What to know about where to go this week

Wassup 805? Bill Locey here, neither in Studio 805 nor in Camarillo, but still gainfully employed by the Ventura County Star, at least for the next hour or two, kicking it at my house, multi-tasking, writing about rock 'n' roll, watching TCM with the sound off and petting my cat, Nope, who is on my lap and as usual, in the way and doing his fair share as part of the worldwide feline anti-literacy campaign.

If I had a faster car, a richer girlfriend or even one with a job, here's where's I'll be lurking in the back this week:

Citizen Cope

OK, tons of stuff this week, so let's roll: OK, tonight, Friday night, it's Citizen Cope being cool at the Wiltern Theatre in Hell-A and Matt the Electrician will be at McCabe's in Santa Monica and the Gin Blossoms will play some pop rock at the Canyon Club in Agoura. The band happens to be the cool Gin Blossoms - the other ones are red splotches often found on the mugs of experienced drunks due to excessive elbow bending. At the Malibu Inn, the Man in Black lives again in the music of the Mighty Cash Cats while up here in the 805 where we like it, Aaron Orbit will work on his birthday - playing a few tunes at the Bombay Bar & Grill in Ventura. The Corsican Brothers will play some swell pop rock at the El Rey

Aaron Orbit

Cantina in downtown Ventura across from where the Top Hat used to be - while around the corner at Zoey's, Coco Peru will do some drag queen comedy and Wendy DeWitt will play some boogie woogie at Yolie's, also in Ventura. Up Hwy. 33 to Ojai, guitar god Alastair Greene will shred all over the Hub, while up the coast to S.B., Stomprocket is the best of a bunch of bands playing at the Velvet Jones and finally on a Friday, heavenly harmonies will be happening with Crosby, Stills & Nash at the SB County Bowl.

On Saturday, it's Train - great band - they'll be at phonehead nirvana - Nokia Theatre in Hell-A; and it's '80s flashback time with bands such as the Go-Go's and the Psychedelic Furs at the Hollywood Bowl. And up here in the 805 where we like it or until Oxnard paves everything - Teresa Russell will play her guitar, blowing many minds at the Banana Festival in Hueneme. No bananas in Hueneme? Sure there is - tons and tons of them come to us through the port - high in potassium and yummy. Still Saturday: Great name - Steve White & the Barstool Pigeons - they'll play some bluesy rock at Blackbeard's BBQ down in the Ventura Harbor, which, once upon a time, was the city dump. Zachary James & the All-Seeing Eyes along with Char-Man will be at

Go-Go's

Billy O's in Ventura and Rey Fresco and Shaky Feelin' will be at the Bombay. Todd Hannigan and Kyle Hunt & King Gypsy will be at the Tavern in Ventura and Ruby Jane and Nathan McEuen will be next door at Zoey's. Up Hwy. 33 to the Ojai Valley School - it's Dan Grimm, B. Willing James, Shaky Feelin', Britney Christian Band, Matt Zeltzer Band all playing a Rock This County gig in support of the Gary Sinise Foundation - it's a benefit for our veterans, too many of whom are killing themselves. Meanwhile, at our longest war, the Taliban want to return Afghan society to the 7th century - or when the Prophet was actually alive - have a nice trip, dumbasses. We need to steal Pakistan's nukes, kidnap their nuclear scientists and let all those uneducated fools enjoy Moronistan.

Told ya there was lots of stuff - guitar wiz Dave Gleason will be at the Echo in Hell-A on Sunday and Wilco will play some cool Americana stuff at the Hollywood Bowl. And up here in the 805 where we like precisely because it is not Hell-A, all those Shoemaker Brothers will be at the Watermark in Ventura and all those R&B Bombers will be at the Bombay, playing some smooth, bluesy dance music. Frank Barajas will do his one-man pop rock thing at Tutti's, while up the coast to Santa Barbara, Strung Out will play some punk rock at the Velvet Jones and Elvis Costello will some tunes from his vast repertoire at the Granada Theatre on State Street.

Skip one to access the damage until Tuesday when Deerhoof will play some indie rock at the Echoplex in Los Angeles and Shirley Manson will front her band Garbage at the Hollywood Palladium - if they're not cool enough already, they appeared on "Buffy." Same night - the Shins will play a bunch of fabulous art rock tunes at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City and the Lumineers will play some groove rock at the Fonda in Hollyweird while up in Santa Barbara - it's a great one - the Black Keys with Tegan & Sara opening, and Mac's right on the way back on Anacapa.

On Wednesday - he's been around and he used to be in Rockpile - that would be Nick Lowe, who once upon a time, invented Elvis Costello in his spare time - he'll be at the legendary Troubadour in Los Angeles. And why not? It might be fun - noisy for sure - that would be Justin Bieber at Staples Center and finally on a Wednesday up here - it's flower power gal, Camille Bloom - she'll be at the Wine Rack in Ventura - check out my story on her in Time Out - proof positive I'm hardly making any of this up.

OK, almost done - on Thursday, it's propulsive techno rock with My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult at the El Rey in Hell-A and all those Shoemaker Brothers will be at the Pierpont Inn in Ventura. I don't wanna hear anyone whining about how there's never anything to do around here...ya get me?

Rockin' Roll Call
Bill Locey reviews music for the Ventura County Star, when he isn't reenacting the history of this great nation or teaching it to incarcerated youth.
He is the tall guy lurking in the back of all the local rock shows.
