Bush no unifying force

Re: Kevin McElroy's Nov. 21 commentary, "Democrats: Negotiate with foreign tyrants, but never Republicans":

One can only wonder what planet McElroy is living on. Not one sane politician on either side of the aisle denies that this country is facing a looming fiscal crisis largely due to several of the most popular and altruistic social programs in the country, Medicare and Social Security. Denial of this fiscal crisis is not what drives Democrats to disagree with President Bush. It is simply that we do not trust him to deal with this problem.

One has only to take into account the widening gap in economic disparity, as well as the state of our government’s budget under Bush's tutelage, to understand this lack of trust. Why would you choose to support a president whose policies have only helped the economic prosperity of those who are least in need of the policies that must be fixed?

Bush has been the most intently divisive president in our lifetime and has flatly refused to work with Congress. That worked well with Republicans running things. However, with a Democratic majority in Congress, he is forced to work with others. As we have been taught since childhood, a good leader is one who can unite people for a common goal. Clearly, Bush is an inept leader and has instead chosen to bring out his veto pen rather than be the uniter he proclaimed himself to be when he entered office.

Come to think of it, he was not a nation-builder either. I guess we’re stuck for another year with a lying, antagonistic president with his endless parade of apologists like McElroy.
