The self-titled debut of Gardens & Villa is on Secretly Canadian, actually located in geographically challenged, Bloomingon, Indiana. Anyway, all the way from Santa Barbara, it's slo-mo, folk rock with just a couple of chords, sort of a freeze-dried early one-note Talking Heads. They give the impression - don't ask me how - that they would be better live as this disc shows promise but on this recording their reach exceeded their grasp. Check 'em out at the delightfully funky Casa De La Raza in S.B. on the 24th of this month.
