Re: your Dec. 6 article, “Oxnard to welcome tourists:
This article really struck my funny bone. The thought of an Oxnard Visitor's Center to promote tourism in the Oxnard area is truly hilarious. I am not trying to be cynical, but a tourist is to Oxnard what an agnostic is to the Vatican.
Having resided in Ventura County for almost 50 years, I can recall when Oxnard was a respectable place to live, work and visit. I worked for six years in Oxnard in the late 1950s and early ‘60s. Oxnard was a safe and respectable community back then.
What really amuses me about the article is speculating on what the Oxnard tourism slogan is going to be. Most appropriately, it should be, "Visit the Homicide Capital of California." One of the attractions would be to watch a police shootout or a live gangland killing during your visit.
As someone who knows Oxnard very well, I would just as soon wander through the back alleys of Baghdad as be stranded in certain sections of Oxnard, especially at night.
I think that before local officials start inviting tourists to come into their area, they had better drain the swamps and get rid of the alligators. Check the statistics. Oxnard is a noted hotbed of violence and gang warfare. The city cannot guarantee the safety of its own residents. How are they going to guarantee the safety of their visitors?

Gee Bob, do you like Oxnard or what??
Well I guess If I lived in the town "that never wakes up" I could say mean things to. I mean come on, Camarillo is sooooo boring they turn off HSN tv at 8PM so not to wake the dead.
I'll take old Oxnard over Camarillo anytime. Hey Bob btw, aren't you really saying there are too many "you know whooosss" in Oxnard??
