Because of air quality conditions in East Ventura County, high school coaches in the Simi Valley school district were advised to be careful with student-athletes with breathing problems. Practices have not been canceled.

Royal High will be "scaling back" on its workouts Monday, said athletic director Jim Wilber

Six area football players have made the MaxPreps 2009 Preseason All-State team.

Oaks Christian landed five players on the team: Quarterback Nick Montana, offensive lineman Erik Kohler, defensive lineman Cassius Marsh, linebacker Zac Stout and all-purpose player Malcolm Jones.

Giovanni DiPoalo of St. Bonaventure was also selected as an offensive lineman

Ranking recruits

As the football season gets under way on Friday with week zero games, here is a look at some of the area players on the national radar. Many of the names are very familiar. First we will look at who Rivals ranks as among the top 250 prospects in the nation:

- No. 70 - Malcolm Jones, Oaks Christian, ATH, 6-1, 210. College: Undecided (finalists are Stanford and UCLA)

What they said: "Scouting Report: He could project as a big back or speedy outside 'backer at the next level. He is not afraid to lower the boom as a ballcarrier or a defender. Jones, like Lattimore, can really wear out a defense in the second half, leaving many hands on hips. Look for him to lead his school to a state championship in the fall."

- No. 192, Giovanni Di Poalo, St. Bonaventure, OL, 6-4, 260. College: USC

What they said: "Has help lead team to back-to-back CIF state titles."

- No. 193, Erik Kohler, Oaks Christian, OL, 6-4, 264. College: Washington

What they said: "Kohler played baseball before making football his primary sport."

Honoring Laut

Having a memorial for 1984 Olympic men's shot put bronze medalist and Hueneme High athletic director Dave Laut, killed by an intruder in his Oxnard back yard last Thursday, might not be the only thing that his former UCLA teammates are planning.

The word is out that a scholarship fund could be established for Laut's 10-year-old son Michael by members of UCLA track and field teams from 1977-79.

Unconnected to that proposed fund is a Dave Laut Memorial Fund established by Home Field Sports.com in conjunction with the County Schools Federal Credit Union.

Spacious home

Grace Brethren may not look like it draws very well for home football games in Moorpark College's spacious stadium.

Crowds average between 500 to 1,500, said Grace Brethren football coach Terry Gourley.

Compared to the school's enrollment, the number is significant.

"We can average five times more than the number of students on campus," said Gourley. Grace  Brethren's student body is around 220, he said.

Through ticket and snack bar sales, Grace Brethren is able to cover its costs for staging a game at Moorpark College. At times, the school makes a profit.

"It has become a perfect venue for us," said Gourley.

Kohler commits to Washington

Oaks Christian School offensive tackle Erik Kohler has made a verbal commitment to the University of Washington, Oaks Christian coach Bill Redell said.

Kohler, a 6-foot-5, 290-pound lineman, will be starting for his third season with Oaks Christian.
"He's very  strong and has great leadership abilities," said Redell.

Kohler might be used on the defensive line more than he has in the past, said Redell.

He is the fourth Oaks Christian player to commit to a major college prior to the 2009 season.

Running back Malcolm Jones and lineman Cassius Marsh are considering scholarship offers, said Redell. Jones has narrowed his choices between UCLA and Stanford
