Lately it seems small-car purchases are the trend, no surprise with gas prices at $4+. What about those of us that need extra space for our off-work activities? From hiking to diving and surfing, it takes more than a Civic to "get 'er done".
A 2007 Automotive Lifestyles Survey conducted by SEMA showed that about a third of automotive enthusiasts enjoy running, jogging, walking, bicycling, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, shooting, camping and/or hiking in the last year.
Believe it or not, a quarter of surveyed enthusiasts said they have worked out in a gym, boated or sailed in the last year. For this large group of the populist a small, limited-space car may not suffice. Therefore, there is a large active population that is looking for fuel efficiency and cargo room.
In years past it was found that this group purchased both pickup trucks and SUV's respectively. The survey by SEMA went a step further and found what this group considered the best for their needs. So, if you have an "outdoor" lifestyle and are considering a new ride to tote you and your gear to your destination, look no further!
Here are 6 of the top 10 considered:
• Ford F-Series
• Dodge Ram
• Chevrolet Silverado
• Chevrolet C/K Pickup
• Jeep Wrangler
• Chevrolet S-10
After looking at the list, you see that this was a national survey. I know for a fact that Toyota pick-ups are a truck of choice for everyone from pool boys to moto crossers in Cali. I'm sure a "California only" survey would turn this list on it's ear.
A good truck of choice might be one with a bow tie on it's grill. The Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid was named the most accessory-friendly vehicle at the 2007 SEMA Show. It was named the green vehicle of the year at the 2007 LA Auto Show as well. It's no wonder what with boasting a fuel economy that matches the Camry.
Do I feel 21mpg is great in the year 2008? Yes and no; for a 5300 pound truck yes, for a 3200 pound car no. I welcome the CAFE law of required 35mpg from all car manufacturers by 2020. I feel the law should come into fruition sooner, in my opinion.
If you are a weekend warrior looking for a vehicle with space and good mileage, your options are bound to expand. Just because the cost of fuel rises, our change in recreational activities should not. I see the future holding excellent high mileage large-capacity vehicles. These vehicles may utilize smaller fuel-friendly engines or even alternate fuels. Either way, this is a huge niche that needs to be considered.
Now get out and play!

True - also if you're a homeowner a truck is nice to have. Hauling lumber or plants in my sporty car doesn't work for me. Although if your friends know you have a truck - you're the first they call when it time to move.
