Re: Noel D’Angelo’s July 16 letter, “Contraception is not pro-woman:

It appears the writer believes sex is something only men want or enjoy, and women who engage in it are generally doing so against their will, solely for the gratification of men. What a warped outlook on humanity and sexuality.

D’Angelo states contraception allows some men to “use women because the natural consequence of sex has been removed. Does D’Angelo really believe not having access to contraception will in any way stop such men from “using women? Men who “use women generally don’t much care about any consequence to the woman, so contraception would certainly be of more value to the victim than the perpetrator.

D’Angelo states that when contraception is used, women are “loved for the pleasure they give, and not for whom they are. What a bizarre statement! Does D’Angelo have insight into the emotional relationships between the millions of men and women who use contraception? Is it not a woman’s right to have sex when she wants and choose whether she wants to get pregnant from it?

The statement that “chastity preserves a woman’s purity, health, self-esteem and respect sounds like something from a Victorian advice column, back in the days when sex was considered shameful for women — but, of course, not for men. In today’s more enlightened society, we recognize that consensual sex can be a healthy expression of love and affection between men and women.

Perhaps he would feel more comfortable in a country in which women must wear a burqa, walk 10 steps behind men and be subject to honor killings for having sex.
We are not in Taliban-era Afghanistan; we are in 21st century America, where, I’m confident, the majority of women would appreciate D’Angelo staying out of their private sex lives.
