Diesel's New Day

For those that read my blog often, you know how much of a diesel advocate I am. Last year I predicted a 10-15% growth in U.S. diesel sales and that now looks to be true. Bosch, a major supplier of diesel motor parts recently announced an estimated 15% increase in diesel sales in the states over the next 7 years.

My friends are always amazed when I share the fact that over 50% of the vehicles sold in Europe are diesel. It shouldn't be a surprise as diesels are far more advanced today than ever. Gale Banks CEO of Gale Banks Engineering stated "With clean diesel power, drivers can have approximately 30% better fuel economy and 50% more torque, as well as reduce emissions by up to 25%, when compared to gasoline-powered passenger car engines," Banks explained. "With clean diesel, no longer are fuel economy and performance mutually exclusive."

Unfortunately there are a handful of diesel owner's that keep the fear of diesel strong. They attempt to gain torque and horsepower without properly tuning the engine. The end result of this action is the familiar cloud of smoke when you see them "get on it" as we say. I promise that thanks to such programs as Bluetec, many of today's diesels are cleaner than gasoline powered engines. Keep an eye on VW for the TDI which boasts anywhere from 47-52mpg on average.

Food for thought,

Weekend Warriors

Lately it seems small-car purchases are the trend, no surprise with gas prices at $4+. What about those of us that need extra space for our off-work activities? From hiking to diving and surfing, it takes more than a Civic to "get 'er done".

A 2007 Automotive Lifestyles Survey conducted by SEMA showed that about a third of automotive enthusiasts enjoy running, jogging, walking, bicycling, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, shooting, camping and/or hiking in the last year.

Believe it or not, a quarter of surveyed enthusiasts said they have worked out in a gym, boated or sailed in the last year. For this large group of the populist a small, limited-space car may not suffice. Therefore, there is a large active population that is looking for fuel efficiency and cargo room.

In years past it was found that this group purchased both pickup trucks and SUV's respectively. The survey by SEMA went a step further and found what this group considered the best for their needs. So, if you have an "outdoor" lifestyle and are considering a new ride to tote you and your gear to your destination, look no further!

Here are 6 of the top 10 considered:

• Ford F-Series
• Dodge Ram
• Chevrolet Silverado
• Chevrolet C/K Pickup
• Jeep Wrangler
• Chevrolet S-10

After looking at the list, you see that this was a national survey. I know for a fact that Toyota pick-ups are a truck of choice for everyone from pool boys to moto crossers in Cali. I'm sure a "California only" survey would turn this list on it's ear.

A good truck of choice might be one with a bow tie on it's grill. The Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid was named the most accessory-friendly vehicle at the 2007 SEMA Show. It was named the green vehicle of the year at the 2007 LA Auto Show as well. It's no wonder what with boasting a fuel economy that matches the Camry.

Do I feel 21mpg is great in the year 2008? Yes and no; for a 5300 pound truck yes, for a 3200 pound car no. I welcome the CAFE law of required 35mpg from all car manufacturers by 2020. I feel the law should come into fruition sooner, in my opinion.

If you are a weekend warrior looking for a vehicle with space and good mileage, your options are bound to expand. Just because the cost of fuel rises, our change in recreational activities should not. I see the future holding excellent high mileage large-capacity vehicles. These vehicles may utilize smaller fuel-friendly engines or even alternate fuels. Either way, this is a huge niche that needs to be considered.

Now get out and play!

Getting Tired

On more than one occasion I have stressed the importance of having good tread on your sled. Why? Well, remember your tires are the only thing keeping you connected to the road. Often times we ignore our tires until we have a problem and that is not the way it should be.

On average a tire loses 1-2 pounds of pressure per month. Tires with lower air pressure run a higher risk of failure. Lower pressure also delivers lower gas mileage and that should be top of mind right now. Another interesting fact; 90% of tire damage occurs when there is 10% or less of tread remaining. Why? more surface area for road hazrds to come in contact with.

Check your tires today, or take them to your local tire dealer and they will check them for you. Big Brand, America's Tire, Sears and Tire Pro's all do free inspections. They not only check air pressure, they also check tread wear and remaining life as well.

When purchasing new tires always shop around. Shop based on out-the-door pricing, not just tire cost alone. Other added values many offer are; free tire rotation, free re-balancing and even free flat repair.

What about Road Hazard? Road hazard is okay, especially if you do a lot of off-roading or construction. For the average Joe, I say pass on the road hazard. The thing I ask friends is "how many flats have you had in your life". If the answer is less than a few times then I say save your money. The average cost for a set comes out to the cost of a new tire anyway!?

Be sure to rotate your tires every time you change your oil (every 5-k miles). The can give you up to 30% more life out of your set. Do you need to buy tires in a set? No. It is easier but if needed, you can buy in pairs as well. Why directional? Typically we found that directional tires do better in wet weather but in Souther California that isn't a high concern.

Feel free to contact me with questions on tires, or any aspect of your car for that matter.

Happy Motoring,

Lance
