Re: Terry Paulson’s Nov. 26 essay, “Universal healthcare hurts:
Certainly, there’s plenty of room for debate about the pros and cons of universal healthcare. As usual, however, Paulson has no interest in serious debate. Instead, he chooses to simply bash the system he doesn’t like, while exaggerating the merits of the system he prefers.
Nothing could make Paulson’s lack of serious consideration of the healthcare issue more clear than his claim that universal care would chase businesses out of California. Perhaps Paulson is unaware of this, but providing healthcare for employees is a pretty significant expense for many California businesses. Consequently, unless a business owner just likes handing what could otherwise be profits over to health insurance companies — or is as blindly devoted to right-wing politics as Paulson — the last thing he or she would do is leave a state that eliminates a major cost of doing business.
To the contrary, any smart business owner would be happy to be able to focus on his or her business and leave the healthcare to someone else.
