Rock 'n' Roll Call: Fabulous Knickerbockers - Lies

Lies

Got some more vinyl from Sundazed - a flashback compilation album, "Lies" from the Fabulous Knickerbockers, a New Jersey band that started in 1962 or back when AM radio was cool. This one has their knockout hit from 1965 as the title would indicate. Everyone thought then and many probably still do think that "Lies" is a Beatles' song - it sure sounds like the Fab Four, but it's not. Most of the other tunes show their age - competent but not particularly inspired, although "I Can Do Better" and "Just One Girl" are fun pop rock near gems. None of this, however, hints that the band has any such "Lies" in them - as this is a definitive one-hit wonder band. But what a hit - "Lies" could be one of the great Beatles rock songs from their early career; instead, we'll always remember the Knickerbockers along with other cool Jersey acts such as Ben Vaughn, the pre-Kelsey Grammar Boss and the Feelies.
