Re: Marie Wren’s July 17 letter, “Growth is inevitable:
The city of Fillmore is facing an increase of around 2,000 new dwelling units over the next 14 years. Although this number may sound small to those living in Ventura County’s larger cities, it will increase the population of Fillmore, already the densest city in the county, by about 40 percent. The 700 units approved for north Fillmore that Wren talks about are the latest to be approved. This development’s environmental impact report was released in April of this year, which was the first time the people of Fillmore could learn how it would impact their lives.
At the required Planning Commission and City Council public hearings, we listened to city staff and the developers. We voiced our concerns about traffic congestion, school overcrowding, etc.; all but one of the large number of people who spoke were against the council’s decision.
And when you get right down to it, it’s the people who will have to live with more than twice the number of vehicles going by their homes and who will have to pay, as we always have, for much of the new schools. Opposition to the north Fillmore development is less about “closing the gate and more about stopping the degradation of the quality of life for current and future residents of Fillmore.
