Re: Timm Herdt’s Feb. 27 essay, “The sky is really falling:
Nobody pays attention to what’s happening in Sacramento or Washington, D.C., until it affects him or her personally.
If you don’t have children in school or aren’t a teacher, you don’t pay much attention to education issues. Taxes have been running businesses out of California for the past decade, but, unless you were an employee, it doesn’t matter. About half of the deficit in our state is from people and businesses leaving California for neighboring states with lower business and property taxes, lower or no income or sales taxes, and reasonable fees for things like registration of vehicles.
We are in a war against terror, medicine is in crisis mode, many doctors won’t take our insurance anymore and there’s no money for Social Security or Medicare, yet prescription benefits have been added. We have millions of unknowns living among us because we can’t seem to control our borders, but let’s be sure to take care of legislators and senators and their pet projects.
Let’s be sure to keep the tax-and-spend “progressives in Sacramento so they can continue to do as they please. Get ready for global fees (tax), carbon fees (tax), bad-fat fees (tax) and other fees (taxes) to keep them in the manner in which they’ve become accustomed. Pay no attention to policies and values of the candidates; just make sure they speak a good line, dance a zippy gig and look presentable on TV because they really know that nobody is really listening.
Vote because your candidate is or is not your gender, race or religion. Without an engaged electorate, our officials do as they please. They know you. You’ll notice when it affects you personally; the problem is that it will be too late. But who cares?
