Knockout by Young Rebel Set, and listening to Girls

The new/old one by the Young Rebel Set is from 2011 in Scary Olde England but just out here - the album is "Curse Our Love" on Big Flame/Ignition Records. I don't even know who sent this to me - but thanks - these guys rock and are my new favorite band, adding a bit of the Clash, the Bobby Fuller Four, Bruce Springsteen and Del Amitri - it's smart guy BritFolk with an edge.

I don't even know what year to list this one but these guys deliver a knockout - one of the best albums of whatever year - you'll be inventing new adjectives to describe this and also buying a crowbar to extract this one out of your CD player. "Lion's Mouth" is sort of a rockabilly song and "If I Was" and "Measure of a Man" have so many hooks that they'll live in your head for daze. This is why I do this - to find bands like this.

I don't love anyone, by Belle & Sebastian
One of my favorite TV shows, the ever twisted, award-winning "Girls" on HBO now has a soundtrack, just out on Fueled By Ramen, one of mighty, mighty Atlantic's many aliases. This is like an abbreviated hour spent on Sirius FM or listening to a bunch of the bands you've read about on the indie/college charts. It starts off with the sad girl, poor me "Dancing On My Own" by Robyn and doesn't miss a beat with great songs by Fun, Grouplove, Fleet Foxes and my heroes, the Vaccines and plenty more. Belle & Sebastian's tune, "I Don't Love Anyone" is probably the unofficial theme song for the show and "I Love It" by Icona Pop makes them another of my new favorite bands for this week.

"Girls," the brain child of pudgy and pouty Lena Dunham is hilarious and Season 2 just started - it's on Sunday nights at 6 and a million more times the rest of the week. My favorite episode is when uptight Shoshanna (played by Zosia Mamet who should've won an Emmy) accidently smoked crack at a rave. With that said, "Hey HBO - so evidently my 112 George Washingtons are not enough for you to carry the Pac-12 Network? Wassup with that? I have to drive 25 miles to a bar to watch my old school, UCLA, play basketball? I've missed more Bruin games this year than I have in the last 30 years."
