Re: Ben Kwasney’s Aug. 19 pro argument to “Will Michael Vick ever play in the NFL again?:
I take exception to Kwasney’s dismissal of Vick critics being nothing more than "dog huggers" causing unreasonable levels of outrage. The idea that Vick would ever be a paid pro athlete again I cannot fathom. Yes, some athletes have been forgiven lapses in judgment. Teams have allowed players a chance at rehab. But Vick's number is and should be up. The mere fact that he was allegedly involved with gambling should settle his prospects of ever playing again. Remember Pete Rose?
The specific mistreatments Vick is accused of inflicting on his dogs went far beyond abuse and mere torture. His alleged acts were unspeakably horrendous. Vick went way beyond a lack of judgment or a glitch in character. He showed himself to be missing that essential intrinsic quality which resides in our soul and gives us humanity.
