I was absolutely appalled to hear Supervisor John Flynn explain that we should have accountability in all branches of our county government. Now he proposes an audit of the County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office. Our treasurer has admitted the shortcomings in his office, and he has corrected them with some new electronic means. He has refused to take his automatic raise in salary.
How many taxpayer dollars were wasted when Flynn raised such a furor over the improvements to the Channel Islands Harbor against the majority of the board? As a result, he held up the project. How many other taxpayer dollars has he wasted over the years with his antics and grandstanding? At no time has it ever been reported that he refused his pay raises or suggested that the Board of Supervisors should be paid on the basis of performance.
Our treasurer at least admitted his mistakes and stood up and took the blame. I suggest Mr. Flynn take Treasurer Larry Matheney as his role model, or, better yet, take his pay raises on the basis of performance.

You cite the fact that Matheney "admitted his mistakes and took the blame". It seems to me that his doing so after four years of doing nothing and the Star finding out what was being perpetrated under his "watch" and publishing it make make his actions less than sterling. I myself volunteered in writing to Matheney over a year ago to assist on a volunteer basis in ensuring that everything was on the Up and up in the conservator's office. His response? He sent my offer to the conservator -- the fox in the chicken coop. There's the waste!!
