireworks used illegally in the other cities of Ventura County, and Fillmore's position that the sale of fireworks aids in their community-service fundraising, a new look for a solution is in order.
Perhaps service organizations and churches in the other cities of Ventura County could form a relationship with their counterparts in Fillmore and help each other raise funds so that the sale of fireworks would not be necessary for the Fillmore organizations. This would cut down on the use of fireworks in inappropriate places and fires related to the use of fireworks. Also, the calls to the police and fire departments would be fewer.
My own neighborhood in east Ventura sounded like a war zone from about 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. with sporadic explosions until after midnight. It seems as if the use of fireworks escalates each year in neighborhoods where their use is illegal.
It is time for us to work together to solve this situation and be responsible neighbors.
