Westlake High football coach Jim Benkert is one win away from tying former St. Bonaventure coach Jon Mack for the Ventura County record for career football victories.
With Westlake's 50-21 win Friday night against Royal, the Warriors improved to 5-2 for the season and are tied for second in the Marmonte League with a 3-1 record.
In his 20th season, Benkert's teams have a 162-69-5 record. Mack compiled a 163-47-1 record in 17 years at St. Bonaventure before becoming the head coach at Ventura College.
Benkert was inducted into the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame last year.
