And Saugus just had a 35-yard kickoff return called back for an illegal block.

SANTA CLARITA -- Lister bowls over three defenders off left tackle for a 32-yard romp to set Thousand Oaks up at the Saugus 24 with just under two minutes to play in the first half at Cougar Stadium.

On the play action, Thousand Oaks quarterback Ian Shultis immediately finds receiver Robert Mullaney alone down the middle of the field for a 24-yard scoring strike with 1:41 left in the half.

That's the way the first half ends. The Lancers will receive the second half kickoff.

Lister has 157 yards on 14 carries.

He races upfield, gaining 22 and 21 yards, to covert a second-and-25 predicament. He doubles back in the backfield and unleashes downfield to draw a pass interference penalty.

Then he finishes the drive off himself with a 7-yard keeper to give Saugus a 14-7 lead with 3:04 left in the half.

Leiben wary of "dynamic" Saugus duo

SANTA CLARITA -- Thousand Oaks High football coach Mike Leiben reports no issues to report ahead of the Lancers' CIF-SS Northern Division quarterfinal Friday night at Cougar Stadium.

Other than having to defend Saugus duo Desi Rodriguez and Ryan Zirbel.

"Those two in the backfield is a pretty dynamic combination," said Leiben during pregame.

Rodriguez, the quarterback, has thrown for 1,446 yards, 14 touchdowns and four interceptions, while running for 1,467 yards and 17 touchdowns. Zirbel, the tailback, has rushed for 1,591 yards and 21 touchdowns on 186 carries.

Leiben also singled out slot back Kollin Depew, who has run and received for nearly 700 yards and 7 TDs.

"He's a pretty effective player," said Leiben. "It's a nasty combination."

La Reina won its first section title, capturing the Division IV girls' championship.

Melissa Skiba became the first Oak Park girls' runner to win an individual section title, capturing the Division III championship.

In all, nine area teams and seven individuals qualified for the state championships on Nov. 29 in Fresno.

Seraphs move on

Logan Meyer threw for 216 yards and three touchdowns, Patrick Hall ran for 104 yards and a touchdown and the defense and special teams made big contributions as the top-seeded Seraphs defeated visiting Newbury Park, 38-14, in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division playoffs.

"We're getting back in that playoff mode," said linebacker Dylan Davis.

Running back Cameron Roberson ran for 105 yards and a score on 17 carries for Newbury Park (7-4) before leaving the game in the third quarter with a knee injury.

Having cleared the 6-foot, 205-pound obstacle that was Cameron Roberson and a surprise cameo at wide receiver for Newbury Park senior Chris Brown, St. Bonaventure (10-1) will have a new hurdle in next week's quarterfinals -- the nearly 150-mile trek north to Paso Robles.

The Seraphs have already accomplished a similar feat, having won 35-14 at Atascadero on Sept. 12.

Newbury Park quarterback Jake Geringer throws incomplete on fourth and three from the St. Bonaventure 33 and, for the second straight possession, the St. Bonaventure defense holds firm on fourth down in their own territory to thwart potential Newbury Park scoring drives.

The last three Newbury Park drives have been stopped on the Seraphs' 33-, 37- and 18-yard line.

Needing something to stay in the game, Newbury Park gets it from junior running back Cameron Roberson.

As they go through warm ups before their CIF-SS playoff game with Valencia, the Ventura Cougars act like a confident team. Head coach Brad Steward said his team will have to play really well to upset the Vikings, but he believes his team is ready to play.
"The team is loose as a goose," Steward said about 50 minutes before kickoff. "So we will either play really well or get our butts kicked."
A lot of what happens tonight will rest on the right arm of sophomore quarterback Keihan Gibbs. Gibbs has played well beyond his experience all season, but he will need to be at his best for his team to have a chance.
"He's matured a lot as a quarterback," Steward said. "And he's a natural born leader."
As for Gibbs feeling extra pressure in his first playoff start, Steward said, "He doesn't care, he just wants to play football."

Cole Seeger, the third member of the group, has signed to play the University of California, Davis.

All three players return for Westlake High in the spring, making the Warriors a favorite to win the Marmonte League crown again.

Fourth-down facts

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

It was unusual enough that Nordhoff High tried to convert on fourth down on every one of its possessions in Friday's 62-8 loss to Oaks Christian.
But it was even more unusual because of where those fourth-down attempts were coming -- usually deep in Ranger territory.
Here's a list of the fourth-down plays (correcting my story, Nordhoff was 3 of 11, not 3 of 12):
First quarter
4th and 2, Nordhoff 33: Parker Johnsen run for 1 yard. (Oaks scored in five plays)
4th and 18, Nordhoff 12: Drew Rodriguez pass intercepted by Brian Owusu, returned for touchdown.
4th and 13, Nordhoff 43: Incomplete pass. (Oaks did not score on ensuing possession.)
4th and 11, Nordhoff 28: First down on pass interference penalty.
Second quarter
4th and 18, Nordhoff 40: Incomplete pass. (Oaks did not score on ensuing possession.)
4th and 10, Nordhoff 23: Incomplete pass. (Oaks scored in three plays).
4th and 6, Nordhoff 24: First down on pass interference penalty.
Third quarter
4th and 7, Nordhoff 23: Incomplete pass. (Oaks scored in four plays.)
Fourth quarter
4th and 11, Nordhoff 18: Incomplete pass (Oaks scored in four plays.)
4th and 5, Oaks 43: First down on Rodriguez pass to Justin Burgess.
4th and 7, Oaks 16: Rodriguez sacked for 10-yard loss. (Oaks runs out clock and game)
A couple of other elements which contributed to the bizarre nature of the game: After Nordhoff scored its touchdown on a Johnsen run late in the fourth quarter, the entire team came off the bench to congratulate him. And trailing 62-8 with less than five minutes remaining, Nordhoff executed a successful onside kick, which led to the last of those fourth-down attempts.

Santa Paula pride

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

An hour before Santa Paula's game with Grace Brethren, Cardinal fans had already packed the stands in anticipation of Friday night's game. It's been a few years since Santa Paula has had a chance to win an outright league title and it's evident by the buzz in the stands that fans and students are eager to see if their team can accomplish that goal. Regardless of what happens tonight, fans are excited about seeing their team compete in this year's CIF-SS playoffs.

Channel League granted exemption

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Because CIF rules require all games that have playoff implications to be completed by Nov. 14, the Channel League had to make a special request from the section office to move the Ventura-Santa Barbara football game from Friday to Saturday at 4 p.m. at Larrabee Stadium.

Ventura and Santa Barbara are tied for second in the Channel League. The winner will be the league runner-up, while the loser will place third and likely pitted against a league champion in the first round of the Northern Division playoffs.

Playoff seedings and brackets for 13 divisions will be determined by a section committee on Saturday and released to the public on Sunday.

"The Channel League was given special dispensation," said CIF Director of Communications Thomm Simmons

The Ventura-Santa Barbara game has been moved to Saturday at 4 p.m. at Ventura High's Larrabee Stadium. It will be played before the Citrus Cup game between Ventura College and Moorpark College. Ventura High athletic director Dave Hess said Santa Barbara called and requested the game be moved because Santa Barbara's students were scattered because of the fire.

The St. Bonaventure game against San Marcos remains scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Larrabee Stadium.

Injuries, Academics Could Sideline Star Players

Share: Share on Facebook submit to reddit StumbleUpon Toolbar

Several of the county's star football players will be spending tomorrow night's regular-season finale on the sidelines in street clothes.

Santa Clara's Cierre Wood and Oaks Christian's Malcolm Jones will miss their games with injuries while St. Bonaventure's Patrick Hall could be held out for academic reasons.

Wood's injury could be season-ending, according to Santa Clara head coach Fran Fredette. Wood badly sprained his ankle near the end of Santa Clara's loss to Oaks Christian last Friday.

The Notre Dame-bound senior is limping badly and hasn't practiced all week in preparation for Carpinteria.

"It might keep him out the rest of the year," Fredette said. "He's always been a kid I though had remarkable recuperative power and would be healed up in a day or two. I have never seen him like this."

Jones suffered a slight shoulder separation in the third quarter of the same game. The junior is out for tonight's game against Nordhoff and doubtful for next week's playoff opener.

"Hopefully we can get him back for the quarterfinals," Oaks Christian head coach Bill Redell said. "We are going to need him. He's a pretty significant player."

Hall's parents requested to have him sit out last week's victory over Santa Barbara to attend to academic obligations.

The USC-bound senior has a heavy course load this season - seven regular classes plus two additional night classes - according to St. Bonaventure head coach Todd Therrien.

"It is kind of overwhelming for him," Therrien said. "We don't know yet if he will play this week."

Santa Clara's 49-6 loss to Oaks Christian - which snapped an 18-game winning streak - apparently took a mental toll as well as physical.

"It devastated the team. I've had only 50 percent attendance this week in practice," Fredette said.

Rio Mesa, Royal draw water polo seeds

For the first time in Pacific View League history, one of its schools is a No. 1 playoff seed in boys' water polo

League champion Rio Mesa was seeded No. 1 in Division VI for the postseason. The Spartans received a first-round bye and will be at home for a second-round game on Thursday.

A strong finish to the season earned Marmonte League champion Royal the No. 2 seeding in Division IV. The last CIF Division IV polls had listed Royal as tied for fifth. The Highlanders will face Carpinteria at home in a first-round game on Thursday.

Ventura, the third place team out of the Channel League, will be on the road Wednesday against Loyola. An at-large selection, Buena drew No. 3 seed Los Alamitos on the road on Wednesday.

In the only first-round game matching area opponents, Agoura will host Oaks Christian on Thursday.

All games are scheduled to start at 3:15 p.m.

Ventura is 5-0-1 against  Santa Barbara over the last six seasons.

Ventura has three runner-up finishes in the last four years.

Santa Paula clinches share of title

For only the third time in 36 years, Santa Paula has won a league football title.

With its 26-7 victory over Malibu on Friday night, Santa Paula clinched no worse than a tie for the Frontier League championship with its rival Fillmore (8-2, 3-1), which finished its regular season with a win over Grace Brethren.

Since winning back-to-back league championships in 1971 and 1972, Santa Paula's other titles came in 1990 and 2001. Santa Paula closes out its regular season at home on Friday against Grace Brethren.

With seven wins already in the books, the 7-2 Santa Paula Cardinals have produced the third-highest victory total in the program in 18 years.

Jim Benkert of Westlake and Cliff Farrar of Buena moved up one spot on the Ventura County all-time wins list for coaches.

With Westlake's victory over Simi Valley on Thursday, Benkert improved his career record to 163-67-5, tying him with former St. Bonaventure coach Jon Mack for first place. Mack's career record is 163-47-1.

In his first season at Buena after a long career at Nordhoff, Farrar tied retired Rio Mesa coach John Reardon for third place on the wins list. Farrar's career record is 154-101-2. Reardon was 154-119-4. Farrar has led Buena to a 4-3 record this season, including a 35-10 victory over San Marcos last Friday.

Don't count out Fillmore

With one game left on its regular-season schedule, the Fillmore High football program still has an outside shot of claiming a share of the Frontier League title.

Fillmore, 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the Frontier League, dropped a 34-14 decision to Santa Paula (6-2, 2-0 Frontier) last Friday night in the 98th meeting between the two schools.

Fillmore closes its regular season with a home game against Grace Brethren (3-5, 1-1) on Friday. A victory ensures Fillmore of a spot in the East-Valley Division playoffs. Fillmore could tie for the league title if Santa Paula loses to either Malibu or Grace Brethren in its final two games.

There is an outside chance for a three-way tie for second, should Fillmore lose to Grace Brethren

Scott Arellano caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Tony Macarena in the fourth quarter of Oaks Christian's 54-0 win over rival Oak Park Friday at Agoura High.

But Arellano, the Lions' punter, accomplished something else strange for a punter Friday night. He blocked a punt.
