Wassup 805? Bill Locey here, neither in Studio 805 nor in Camarillo, but still gainfully employed by the Ventura County Star, at least for the next hour or two, kicking at my house, multi-tasking, writing about rock 'n' roll, watching the new season of "River Monsters" with the sound off and petting my cat, Nope, who is on my lap and as usual, in the way and doing his fair share as part of the worldwide feline anti-literacy campaign.
If I had a faster car, a richer girlfriend or even one with a job, here's where I'll be lurking in the back this week:
All right, no drive to Hell-A on a Friday nite - it's much further but worth it for the greatest rock 'n' roll festival in this here life cycle - it's Coachella down in Indio featuring about 150 bands over three days on two outdoor stages and three stages in tents - all of which should be
packed, especially if it rains on Friday as forecast. The Black Keys, Pulp, Arctic Monkeys, Madness, Mazzy Star, M83, Neon Indian, Dawes - those are just a few of the cool bands on the first day, and since they do it nice, they're doing it twice - Coachella does it all again the following weekend and probably with better bikini weather.
But if you're not there, you could be here - at the infinitely more convenient and affordable affair, an opportunity to go swirling with Jerry's Kids with the soundtrack provided by the Dark Star Orchestra at the cavernous Canyon Club in Agoura. Over those Santa Monica Mountains to the Malibu Inn, you can trip out to the Untouchables - remember them? The band has nothing to do with Eliot Ness and those Patriot Act-loving G-Men or those unfortunate and numerous Indians, while up here in the 805 where we like it, the Legalizers will play some rockin' reggae at the Watermark in Ventura and a few blocks away, it's the Army of Freshmen and Zachary James & the All-Seeing Eyes at the Bombay Bar & Grill. The Emy Reynolds Band will be at Zoey's and the Forty Fours will play some blues at Yolie's.
On Saturday it's that dance chart queen from 20 years ago - Taylor Dayne - she of the 18 Top Ten hits and the serious voice and the perfect hair - she'll be at the big square cement thing by the freeway, the Civic Arts Plaza in T.O., while down in the Ventura Harbor, it's father and son Dodger fans - Fish Fry at Blackbeard's BBQ. The Corsican Brothers will deliver some sadly lacking power pop to the Pacific View Mall in Ventura. The Waddy Wachtel Band will be at the Poinsettia Pavilion - wow, last time I was there, I saw Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Mouse Grey will play some original rock at the Sans Souci and up the coast to S.B. former Conejo Valley local, M. Ward will be at SOhO and finally on a Saturday, Florence & the Machine will be at the Santa Barbara County Bowl - just like Ward, both acts will be at Coachella.
On Monday, it's cool BritPop that's not from Scary Olde England, it's the Manchester Orchestra out of Atlanta - they'll be at the Music Box down on Sunset in Hollyweird. Madness will have those time warp mods skankin' all over phonehead nirvana - that would be Club Nokia in Hell-A. And up here in the 805 where we still like it - Happens Again will happen again every Monday at the Good Bar in Ventura and Delaney Gibson will be at Zoey's.
On Wednesday, it's Colonel Kurtz' favorite band, the Horrors - they'll be at the Music Box in Hollywood, while up here in the 805 where we still love it, especially when we come home from L.A. - it's Radio Threat doing Wednesdays at the Sans Souci in Ventura while a block away, it's Mark Masson and Bruce Kimmel doing guitar stuff at the Good Bar. Fish Fry will entertain all the groovy people at this week's Green Art People get togther on the Ventura Avenue behind the car wash and Neon Indian will be at SOhO in Santa Barbara, also on Wednesday.
Almost done. On Thursday, it's everyone's favorite Belgian of the moment, that would be Gotye - he, too will enthrall the phoneheads at the Nokia Theatre and Sarah Silverman & Friends will do something weird (and maybe even funny) at Largo, while up here where it's closer, social activist Michelle Shocked will be at Zoey's and Jonathan McEuen will be at the Big Buddha Lounge in Oak View. OK, the end - of all that, for now.
