Re: Ed Jones’ July 11 commentary, “White House ‘fall guy’ was working with a safety net:
Mr. Jones, a political science professor at Pierce College, is incorrect regarding the background of I. Lewis “Scooter Libby's sentence commutation. Whether he should have been commuted is a subject for another time.
My issues with Mr. Jones are when he states:
— Libby "outed" Valerie Plame, an undercover agent. That’s false. He didn't, as she wasn't undercover. She hadn't been covert for approximately nine years, longer than the five years required by the 1982 Intelligence Identities Protection Act. Richard Armitage "outed" Plame to columnist Bob Woodward — and subsequently Robert Novak — prior to the Libby "outing." Novak also stated that it was well known around Washington that Joseph Wilson's wife, Plame, worked for the CIA.
— Wilson "exploded" the theory that Saddam Hussein was getting his nuclear material from Niger. That’s false. Iraq had "sought," not "bought," yellowcake uranium. Wilson's reply to the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee on July 16, 2004, was, "I never claimed to have debunked the allegation that Iraq was seeking uranium from Africa."
— Patrick Fitzgerald, the federal prosecutor, concluding that Plame was an undercover agent and that it was a crime to reveal her identity, began investigating. It is true that he stated it; however, Fitzgerald knew early on that Armitage had revealed Plame's identity as a CIA agent (not covert) to columnist Novak prior to Libby's alleged "outing." This prompted the shift to "obstruction of justice," since the crime of "outing" a covert agent hadn't occurred.
I hope Mr. Jones is less biased and more accurate when teaching his political science class. I shudder to think how he has presented material in the past.
