New moral compass

The Republican claim to hold the moral compass for our nation is being called into question. The scandal involving U.S. Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., exposes a cover-up of monumental depth to keep the Bush political status quo at any cost. The Republican House leadership covered up for one of their own instead of watching out for the best interests of the children they are duty-bound to protect. I find it ironic that these same moral leaders try time and again to pass legislation to write discrimination against gay and lesbian citizens into our Constitution, while stating that they did not want to “appear” to be gay bashing by investigating Foley's actions. Actions speak louder than words. We need new moral leadership.

Locally, in Ventura County, we will soon choose a congressional representative for the 24th District. It is time we insist that Elton Gallegly, who marches in step with President Bush and the Republican leadership, face his opponent and address the issue of a national moral compass. Does he still stand with these Republican leaders in Congress? Has he called for the resignation of Speaker Dennis Hastert? The Democratic challenger, Jill Martinez, has asked for debates, but Gallegly remains hidden. What is he hiding in order to protect the status quo?

— Ron Suckle, Ventura
